Business Description: Located in Shorewood, Il, Brakur Custom Cabinetry, Inc. has been providing high quality locally manufactured cabinetry since 1965. Brakur is the largest manufacturer of custom cabinetry in Northern Illinois with a 100,000 plus square foot, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and more than 80 employees. Brakur began just like any other small company. Brakur started by a dedicated and skilled woodworker and craftsman. Originally called, B and K cabinets, Brakur began in a small garage on the East side of Joliet. Equipped with only a table saw, a hand held router, and some small equipment, Ken Kurtz owner and founder, started manufacturing kitchen cabinets with these tools and a knack and desire to create the most beautiful and highest quality kitchen and bath cabinetry. Shortly thereafter, Brakur began experiencing great success. Brakur needed to relocate, and after careful consideration, built a new factory at its present location. Brakur originally broke ground with a 27,000 square foot building that would be better able to serve the people of the Joliet and Chicagoland area in both wholesale and retail areas. The business thrived and grew through the years, Brakur continued to maintain the same quality and dedication to fine craftsmanship upon which it was founded. As the years passed, Brakur has had to expand its building to over 100,000 square feet of production it has today. However, Brakur also had to overcome some large devastating disasters as well. On September 11, 1993, Brakur burned. The fire swept through half of the 100,000 square foot facility. Much of the building was destroyed and the losses totaled $2.5 million. At the time, Brakur had its largest ever backlog of orders. However, instead of panicking, Ken Kurtz went to work. Brakur moved equipment to the untouched half of the plant and scheduled extra shifts to complete orders. Ken's goal, was simple, to get employees back to work and complete deliveries. Ten long day's later, Brakur employees again were building the same high quality, custom cabinets found in the best-dressed kitchens of Chicago's west and southwest suburbs. By March 1994, the plant was completely re-built and Brakur's 30th anniversary was a celebration of hard work and dedication. Today, our philosophy remains the same. Now operated and managed by Chad Kurtz, Ken's son, our goals and principles remain unchanged. Traditional or chic, classic or modern, subtle or colorful, Brakur is still producing the finest quality of cabinetry that can be found. Today, Brakur employs 80 people from the Joliet and surrounding local communities. We only employ the finest local craftsman and artisans, and the most talented designers to help you realize your dream. Part of our success comes from a knack in design. Specifically designed by our experienced kitchen designers, Brakur's recently updated showroom features exquisite cabinetry displays, numerous door styles and finishes, and today's most sought after options and decorative accessories. Brakur maintains the finest finishes available today, including but not limited to, glazing, distressing, and old world finishes, just to name a few. Brakur specializes in custom kitchen and bath cabinets, bookcases, bars and entertainment centers. Brakur can transform any room in your home with the finest design and craftsmanship. Brakur can also provide an unmatched array of countertops including wood, laminate, quartz, granite and solid surface. Now in its second generation as a family owned and operated company, Brakur realizes that integrity, quality, service, reliability are all traits of a successful organization. At Brakur we preserve these characteristics. We do not take for granted the efforts of all employees to make Brakur the highest quality cabinet at a very competitive price. We remain as focused today, as in years passed, to bring your dream to life. We continually strive to meet our client's needs by researching the latest trends in the kitchen industry, to make sure, you, our client, experiences first hand, the finest cabinetry available, the Brakur way.

ARay installed, taped, mud and primed drywall in a new basement room. He was prompt to provide a quote and began work very quickly after I agreed to his proposal. He completed all the work in less than five days and the result was excellent. I would definitely hire him again.- Ed and Pat W.

FEd Eichele has stated to us that he stands by his work and that he will do whatever it takes, that they are accommodating, open and transparent. Beware, Ed knows all the right things to say, just don’t believe any of it. Following are the issues we had with Eichele & Valene Remodeling: • Needed to hire a second contractor to rip out and replace our newly installed tile floor and takeover our project. • Had to remove and replace wood trim • Paint quality grade with option of 2 brands stipulated in our contract was not followed. An untrue story was given as to why a cheaper grade had to be used. • Promises of a building permit and an inspector appointment never materialized (3 months). After blaming the City of Wheaton building department for an unexplainable lack of action it turned out that the city never received payment for the permit we paid Eichele & Valene to execute as part of the contract. • Our walls were painted and floor installed before the plumbing and electrical work had been started let alone the drywall being finished. Our second crew took advantage of the floor being exposed to perform plumbing and electrical work by removing floor boards vs. access through the basement ceiling as was planned by John Valene. • Lack of a consistent work schedule; multiple no-shows without warning. • They still owe us money per their own records. Details: Tile – Through research of manufacturer’s websites, the Tile Council of North America, and consulting with a member of National Tile Contractors Association, we were able to confirm that the tile floor was laid improperly and needed to be 100% replaced. Some of the installation related issues: Our warranty for the subfloor and the tile was void due to the use of cheap drywall screws used to fasten the Durock subfloor rather than the required “1-1/4" USG Durock™ Brand Tile Backer Screws for wood framing (or equivalent) or 1-1/2" hot-dipped galvanized roofing nails”. As a result of improper installation, there was so much unevenness and lippage all over the floor that we were tripping while walking on the tile. Nothing sat squarely or level on it. The lippage of many tiles was the same thickness as a quarter or thicker. (See photos) Trim – We upgraded our family room from carpet to tile. It may not be obvious to all homeowners that the baseboards are installed prior to installing carpet, thus touching the floor that the padding and carpet are rolled over. For tile, the baseboards should be installed on top of tile, which put the baseboards noticeably higher on the wall. Since the baseboards were never removed prior to installing the tile the end result was a family room with oddly short baseboards as they did not sit on the tile where it should be if installed correctly. Furthermore, the staining and varnishing of the shoes was dreadful. Application of conditioner, stain and urethane was performed outside in 40 degree weather all within 6 hours. Per the Sherwin Williams website one needs to, “Let dry completely (usually 24 hours)”. In addition, the site states that one should; “Apply stain only at the proper temperature. For most stains, 70 degrees Fahrenheit is the optimum, with the safety range from 50 to 90 Fahrenheit.” The worst part about this baseboard fiasco was the calculated deception exercised where the eating area meets the family room. They removed baseboard from the eating area where it was installed at the correct height for tile to rip ¾” off of the bottom in order to match the height of the baseboard of the family room which was at the correct height for carpet. (See photo) Paint – We believe that painting before the drywall, plumbing, and electrical work were finished was a tactic employed to give us the illusion of progress after weeks of no work being performed. It was an obvious ploy to distract us from the fact that no progress had been made in weeks. We have since had to repaint all surfaces but 3 walls. Windows – There is an entire fiasco with regard to undersized windows being installed. The additional framing required to install windows that were too small led to the threat of additional “Change Order” costs. One might question why someone would install the wrong size windows. Menards remade the incorrectly sized windows as ordering the wrong size windows was their mistake. Eichele & Valene told us that we owed them the cost of a second installation even though they should have stopped when they realized that the windows were the wrong size. (See photo)- Tom M.

AJames was an excellent choice for finishing the basement in our 1950s home. His attention to detail shows in his outstanding work. Work completed included demo-ing and rebuilding a staircase, building walls, electrical (through a subcontractor), drywall, paint, doors etc. He was able to complete the custom details such as built-in bookcases, a drink rail, barn door and recessed dry bar.- Brittany R.

AWe are very pleased with the work done by Dominic and his crew. The bathroom looks beautiful, communication was excellent, they were prompt every day, and responsive when any question or concern arose. In addition, our project was completed in January, 2018, and when a few minor things came up after it was completed, Dominic returned my calls and came our to make the necessary repairs and assure our complete satisfaction. Could not be happier!- Aileen G.

AExtremely happy with the Haris Inc's work remodeling our basement bathroom. As a result of having to tear out walls and floors for foundation work, we had the opportunity to make improvements to a basement that is a critical living space in our small house. The project involved replacing an ancient fiberglass shower stall with a new fangled solid surface manufactured stone unit, replacing tile, lighting, and paint in a small bathroom and replaced tile in a main laundry area. As is often the case with older homes (50's) the Haris crew ran into unexpected surprises that were covered up by previous homeowners. While expanding the shower to accommodate a standard 36" base Haris had to break concrete to move the drain, remove and relocate corroded iron pipe. They were also faced with significant floor pitch throughout the basement that was masked by old tile with tons of thin-set. The project lead presented us with creative options before taking any steps that added to the cost of the project. Importantly, the crew was extremely tidy and well aware that their work would be messy. Each day they laid out and picked up drop cloths, vacuumed (often while sanding or cutting) and stored their equipment to minimize the impact on our daily living.- Mark M.

AIt went far better than expected. Matt called us immediately, came out the same night to give a quote. His crew was then here the next morning and had it all done by 5:00 pm. Not only did they move all the furniture, but they put it all back. They plastered all the holes, removed the dimples in the ceiling and did a tremendous paint job.- Michael S.

AMark was great to work with on our kitchen remodel. We installed the IKEA cabinets ourselves, and he helped us with a variety of tasks to finish the project. This included trim work, installation of a peninsula (including building of a short wall on the end of the peninsula), installation and trim work for a new window, and plaster repair. He was pleasant to work with and was very good at cleaning up after the work was done. We would hire him again.- Julia M.

AFrom start to finish I was so impressed with the professional demeanor and focus on customer satisfaction by Mark and Yuri. Mark did a great job of ensuring the cabinets & trimwork were ordered correctly and delivered on time. His recommendation on under cabinet lighting was a beautiful addition to the kitchen. Cannot say enough about how quickly Yuri completed the demo, cabinet installation, tilework, plumbing & electrical and with great attention to detail. It was a joy to work with Mark & Yuri and I would highly recommend Modern View for any remodel work. This is a company of hard working, knowledgeable individuals who should take pride in the exceptional work they provide.- Helen S.

AMark is a great professional who was very punctual on both visits. He was also very honest and tried to reuse existing materials instead of insisting on new or more expensive ones. Our basement flooded so we needed part of it rebuilt to its prior conditions. The end result is exactly what we asked for. We would definitely hire him again!- Andrea S.
