Work was completed per schedule. David was good to work with and as the owner, salesman, quoter, and scheduler and who shows up with crew to do the work, there is accountability with one point of contact. Did not try to sell me more than I needed. Returned phone calls promptly and kept me up to date as work progressed.

The installers arrived later, but with a phone call. No problem. They then quickly worked to dig up the inside foundation, install a Triple Safe Sump pump, channel system, and a radon system. They were professional, got the work done in 2 days, and came back once to install something that was left out prior to. We have not had any major rains as of yet, so I don't know if it works, but I'm assuming if everything was installed properly, we will have no problems.

The radon system was installed, and it is working. However, it took our radon from 5 to 2.7. While this is a reduction, it is still above what the government suggests as acceptable for a radon system (the little pamphlet that comes back with the radon test results said to try and get the gas to below 2). We called Midamerica on this and they said they would come out and check. They did, and they were prompt. It was suggested that we test again, at our expense, and then they would try and seal around the dewatering system to prevent gas coming up or down through that. We have not received our test kits to retest the gas, and when we do I will add to this post. Midamerica said, contractually, all they had to do was to get the radon below 4. While this is the case, since we spent nearly $1000 on the system, I would like it to be below the recommended 2.

In all, I would recommend Midamerica, as of today, to anyone needed a dewatering system. The installers worked well and quick and were professional. They promptly addressed our issues.

Additionally, I will add to this review once we have had a large rain.

Update: They are working with us to mitigate the radon to under 2. A man came out and sealed the dewatering system further to prevent air from coming up through the ground. They gave us 2 more tests and we will test again. They have been great about working with us.

After the two tests, the radon is under 1. Good stuff!

The dewatering system also needed to be buried outside. It wasn't done initially because the ground was frozen. They contacted us, and promptly buried the pipes outside. We have a watering system outside, and I don't think they hit anything. I will have to check on that. But I know they were careful. We also needed more pipe outside, so as to ensure the water was piped far enough away from the house. They came out and did that for an additional fee.

Update: we have had tons of rain, and were able to test if the system worked. It did keep buckets of water out of our basement. However, something was not installed correctly, as all of the cement poured over the trench is completely damp. When we called, we were told this was normal. However, it is not normal to have water wicking up through the floor. We opened the little access points to see what was up in the channels, and there is an inch to two inches of sitting water. We think this wasn't graded properly and the water isn't draining into the sump as it should. We insisted that someone come out, and the woman on the line was very rude. The earliest someone could come out was in a month. We paid thousands of dollars for this, and it should be working correctly. Waterproofing shouldn't mean water wicking up through the cement they poured. I will update when they come back and check it.

Update: Gary came out around 4:30pm on July 22, 2015. This was after a month of waiting. When I asked when he would arrive, the same rude lady that I spoke to earlier, said she couldn't give a time, but that it would be late afternoon. So, I waited by the phone all day until he called.

When Gary arrived, he was immediately rude and condescending. There are areas of the channel in the floor that are not connected underground with the plastic. These are the areas where there is the most water wicking up through the cement. When Gary spoke with me, he consistently was rude, abrasive, and condescending. He told me it was condensation and there was nothing else he could say. When I asked for further explanation, Gary said, "What do you do?" He then said, "I have worked at this job and been in the classroom for years." He then said, after I told him my line of work, "I wouldn't come to your job and tell you how to graphic design. I wouldn't tell you how to draw the lines and where to put the pictures." This was unprofessionalism to the extreme. He continued this unprofessionalism every time I asked a question, and then proceeded to tell me that if he were to open the little access panel to check inside the channel system, he would charge $65 for an evaluation. He said he would waive the fee, but I am not sure if that will happen. Overall, I am dissatisfied with the customer service, to say the least. Basically, the answer is that this water around the perimeter is because we have a humid basement and if we want to alleviate the problem, we need to install a (surprise!) very expensive dehumidifier in the basement. Guess who sells those? You got it.

I have recommended this company to two other people. I now regret that. Perhaps there are good experiences with Midamerica Basement. Maybe it depends upon whom you are designated. Gary was from Iowa. Maybe those locally are more professional. Who knows. But, I do know that I will never recommend this company. Perhaps if there were a level of professionalism and general customer service, this story would end differently.

Update: August. 2015: they decided to give us a trial of a dehumidifier to see if that will help the problem. We are unsure if it has helped because we have had little rain. I'm not certain, aside from redoing the perimeter, that they could fix this. I'm pretty sure it was simply installed incorrectly.

When the window team showed up, they check the wall for plum to ensure the success of the window install. We had drywall up before so this couldn't be done until this point. Our wall, was not plum and needed stabilization if we wanted the window to be a successful install along with the wall to be corrected. We opted to have the wall stabilized so that delayed the window but was necessary. They scheduled us as soon as possible and the guys came and did the stabilization. When they came it was cold and wet outside, but there were no complaints and they did exactly what they needed to do. Once that was done, we rescheduled the window work. That went smoothly, quicker than I thought, just as they'd stated. The wall anchors needed some adjusting and they came back out to do that.

When it was all done, the wall is stabilized for the life of the house, the egress window, 4x4, looks wonderful and the light is unbelievable and makes the basement not onlya pleasant room to be in but is now a part of our square footage of our house when we go to sell. The ventilation window is a simple basement window but it opens either direction so we can get air flow in that room and it looks good as well.

Both teams, the anchors and the window, were polite, informative men that did exactly what they said they would do. I work from home so I was there and they told me when they would do what, when they would arrive and finish and were true to their word. The workmanship is top notch and they were all nice, considerate guys that I would welcome back for any future work we opt to do.

Although MidAmerica never technically did the work, they started the work, left it undone and absolved themselves of any responsibility even to answer phone calls. It all cost me a lot of time and money and the problem still isn't fixed. Would I recommend them? I think not, and I certainly wouldn't trust Mr. Hallman. |

They were wonderful from the beginning. A representative came and looked at our basement, took measurements, and gave us an estimate. He very carefully explained and showed us what would happen each step of the way. He was very easy to understand, and answered all questions. Communication with the company was very efficient. The work was completed in 2-3 days, exactly as was explained to us. The team was very efficient and cleaned up everything. Our basement is now dry and comfortable, no musty smell. We have added living space to our home, and with the dry basement and egress window, we have had family sleep in the basement with no worries about air quality or lack of emergency exits.
We had other estimates that were lower, but I consider this company the cadillac of basement de-watering, and their higher costs are worth paying considering the quality product, quality workmanship, and the end result. I also know if there is any problem, I can call them and they will respond quickly.

They originally put in a basement de-watering system for us - 2 yrs. ago I think. They come back yearly to check for any problems. My husband is always the one there when they come, but he says he is very satisfied each time.

The whole crew was very nice and professional. They even helped my wife with angry neighbors that were upset about the work to be done. Thus, the four guys were courteous and got the job done on time.

Josh came out for an estimate early in the summer. He was very helpful and was not trying to sell us a product or service, but was instead focused on solving our problem. His estimate beat the competitors', plus he was very personable and professional. A few weeks later, he came along with two of his team members and finished the job in about four hours. We have had no water issues since his work. He cleaned up nicely. I highly recommend this company.

I liked that the price was reasonable. However, I did feel like the professionalism just wasn't there. They showed up without the correct equipment and did a few other things to make me feel this way. In general it seemed liked they showed up late and were just lacking a professional manner.
