    Elkhart Sharpening Service
The office receptionist was extremely helpful and friendly.  She went out of her way to give me directions to another service to handle what her company could not (fixing my chain saw).  And although she cautioned me about how busy they were at the moment,  my garden tools were ready for pick-up in only two days.  And the price, at $4 per tool, was unbeatable.

The staff were almost entirely offensive, incompetent, or too busy to do their job properly. The first nurse I saw put in an IV line. The vein in my hand and quot;blewand quot;, which was not her fault, but then she applied pressure to keep it from bruising and instead of holding my hand still, she kept waving it around in the air, gesturing as she talked -- in spite of the fact that I kept telling her she was hurting me severely. She had no sense of personal space; she sat on the bed, practically on my lap, to have me sign papers. She had no common sense either--she poked her head in the door later to ask if it were OK if my sister-in-law and her husband came in to see us. I did NOT want to see them, but they were obviously standing right there next to her where they could hear my reply, so I could hardly say no.
The nurse in recovery was downright cruel. She told me to relax and open my eyes, neither of which I was capable of doing at that point, and she was very impatient with me. I could tell her conversation with other nurses was more interesting to her than my distress. She told me to breath through my nose at one point, and then yelled at me for not breathing through my mouth. WIthout warning she swabbed my mouth with some disgusting mouthwash and then had the nerve to get mad at me for spitting it out.
The first shift nurse who took care of me in my room paid very little attention to me. I had a little bit to eat -- liquid diet -- in the evening and became nauseous, so I pressed the call button. By the time someone arrived, I'd already vomitted all over everything because I'd not been provided with anything for that purpose. The nursing assistant who had warned me about leaving my glasses on the food tray and watched me move them to my lap was the one who rolled up all the soiled bedding with my glasses which I never got back.
Nobody came to ask me how I was feeling until the night shift--the men on the night shift were great. They finally asked me if I needed pain meds -- up to that point I thought I was already receiving pain meds in my IV and didn't know I was supposed to ask if I needed more. It would have been nice if someone had informed me of that. The first nurse gave me an incentive spirometer and told me I should use it 10 times per hour while I was awake, but no one ever came back to ask if I'd used it or to see if I was using it correctly or having any breathing problems. Someone told me early in the morning that a test showed my potassium level was low and she was going to have someone give me a supplement. I inquired about that twice later in the day, but was eventually discharged without anyone ever bringing that pill.
The room I was put in was small, dingy and in need of a face-lift. There was barely room to put a chair for my husband to sit in, and the one they brought him made terrible loud noises every time he sat down in it. There was not a single drawer or cabinet to put our things in -- only the window ledge. The other lady in the room had to do her physical therapy right next to me and her therapist kept bumping into my bed while they were doing it.
I couldn't tell whether the kitchen was comptetent or not since the only food I requested that wasn't pre-packaged (gelatin, sherbet, etc.) was a bowl of cream of wheat. They did cook that without salt and serve it without sugar or sweetener even though I was not on any diet restrictions at that point. A person really shouldn't have to ask for that.
Besides the night shift nurse and nursing assistant, there were a few others who seemed good at their jobs. The anesthesiologist was pleasant and answered my questions without seeming to be in a big hurry. The lady at the admitting desk was pleasant and efficient. My surgeon listened to me and came highly recommended. My only complaint about him was that I didn't see much of him. I didn't see him before or after surgery, though he spoke to my husband after.

    Elkhart General Hospital
It is an excellent facility. They are wonderful people. They are up-to-date and modern. They have a very good nursing staff. We would have to look long and hard in this area to find a better facility. I am well taken care of there and their food is terrific. If it was more convenient I wouldn't mind having lunch there. They don't have cooks; they have chefs. We would absolutely use them again.

I wish their pricing was a little lower, but it is what it is. I am going to make my own plans with Billings in the near future so that my daughter doesn't have to go through what I just went through. I will use them again in the future.
