Keith arrived promptly and was here for about an hour. He was very nice and we had a quick conversation about his findings before he left. He said he would email a report in about a week. Weeks went by and I never heard anything. I emailed him and the office and called the office and have not received any response.

    Green Attic Insulation
Andrei and his crew, Dimitry and Matt , were fantastic.  Andrei came out about a month earlier to evaluate our home for air leaks and insulation deficiencies. He utilized a blower test and a thermal camera.  I was able to follow him around our home and he showed me everything.  A few days later, he sent me a quote for insulating and repair of the deficiencies.  Some of the repairs I was able to do myself, but the attic insulation and sealing was performed by Dimitry and Matt.
The furniture and the room was first draped in plastic to keep thing dust free. They then spent all day in the attic looking for and sealing can lights, our whole house fan, any pipes and ventilation ducts from our HVAC that protruded through our second floor ceiling into the attic.  They made sure all eve vents would not be plugged by the insulation by placing baffles and securing them. They built a plywood extension around the whole house fan, the attic entrance and a skylight so they could blow in the cellulose insulation to the proper R-value (we chose R-60 for insulation value and soundproofing). After this, they blew in cellulose via a hopper in the truck and  a long hose that went through our attic access.  When they were done, they showed me their work--it looked like a snow storm of denim in the attic.  It was perfectly silent when I peered through the attic entrance!  I have no doubt that they did a great job.
Andrei emailed me a few days later as a followup.  He said if there were any problems to give him a call.  His service was excellent and I highly recommend him.  It's tough to find an honest and hardworking contractor these days, but I think we found one in Andrei and his crew.  Thanks Andrei!

Smart Sealed - Insulation Weatherization Audits
In the end, I think the whole process was worth it. I found SmartSealed on Angie's List, and called them, and they were the ones who told me about the Nicor/ComEd Home Energy Savings Program. In total, the program saved me about $1400, if you include the free audit and the various energy saving products I was given at the time of the audit.

There were some hiccups. CSG (the energy auditor), ComEd/Nicor program and SmartSealed did not communicate efficiently. It took a long time to get all the paperwork through. After the energy audit, I didn't hear from SmartSealed for about a month because there was a problem with the estimate that the auditor had given me. Apparently he had underestimated the cost. CSG was kind enough to offer to make up the difference, because they had already given me the underestimated cost and I signed the papers. So I benefited from this error. But I do sort of wish that it had all been more efficient so I didn't have to take so many days off work (3 total) to get it all done. Luckily, I get work-from-home days so it was not a huge problem, just a minor inconvenience. After the work was done, SmartSealed continued to contact me for payment even though I had alreayd given my creidt card information to the guys who were at my house. Turns out there was a miscommunication and they hadnt' charged my card yet because the paperwork I signed had the wrong cost estimate, again. Not a huge deal, just another inconvenience.

As for the work itself, SmartSealed is very professional and always arrived exactly on time. The people were very courteous and never disrupted me. They put down mats and vacuumed after they left to keep the mess to a minimum. They did the blower-door fan test and checked all the necessary safety things. The people in charge took time to explain things to me so I did not feel like there were just a bunch of strangers in my house doing weird stuff. There was also some great mentoring going on - sort of tangential, but it's nice to see that I'm patronizing a company that values young people and on-the-job training. Even the younger members of the team were extremely courteous and professional to me.

Unfortunately, since they finished their work, I have not noticed any major difference. Part of that is, I assume, because I always keep the thermostat very low so it's always cold in my house. Another reason is because since my house was so poorly sealed in the first place, they were not able to bring it to the maximum air tightness recommended. Like I said, my house is very old and constructed in a way that you would expect in Florida, not Chicago. I put N/A in the and quot;qualityand quot; column because I haven't gotten my next utility bill yet, so I'm not sure how much it has really hleped. Still, I am glad that I did it because of the great ComEd/Nicor incentives and the fact that I can put the airsealing information on my real estate listing when it comes time to sell- which we expect to be within the next 2 years.

Overall, I highly recommend SmartSealed, especially if you can jump on the ComEd/Nicor program!

Smart Sealed - Insulation Weatherization Audits
Chuck, Dave, and John first set up drop cloth to protect carpeting. Then did complete walk-through of areas to be worked on examining what kind of work was to be done. Ran initial pressure test then did all insulating, followed by 2nd pressure test with blower door, overall improvement of 15%.

Smart Sealed - Insulation Weatherization Audits
They were on-time and professional, and everything seemed to go well. We'll know how much impact it makes when we see several months of gas bills. Hopefully our usage will drop!
