Basement & Foundation reviews in Nicholasville

It went really well from the start, I had a deadline that I thought was pretty tough, but J & R Construction wasn't phased by it at all. Jimmy and Josh both came out to discuss the details with me at the property and advised me on what they recommended I do and how the options would go. Then they went back to the office and estimated the project and got me an official written estimate. The job did not exceed that estimate and they met the deadline. There were multiple elements involved, electrical, ceiling fan, removal of a garage door, drywall, flooring, vinyl siding, a window, air-conditioning unit, etc. I'm very happy with the results and I highly recommend them to my friends and family for any of their remodeling projects so I also recommend them here on Angie's List.

We were very impressed with Highlands. They came out within a week of us calling to do the estimate. Their estimate came in at nearly half the cost of the other 2 companies (very well known ones in this field), plus the reviews indicated they were likely to do a better job. With the reviews and price on their side, plus this being a family owned company we decided to go with Highlands. They were a pleasure to work with. They showed up right on time the first day and took a few minutes to look over the basement and answer any questions before getting started. Then they carefully laid down drop cloths from the front door to the basement steps before doing anything else. The gentlemen were very respectful of our house and were happy to answer any questions we had. It is a loud process to have the basement floor jack hammered up, and dig a new sump pit, but the workers were careful to keep the basement door closed to help with the dust and noise. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up each day, and when they picked up the drop cloths they would wipe up any dust/dirt that was left behind. The actual work they did was very well done. The trench was carefully dug out for the drain pipe, and angled downward to the sump pump. They were careful to cover any areas of the wall that had had previous leaks with special boards in case the leaks came back. All of those leaks have been repaired, but it's an extra measure of protection to guide any water into the drainage system. They took all of the cement and rock they dug out away and brought fresh rock to cover the drainage system. The cement they put back down was smooth and blends nicely to the rest of the floor. We would definitely work with this company again, and recommend them to others.

Job went very well. We had to wait nearly four weeks for our appointment, but when the day came, two young men showed up on time. They hung plastic sheeting on the doors and over the furniture to control the dust which necessarily was generated. They both worked extremely hard for a day and a half and finished the job. Afterward they cleaned up, picked up and hauled off the scrap materials. They drilled and dug a trench in the concrete basement floor and a three foot deep sump. Placed drainage pipes in the trench, covered with gravel and re-concreted the floor. All exactly as they had described in the job estimate that we had been given. We were very pleased with their workmanship. Now we are waiting for a heavy and extended period of rain to see how well the waterproofing performs. I am very confident it will work well, and they did give us a certificate that is a lifetime transferrable warranty on the work they did.

He did not complete the job, and we already paid him. We cannot reach him at all. We feel that he is out trying to take advantage of the elderly and handicapped such as ourselves. The trench was supposed to be 30 inches deep- he barely dug 15 inches. It is also nowhere near where we needed it. Please stay away!

Jimmy had several crews who did most of this project. If Jimmy supervised it, then it was more likely to be done well. However, many of these projects were completed by his subcontractors. He did not do a good job of supervising them. Specifically, we have paid $1000 to hire another contractor to repair the siding which was not installed correctly. Jimmy did send the siding contractor out to repair the defective work initially but even that repair was not done correctly.  The concrete drive was not installed correctly and we have had a few problems with the concrete reinforcement migrating above the concrete surface which was a problem for tires and bare feet.  The plumbing contractor installed the pex plumbing with automotive clamps instead of the required plumbing clamps.
My daughter and son-in-law hired him to repair their leaky basement.  The basement still leaks.
Personally, Jimmy is a great guy.  I think if he actually did all the work, then good outcomes could be expected.  But his crews are very poor representatives of his business.  Unfortunately the project suffers because of these sub contractors.

I got a quote from them in late August to fix and install several things on a rental property. John showed up promptly to assess the work and gave me a very reasonable quote the next day. I called in late September to set up the appointment to do the job. John told me that they were busy that week and he would call me back the following Monday. That Monday came and went with no returned call. On the following Friday, I called back to ask about setting up the job, and was told that John would call me back. The next week went by with no return call from John, so I called them again and was told that John would call me back, which he did not. This scenario repeated for the next several weeks with me calling and John not calling me back, so I finally gave up and went with another plumber. I can only guess that they did not want to do the work that they had quoted, but did not want call me back to tell me this. It seems that they wanted me to give up and go away, which is what I finally did.

Installers arrived right on schedule, put booties on before entering our home, and went right to work. Evaluated the best method for running the piping, drilled a few test holes to assure good air draw throughout the basement sub floor rock base, and completed the entire job in 5.5 hours. Clean up was well done, and system and follow up testing was explained. Our system may have cost a bit more than average, due to higher capacity fan unit to draw from 3000 sq. ft. of flooring.

Mr. Shipley explained all the problems he could observe.  He explained them in detail in an easy to understand manner.  He advised me that the problems may or may not worsen, but he described what I should look for in the future.  He listened to my concerns and fears and put them to rest for the time being.  He advised that in his opinion nothing he saw warranted any action on his part at this time and he told me he did not feel anything he saw was important enough to need an action currently.  He did advise me what may or may not happen and when to contact him in the future if certain things did occur.  He was prompt, professional, friendly, helpful, and appeared very knowledgable.  I will definitely contact him in the future if my home needs any concrete leveling or foundation repair.

I called for an estimate and Mr. Woods responded quickly. He spent time so that he had a thorough understanding of our needs. He formulated an estimate quickly which I received by e-mail. Once we had agreed on a price then the work proceeded quickly. There were a couple of delays due to weather and then arranging concrete delivery, but these were short and would be expected given the outside work requested.
Once the work was done the concrete forms were removed in a timely fashion, the work area was cleaned and left in good repair

Robert, the owner, is great. We can't say enough good things about him. He's done what few subs have done in our house building project: do what you say, when you say, and how it should be done. Robert could practically read my mind on what I wanted done and how I wanted it done because he knows the right way to do things. His guys were great and hard workers. Robert is very friendly, and a heck of a work horse. I would highly recommend him to anyone. I actually recommended him to my parents for some light grading and seeding in their yard. They were thrilled with the job done and he did it for half the cost of the other quote they had. And he was in and out very quick.
