The Basement Men & The Concrete Man
This is my first adverse review on Angie's List after using it for 3 years (w/ my husbands account totaling 5 years). My husband told me not to hire them but I wanted my bath done asap given a pending surgery, and I thought I would give the contractor a second chance. When we moved to this area, my husband used him for a quote, and the contractor yelled at my husband saying that he did not give free quotes. My husband is the most gentle humble doctor you could meet. We were out bid on that house. But when I called the Basement Men for this job (a partial bathroom remodel) I did not know it was the same man that yelled at my husband. I realized it when he came to quote the job. My husband let me make the decision, and i regretfully hired them. When working the job they were very punctual. The initial contract was for $3900 but the work was not properly assessed. The old bathroom floor was laid on old tile. The worker said he needed to rip out all the tile and lay a new floor. They request an additional $800 stating they needed 90 square feet to lay the floor. I was surprised by the lack of knowledge assessing the job. The largest area in the bath is 7x6. - it's odd shaped. I kept going back to them with the measurements because I had to buy tile. They needed 45 tiles (24" by 6") and used 56. It looks beautiful and I'm glad I bought new tiles. We, the homeowner ripped out the pre-existing tile at the workers request and it was a terrible experience. The contractor said I should have not listened to his worker who would not do it. The shower fixtures were the same brand as the old one to avoid ripping the walls out but one pipe was not compatible, hence extra $100 for soldering. When it came to installing the radiator, it was so stressful with arguments. I could hear the worker yell on the phone to the contractor. The worker told me he could not install the radiator. It was simple. This installation required two new pipes to be soldered in the crawl space under the bathroom. It wasn't the best job working in the crawl space but that was the only issue. I was told it could not be done because the pipes were in between the drywall and outside (it didn't make sense given potential freezing), but when I evaluated the job under the crawl space, with the worker, removing the insulation around the pipes, the worker saw the pipes and how it could be done. The contractor asked me if I knew of this difficulty as if I set him up. I was surprised by the lack of common sense. After the radiator was installed, I had to call my heating contractor to bleed the radiators because too much air was let into the system and the workers did not know how to do it properly. When the bathroom was finished, my countertop was late, so the contractor told me to hold back $100 so I could ensure he came back. But a few days later, that Thursday, the contractor bullied me on the phone for the balance. I paid him. He drove over to get the $100 that night. I paid thinking if he didn't finish the job, given all the stress already, I'd write a bad review. The countertop came 3 days later. I contacted him thereafter, this was November, but his worker was on vacation, and on vacation in December. In January he was on vacation (this is all in emails) and in February, he called me back saying he needs to talk to his worker. He texted me saying he needs extra money to lay the "new" countertop. New? I wonder if he was twisting the truth or actually not very smart. The measurements are slightly off, so it's best the contractor does it. Also the radiator was installed slanted so at night when the heat is turned lower, the water drips and drips out of the radiator. The experience was not professional and not finished. Also, my husband came home early from work one day, and the contractor and worker did not hear him enter. They were using the worst profanity about a customer. I never confronted them on this as it was very embarrassing. Maybe they knew when they left and saw my husband home. Overall, I found this contractor untrustworthy with his judgment and integrity. I regret this negative review but I would never hire him again. I read a previous negative review about this contractor and his response was to deflected/changed the facts to suit him. Bottom line: given the contract, he didn't not finish, and it's so simple to do.

This is the first review I have ever left for someone....

It's been installed just over a year now and we love it as much as the day it was finished.

He is an honorable business man with fair prices, attention to detail and he answers his phone!

I was on a tight budget for this project and Paul and his crew exceeded my expectations.

I thought I had already review this project. Excellent deal and service. Quality workmanship. Highly recommend. They also installed new shower facets at a very low price. Thereafter, I wasn't getting adequate hot water and they sent back someone within 2 hours to evaluate it. I continue to use them.

It went very badly.  The original parquet which they sanded and refinished looks like a washboard and the finish is striped.  One of the rooms they did three times; on the third attempt, they left drips of finish that I worked on for several hours because we didn't have any confidence that it would be better if they did that room a fourth time.

The parquet is delaminating from the subfloor they installed.  We informed them in March of the problem and told them that, if the parquet continued delaminating, we would need them to come back.  The delamination continued.  Phone calls to Nebojsa were unanswered.  Finally, on May 24,  Nebojsa sent his Dad to remove some of the pieces of parquet and to glue and screw the subfloor into the concrete underneath.  He said that his son would call to let us know when they were coming back.  On June 3, I called Nebojsa and he said that he would come the following day.  He came, but he didn't do anything but look at the problem.  Follow-up phone calls to him were not answered.

We now have a parquet floor with chunks of parquet missing.  Nebojsa has said he will do nothing more and has invited us to sue him.

The day my review was posted, Nebojsa telephoned and threatened to place a lien on the house; he offered that he "might" not place the lien if the review were taken down.

Update 1/20/2014:  Our dispute with Kovach Flooring has been fairly settled.

    Simon's Designed Hardwood Floors
Totally impressed with quality of workmanship and professionalism of service.  As a real estate broker, I had a sale that was dependent on having the squeaky hardwood floors of a condo removed and new sub-flooring and new hardwood floors installed.  Perfection was needed in a limited amount of time.  I obtained several estimates for the owner of the condo.  Not only was Simon's estimate the second to the lowest, his demeanor made us feel confident he was the right person for the job.  He wanted to make sure the work was done in accordance to condo regulations so the owner would have no problems.  Simon also prepared a sample board of the hardwood and finishes so the future buyer of the condo could approve workmanship and finish before he started.  Simon had a tight time schedule and worked tirelessly to meet the dead line.  Needless to say, my reputation was at stake because I had recommended him after finding him on Angie's List.  The sale of the condo was also at stake.  Simon absolutely delivered!  I will definitely use Simon in the future for my flooring needs and will confidently refer him to other clients.  You will not be disappointed.Simon is a pleasure to work with and has the skills and work ethic to complete your flooring needs.  Thank you, Simon!

We were quite pleased with Jack Kowalczwk and his crew of two workers. The tile work, carpentry, drywall, and electrical work was excellent. They started and finished the project right on schedule. On a daily basis, they cleaned the work area very well. The workers were polite and accommodated the minor changes we made along the way.
There were no extra fees, and their pricing seemed quite reasonable based on two other quotes we received for the job.
We plan to bring back over in the near future for kitchen remodeling.

I contacted several remodeling/construction companies that were all highly rated on Angies List. What impressed me the most about Jack was his willingness to please and how much he valued his top notch reputation. He wants to make certain that his customers are highly satsisfied. He succeeded beyond my very "demanding" expectations. Way to go!

Their price for the same carpeting was $900.00 less than home depot and no comparison with service and helpfulness. The men that laid the carpet were very professional and neat. Very happy with everything.

I called and talked to Fred and they helped me right away. I brought a sample of the carpet, and he followed me home to see which one would work the best. They came out in a couple of days to do the work, too.
