    Metro Construction and Remodeling
Very smoothly. My phone calls were either answered or they were returned within the hour; which was important to me. They did remodeling in my house and when I moved, I hired them to remodel in my condominium.

Things went well at first. The two Elko men were helpful and understanding as I had so many decisions to make regarding the reconstruction. I must say I was in total shock and feel like I made decisions in a fog. As time went on, it became more difficult. I was not happy with the accounting system that was used. They would tell me what Allstate allocated for a specific thing and I had to stay within that or pay the extra cost. However, I never got anything from Allstate telling me what those allocations were. I had to trust Elko. There was major electrical work that had to be done - from fuses to circuit breakers. Problem is, years later, we had some electrical issues, small explosions in the outside meter and I had an electrical co and Com Ed come out. They discovered that there was a short from wire not properly connected as well as none of the electrical was grounded! We had paint peeling the very next year in the first floor water damaged apartment. I had explained that the lathe and plaster that was used in the original construction had too much lime in it and in order to prevent peeling paint you need to use an exterior oil based primer. They did not do that, so the very next year I had peeling paint in three rooms. We now are have some plumbing issues and I need to have the tub drain in the second floor apartment rodded out. However, when Elko did the reconstruction, they did not replace the tub access that was in the linen closet. So they are doing to have to break through the wall in order to access it. Over the years various things have come to light - electrical outlets put in upside down, louvered doors not completely painted, fixtures loose and not flush with the ceiling. It was a very traumatic experience in my life, and I must admit I was not in any condition to check their work to every detail. I don't believe that the City of Chicago inspectors ever came out to examine the work either. However, now I am dealing with the results of their work. I would not recommend them and would not use them again.

    Chicago Permit Services
Sofia and her staff at Chicago Permit Services are the BEST!  My wife and I were remodeling our kitchen, and even though our neighbors said that we were nuts, we wanted to follow the rules and get a building permit.  In Chicago you need a permit for almost anything, no matter how small the job.  The City claims that they have streamlined the permit process, but for a private citizen that may only pull a permit once in their lifetime, it couldn't be more confusing and inconvenient.  No wonder people don't bother getting a permit.

Based on the review of others, I hired Chicago Permit Services, and it was $400 very well spent.  Sofia was able to cut through all the red tape and get us a permit within days, but that was only the beginning of her outstanding service.  When requesting an inspection, I made a mistake that resulted in the City canceling the inspection on the day of the inspection.  When I contacted the Chicago Department of Buildings to rectify the issue, the response I received was "What do you want me to do?  You screwed up!". With the threat of my kitchen remodel coming to a screaming halt, I called Sofia for her help.  Within the hour, I received a call from the Chicago Department of Buildings saying that an inspector would be there the next day.  Without Sofia, my only recourse would have been to get my alderman involved, taking several days, and by then, the construction crew would have ran out of work and would have moved to their next job.

The lesson of my tale of woe is that when a permit is needed, HIRE CHICAGO PERMIT SERVICES!

Some good but mostly bad. We contacted 13 reccommended builders from Angie's list. All but one was very polite. Guess which one was not? Victor sounded like he knew what he was talking about but came off as arrogant and inflexible. Perhaps he did not want the job. Of the 7 prices we got (some did not bid for various reasons, health, unavailable, etc...) Victor was the highest even though we stressed that if this project was not fungible we would not go forward. Only $160,00.00 over the lowest bid. High price, bad only question is who reccomended them? I can not comment on the quality of their work because we did not get that far. FYI, we did not chose the lowest bidder but rather someone we were comfortable with.

The foreman was a really nice guy and he tried to make me happy. They went above and beyond with a couple items, such as wall insulation in demo'd areas and window molding replacement. However, the did not level the floor correctly, installed cracked tiles, started tiling at the middle of the walls so the cove base end about 3/4" above the floor, have very wide caulking at tub base to cover gap in floor tile, and failed to protect the bathroom door. They also accused me a lying about its condition before they started, not that they fixed it. They also bought twice as much tile then was needed, which I can't return. They have yet to come back to fix anything or return calls. The manager called to check on status of an environmental form when I notified him of the issues. He promised resolution, and never called back.

    My Remodeling Service, Inc.
In the first bathroom, the major problem was with the quality of the tile work, which is why I requested a different tiler for the master bath. The major problems came with the master bath. The steam shower simply didn't work, nor did the ceiling fan respond correctly on the humidity sensitivity setting. The control for the steam shower had been placed outside the shower instead of inside of it as per instructions. This required opening a wall in the master bedroom to run the wire to the shower wall and drilling a hole in the shower tile. It still didn't work. I had lanny, come back yet again, and this time when I came home from work to see what was done, the tub was no longer working and Lanny and Carlos were gone. Lanny promised it would be taken care of, but in spite of several calls and texts, I never heard from her again. Here' s the part I assume responsibility for. I had paid her in full, because I knew she needed the money, and mistakenly thought she would make good on any mistakes as her contract warranties. SHE DID NOT!!! It required a licensed electrician, and an additional which it turned out she hadn't used and an additional $1055' to correct the numerous mistakes made. They hadn't brought in a separate 240 line for the steam, connecting it to existing wiring instead, had burned out the tub control, in their attempt to fix the problem, and had completely wired the ceiling fan wrong. Lanny Perez lacks integrity, when it comes to honoring the contract she entered inti with me. I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS COMPANY .

    Designers Point Inc
We were referred to Karen and Dick by an architect who had
worked on a prior project with us. From the start, they were attentive to our
goals and made suggestions that not only solved some of the problems in our old
kitchen, but also fit our budget. Their installers completed the project on
schedule and addressed all of our concerns promptly. The result is a beautiful,
functional, modern kitchen that blends well with the rest of our home and
allows us to enjoy cooking again! We originally did not plan to hire a
designer, but are very glad we did!

    iBuild Inc
Jay Borrero has worked with us on two different projects. The iBuild inc has done a great job on our projects. Jay has helped us build our new roof, and the back porch stairs. The results were excellent and the quality of work is great. Jay has been very flexible and helpful in dealing with my parents who don't speak good English.  Jay and iBuild inc has been very professional and accommodating to all our needs and concerns. I am looking forward to work with Jay again  in future and strongly recommend them to everyone.
    Thanks Jay!

An incredible experience. Eugene is a very skilled builder and very patient and responsive to the usual complexities of a major home addition. He also made great suggestions along the way to improve the design. I was not gouged in price for a few changes that occurred within the project. Project was completed within the time and cost estimate. Builder returned years later to correct a few settling cracks in drywall at no extra charge.

    I would highly recommend him.
