    Chicago Lawn Mower Svc Inc
I'm disappointed.  I just called to inquire about a tune-up for my lawn mower.  I live 10 minutes away from their shop, according to Mapquest (I live on the east side of Park Ridge).  Despite the fact that their Angie's List description specifically says "NO TRAVEL CHARGES," he told me it would be $50 just in travel charges to pick up my mower.  I have no way to get it there myself.   He might as well have just said, "no thanks, we don't want your business."   I like to be treated more professionally, kindly, and FAIRLY when I call a small business.

Went in with a broken pull cord on a lawn mower.
You have to enter the shop from the rear, so don"t bother to park on the street.  Go around and enter the alley and follow the alley to the shop.  You can't miss it.  It is where a large number of mowers and snow blowers are parked.
The owner or manager [ not sure which but he was in charge ]  immediate came to meet me and looked at the broken part and explained that the cords usually break when the spring inside the pull start device snaps.  He showed me that that was in fact the case.  He gave me the option of having the part ordered; but suggested that he could simply provide me with a used part with a brand new cord for only $18.00.  The used part was in very good condition and worker perfectly.

He sold me a lemon Toro lawn mower and spent 2 years unsuccessfully trying to fix it.  The owner told me he would make it right but when the warranty ran out after 2 years, he dumped that piece of junk back in my lap. The mower either runs poorly or not at all.

It was incredibly convenient to have them come to the house to perform the service and not have to worry about trying to load the machines in my car.  I was very pleased with the performance of the lawnmower over the summer.  I'm expecting that the snowblower will be ready to go come winter.

It was difficult to find their place, no big sign out front. You must drive around to the back of the offices to find where they are taking in lawn mowers to realize you are at the right place. I took my Toro lawnmower to Bill's Lawn & Power Equipment. I just needed my pull cord fixed and the blades looked at to see if they were sharp enough. I told them I put a lot of money in it the season before for a tune-up and asked what it needed. I am newly divorced and need some advice on how to do all this. The man at the counter was very abrupt, said it needed a tune-up, never said they would look at it & see what needed to be done. Read later online that it doesn't have to have all that work every year. (The 2 tune-ups were over $300 and I could have gotten a new mower for that). Mower returned without being wiped off or clean. It worked fine. I felt 5 minutes of the man's time to answer my questions could have saved me unnecessary, expensive work.

    Batteries Unlimited
I called to see if they would have a solution for me. The woman who answered the phone hadn't heard of 24 volt batteries, but suggested I bring it in so they could take a look at it. Though it was a long drive, I figured it would be worth it if I could get an alternative to the Internet option with expensive shipping. When I got there, the owner knew exactly what I was talking about and he showed me that they could connect two 12 volt batteries in series. The batteries were $40 each and he said he'd charge about $10 for the labor. It sounded like a good deal to me, so I said he should go ahead. They found the parts to securely create a jumper between the two batteries, then helped me connect it back to my mower to make sure it would work. It did. I the end, he didn't even charge me for the extra work, just the batteries and tax.

I've used them before. It took quite a while but we had a bad winter. They do really good work. They are a pleasant company and they don't try to rip me off. The timing was the only problem but that was because it was winter.

When I took it in, the guy explained that it would either cost $50 to fix or $120, depending on what he found when he opened the lawn mower up. Based on my sloppy maintenance and laziness, I figured it would be $120. I was right. Turnaround time was less than a week during busy season. The job they did was excellent. Because I am so dismally lacking in any finesse about how to use machines, I had to take the lawn mower back three times to ask basic questions when the lawn mower wouldn't start. Not only did the guy show me what I was doing wrong and make a couple of adjustments, he did not charge me a dime. Mind you, if he had charged me, I wouldn't have cared because his explanations alone were worth a nominal fee. Most morons would know how to get the mower started on their own. But I am not just any moron. I have trouble changing light bulbs. If I ever need the mower repaired again, Frank's is the only place I'd consider taking it.

Overall, a very good job. They picked up the snowblower and dropped it back off. They called to confirm both the pick up and drop off. I needed a new carburetor.r They called to get an o.k. before doing the work. When they came to drop it off, they went through what I should be doing to keep it running well. Very helpful.
