SHAG BARK PET RETREAT & SPA
Weve been going to Shagbark for years, and weve had nothing but positive experiences, with boarding, grooming, daycare, and training. We recently started scent work classes with our golden retriever, Jack, and he LOVES it! The instructor, Cathi, provides variety each week, and makes the class really fun for the dogs as well as the handlers. I highly recommend scent work if youre looking for something different and challenging to do with your canine family member.

Very pleased with this place. My boy cannot stand for long amounts of time which makes it difficult for the groomer to trim the areas I request but they still get the job done. He comes home trimmed, brushed, soft and pretty!

Every Thursday, for the last several years, Kathy has groomed my dog Jake, who has severe allergies.
We have a standing appointment each week; Kathy is a one-person shop so often she books up weeks in advance (especially around holidays!)
Jake's allergies leave his skin covered in dander; he has no fur on his stomach, chest and neck. He scratches himself raw and bloody because he is so itchy year-round. Among the things he is allergic to are:  wool, dust mites, cats, ants, cockroaches, 3 specific types of pollens, elm trees, maple trees, chicken, all grains and dairy. He wears a shirt (similar to a "onesie" for a baby, except made for a dog, called a "Pet Medical Shirt", every day). So, in addition to a very strict diet, anti-histamines, steroids and antigens, we bathe him twice a week to keep him comfortable (we even removed the carpeting in our home). Jake goes to Kathy's shop each Thursday at 4:30 p.m. She coaxes him into the tub with grain free biscuits, bathes him with a  Duoxo shampoo and coconut oil, and carefully dries him so as to not irritate his skin any more. I am thankful to Kathy being there for us each week!
Jake is a very happy lab/beagle mix who we rescued in 2011 at the age of 4. We're not sure how or why he developed his allergies but if he was an angry or sad little dog, nobody would blame him. Instead he's a happy little alpha dog, the boss of his two younger brothers, and the lead of our pack!

She's an animal person and she's amazing with the animals. She doesn't let the pets roam free. My dog does not get along with other dogs, that was my biggest concern. For a lot of other groomers, the dogs just roam free in the grooming salon and they treat it like its a day care so they can see other dogs and run around. But I couldn't bring my dog to one of those places. She was originally at the pet hospital and she left to start her own place. She still keeps the dogs separated from one another so that there's no potential of them getting into fights or anything. So I like that.

I got a recommendation from an aquaintance and I called them the next day. They got back to me right away and I set up an appointment. Abbey arrived a little early and I explained that one of my dogs was a little fearful of most things, but she did great. She met the dogs in the house and both dogs seemed to take to her right away. Abbey did a beautiful job and I will definitely use her services again.

Let me first say that my Chihuahua is not real friendly. In fact she may bite if she doesn't know you. She absolutely loves it at Shag Bark. She gets lots of TLC there. She came home clean and happy.

We have had Chita about 5 years now. Its a long story but I literally found her in the middle of the road looking up at cars going both ways. We went out of town shortly after that and boarded her at Shag Bark. When we got back a tech carried her out of the back and put her on the floor. She ran over and licked my hand then ran back to the tech. The people that work at Shag Bark are really great and Chita love them. When we have to board its ALWAYs Shag Bark

I have an 18 year old Am Eskimo who desparately needed a bath. Given his age and arthritis, he requires delicate handling. I had an appointment a week before this Saturday but had to cancel due to his hips being bad. I rescheduled on Wed and had an issue with an eye injury. Then got him in on the following Saturday. Throughout, they were very accommodating with his injuries, made every effort to get him in on a "good day" and when there catered to his special needs. They "staged" him to avoid extended time on the table or in the bath and got him through as quickly as possible. I really appreciated their attention to his needs and assurance that his well being was their utmost concern. He handled it well and looked beautiful. They have a unique approach wtih dogs out loose, which removes a lot of the anxiety of being caged. All in all, they did a fantastic job, were extremely accommodating and sweet bear.

Kathy bathes my dog Jake each week and she does a wonderful job!  For about a year now, Jake has a standing appointment every Thursday at 3:00 for a bath.  Sometimes if there is a particular shampoo I want Kathy to use (e.g. like an oatmeal shampoo or a prescription shampoo) I bring that with.  If I don't bring one with I ask Kathy to use something that she has in stock, like an oatmeal shampoo or something else.  She bathes him with care each week, then dries his coat, dremmels his nails if they are too long and cleans his ears.  She does a wonderful job, and her prices are very reasonable!

    DOG DAY AFTERNOON
It's obvious that they love the dogs because they greet the dogs and they take care of them with the care that they would their own animals I believe. My vet recommended them as the place to go. If a dog were to get nigged or stuff like that or if they felt the dog needed to have attention, they take care of it right away - they treat it as an emergency situation that needs to be addressed right away.

We love this place and so does our dog! We call it a "spa day" for him. The dogs are not cooped up in a crate...they are allowed to hang out with each other and the groomers which seems to make for a much more relaxing experience for the dogs.
My dog was quite hostile to groomers before due to several bad past experiences. The owner took my dog and personally worked with him to get him comfortable with the process again. They are very flexible and I've never had any trouble getting an appointment.
We've been using them for several years now and I have no plans to stop!
