    A1 Hoosier Painting and More
Very badly. Agreed to complete work in 5 days. By end of day 2, both Paul Wells & Shawna Wells (owners) had spent only 3.5 hours in our home. Brought paint they had used in a previous painting job in Bloomington IN. It was not the paint agreed to in our contract. Had not even started to prepare deck for staining. Interior walls preparation was sloppy, smearing caulking on part of wall that did not need repaired. They were fired at end of day 2. I agreed to pay for 2 days of the agreed 5 days work. Paul & Shawna refused to return balance of down payment. They do not follow their own contract! Very poor business practice. So off to small claims court we go! Morgan County/Martinsville IN. FYI-I am the second person in Morgan County this year (2018) taking them to small claims court. Claims to be Christian, a military veteran & law enforcement officer. I recommend checking with Morgantown IN officials to see how the law enforcement career went....certainly not acting very Christian. Paul always had an excuse when questioned...Mr & Mrs Wells are well known in the Martinsville area and not necessary in a good way. I took a chance with this company/people even though I just had a bad feeling. Should have paid attention to my bad feeling. I would be happy to provide any additional information is contacted...

    Smither Enterprises
Did a nice job on most projects, especially master bath floor, door lock, crown molding, sliding doors, etc. We did clean-up after. Was timely in working us into schedule and did extra by moving furniture. Had difficulty and re-worked staining of wood floors.

    Hoosier Carpenter
On Sept. 30 I purchased a handyman special offering three hours of service for $95.00. Nearly two weeks passed until I heard from Richard at Hoosier Carpenter via email on Oct. 11 to schedule service. The email stated he was making a second attempt to contact me (no record of previous contact on my end; this was the first attempt I received). We talked live the next day (Oct. 12) and due to his schedule and my family vacation the following week agreed to talk the week of Oct. 24 to schedule a date for the ceiling fan installation. At the close of this conversation he assured me there would be no problem scheduling and no reason for me to schedule time before we ended our call. Long story short, beginning on Monday, Oct. 24, I called his cell phone and left vm two times, called his office one time (got disconnected), and, last, sent a follow-up email requesting the service on Friday, Oct. 28. Today is Nov. 1 and I have yet to hear from Richard to schedule the service I paid for or see him or any other rep from his company at my house to fulfill their end of the contract. Way too much work on my end to schedule this work. Now I need to figure out how to get my money back.

    Miss Fix-It
Came to look at project, said they believe they could help. They said they needed to do some research and would give me a call back. First of all, I have been recently widowed and needed the project done so I could sell my home. They never, ever, contacted me again. If you want them to do anything I guess you need a much bigger project than mine. Thanks Miss Fix it in Indiana for no help.

    Home Experts
They are very busy and it did take a bit of time to get a hold of them. Once we had an appointment scheduled, they were punctual. They were quick, clean, and efficient. They completed the entire job in one full day. They did quality work and were very cost effective. I would highly recommend them.

    Handyman Connection of Carmel
Charles from Handyman Connection did the installation.  He arrived right on time and had all the necessary tools to complete the job.  He had the new attic door installed in less than two hours.  While he was installing the door he noticed that electric wiring that crossed the attic had been closed before in the attic door so the insulation was worn.  He used electrical tape to make sure it didn't fray and then moved the wires so that would not continue to happen.  I appreciated this extra attention.

    Apex Design Build

I initially purchased and Angie's list Big deal for 2 hours of electrical labor for $99.  The ad stated it was for labor only but I bought it anyway knowing that I would have the cost of materials to add to the deal.

I was contacted by Apex's owner David Wilson and he informed me that this Big Deal was labor only and that he would need to have someone come out and do an estimate for a bid contract which would include materials.  He said he would apply what I had already paid toward the work.  What he didn't say was that he would apply it at the regular labor rate so that I would only get 1 hour's worth of labor when I expected 2 for that credit, but more to follow on that point. I accepted his bid estimate for installing the generator connection to the house electric panel based on his technician's (Jason) estimate that it would probably take 4 hours to complete the job due to having to drill through masonry and cut some drywall.  The bid estimate was $442 for material and labor.

Unfortunately the bad weather in the Indianapolis area created difficulties for the Apex team getting to the house due to too much snow and ice.  After a second power outage my wife and I decided to invest in a whole house generator instead so I emailed David and informed him that we wanted the generator connection done to the barn electrical panel instead of the house panel.  I informed him that this should be an easier job that would take less time since the barn was open access and no drilling or cutting was required.  At this point the original bid estimate was no longer valid since the scope of the job had changed, but he did not indicate he was going to reduce the price for the work.  Knowing that I had 2 hours of labor pre-paid with the Big Deal I had anticipated only paying for the material cost when the work was done.

Jason and Mike were the electrical team who came to do the work.  Jason was the one who did the initial estimate for the work when we were thinking about installing it on the house.  These guys were totally professional and did a great job and these ratings should not reflect on them.  They arrived around 2:15 PM and were finished with the installation at approximately 4:20 PM, basically 2 hours of labor. Overall I was very pleased with the job and wished I had done it before all the bad weather.

I initially provided a stellar report on this website based on the great work of Jason and Mike.  I am now revising this report based on my less than satisfactory dealings with David, the owner after receiving the an invoice for $366 ($465 - $99 pre-paid).  After getting the invoice I sent David an email asking him to call me since I had questions about how much it was given the labor time should have been zero based on my pre-paid Big Deal so I was only expecting material costs.  This is when the trouble began with him.  He sent a reply to my email stating several things as justification for the extra labor costs that were completely false.  First he said the team had to make a trip back to pick up extra wire since the original job only called for 5 ft and the new one took 18 ft.  I called him on this because the team had the wire when they got here and before they arrived they didn't even know how much would be needed.  He next said the team had to wait on me for an hour because I was on a conference call and couldn't tell them where to put the generator plug.  Once again I called his bluff because I knew my wife had let them into the barn and they were in the process of installing the interlock switch when I arrived to show them the location of the plug.  He then proceeded to say that he had to charge extra labor because they had gotten stuck on the previous trip out and he had to pay them for their time.  Actually, I missed a client call due to having to help get them unstuck from the snow in my drive which several other cars, including my own had been able to navigate.  Even if this had been the case that he had to charge me, he never informed me of this ahead of time or I would have carried the electricians and their gear on up to the house in my own truck.  The last straw came when he said that he had to charge me labor for ordering the materials himself since I didn't have them already.  As I thought about this I agreed he might have a point until I took time to research the average cost of the items used on this project and found that even taking time to go out to the barn to ensure I had the correct material descriptions, it took me less than 30 minutes to put together an entire materials order (and I could get it all delivered with no shipping charge).  Based on this little exercise, and my conversation with Jason the electrician afterward, I found out that only two of the items had to be ordered (the interlock kit and the plug box) which should have taken even less time, and I found David had over-estimated the material cost on the original bid by roughly $50 dollars.

The rest of the story is that I received a call from Jason the electrician saying David was not going to pay him until I paid David.  This is just one more example of not only poor leadership on David's part, but also is a good indication of his lack of character.  As a result, I paid the invoice as written and decided to use the power of Angie's List to get the word out to be careful when purchasing services from Apex.  If you need a good electrician go to Jason direct.  If you see a Big Deal from Apex buy it with extreme caution since it will end up costing you much more than you bargained for in the beginning.  I will not recommend Apex to anyone and while I had asked Jason about other services they provide based on his excellent work, I will now take my remaining business elsewhere.  For the additional $200 he got out of me for this project, he is losing the potential for several thousand more in planned renovations we are doing this year and next.  The nice thing about the Big Deals is that you get to try before you REALLY buy.  I guess the silver lining is it worked in this case since we now know to stay away from Apex.

    Zo Construction and Handyman
eJeff was absolutely the best person for this job.  He was able to get on the job within 2 days of my purchasing his Big Deal for 8 hours of Handyman services.  We needed to have a section of wall and portion of the ceiling in our main floor bath repaired after having some plumbing replaced.  We also had to have a portion of the garage ceiling replaced for the same reason.
Jeff was friendly and professional and was able to repair the wall and ceiling very quickly.  I frankly did not think he would be able to get all of the work we had requested done within the 8 hours, but he far exceeded our expectations.  The work was done so well that we can't even tell that the wall was repaired.  The ceiling retexturing was done so well that the repairs are completely invisible.  He claned up the area after he was done so that we were immediately bale to enjoy the use of our bathroom without having to worry about doing the cleanup ourselves.
We will definitely hire Jeff's services in the future as we continue our remodeling efforts.

    Schaefer Improvements
After I contacted Steve, he immediately responded to me for an appraisal on a partial remodel for a small bathroom.  After the appraisal and estimate, I asked for a change from a surround wall over a tub to a walk-in shower install.  He accommodated my request with a reasonable estimate for the change.  He started and finished the job as promised.  During the shower install, the shower would not fit and be level in the wall space where the old tub and wall surround was so he installed additional hardwood to attach the shower and ensured the shower was level.  He added 1x4 trim around the top and sides of the shower.  I had concerns about the trim before he installed it on the sides because the placement of the vanity.  After the trim was installed, it was determined the trim would not work because there was not space for the vanity.  My husband replaced the original trim with a smaller trim.  I did not ask Steve to come back and replace the trim.  As agreeded, Steve and his crew came back a week later and installed the shower doors and moved the toilet flange over 2 inches from the wall per my request.  Steve was in constant communication with me from start to finish on this job.  Steve and his crew were very professional and polite.  The job area was cleaned up immediately and left in great condition.

Update as of July 8, 2014:  On March 21st, I called Steve due to some issues with the plumbing.  I had a plumbing company come out to fix the issues and they determined that there was problems with the plumbing due to the work that had been done by Schaefer Improvements.  Steve stated that he would refund me $200 for the troubles (even though it cost me $293 to fix).  He asked that I text him to remind him and where to send the refund.  I text him the reminder on March 22, 2014 at 1:26p.  On April 28, 2014 I text him again and he responded stating that he had sent it through Chase.  I still haven't received it.  I had text him again on May 19, 2014 for the refund and he stated that it was processing.  I still have not received anything or heard from Steve.

Ty spent about 6 or 7 hours at my house going through every room and the attic space.  He never found a reason for the smell in the room, but he found several issues that needed attention in my home.  He found roofing issues that could be repaired to extend the life of the roof and shingles. He found improper electrical wiring in my four electrical panel boxes.  He found an opening into the attic at the gable of one roof peak where maple seeds where blowing into the opening.  He found tracks of mice in the attic.  He found improper plumbing with my Reverse Osmosis system and water softener. I got a 24 page comprehensive report with photos of all the issues he found in my home.  The report Table of Contents included Report Overview, Structure, Roofing, Exterior, Electrical, Cooling/Heat Pumps, Insulation/Ventilation, Plumbing, Interior, Fireplaces/Wood Stoves, Maintenance Advice.  This report explained what he found to be out of code or safety issues and what maintenance issues he found long and short term.  Ty also showed me several of the issues to explain them to me when he found them during the inspection. The cost for the inspection was $600.  I chose a more thorough inspection. I realize now that the building inspector did not do a very good inspection and missed many items.
I asked if he knew anyone who could do the repairs.  He told me that he has a company to do the repairs.  I felt such confidence in him that we hired him to do the repairs.  He gave me an itemized list of repairs that we chose to have done.  He did repairs for the roof, gutters, plumbing and electrical system.
He repaired cracked shingles on the gable of my roof.  He changed some guttering which had been improperly installed.  He fixed the wiring issues in my electrical panel boxes that were improperly grounded.  The total for the repairs was $1620.
In May of 2013, we had Ty out to re-caulk our windows.  The cost of this was $900.  Because of the weather last fall, he was unable to do the caulking at the at that time.  So, we waited until spring to have the windows re-caulked.  He cut away the cracked caulking and repaired with new caulking.  He was careful to keep it clean and take away only what needed to be cut away.   He did not have to remove all the caulking around all the windows and doors, but to cut away the cracked and add the new.  He was here all day long and had to return the next day to finish the work.  It was a lot of work.  We have about 23 windows, three garage doors, two sets of patio doors and three exterior doors.  He did a very nice job.
We believe that we have found our handyman to do any future repairs on our home. He is trustworthy and very competent.  We highly recommend him.  He is so trustworthy, that we were confident of leaving him at our home when we had to leave.  We left the house unlocked so he could get inside if needed.  We don't feel that confident with most workers at our home.  We are totally confident of him and his work.
