    Received an offer from the via mail. I went online and schedule/paid for the service. The service was completed the day scheduled. It did rain the day of the service, I called them concerned that it would damage the seal-coat but they were closed at the time of my call and never bothered to return my messages.

    Before I address the work done by the franchisee of Pave, Seal and Stripe called "1-800-Asphalt", I will add some perspective to my letter scores of C for the various categories for this company. Overall, my experience with contractors for 30 years of home ownership and reinforced by recent contacts I had with paving companies which not surprisingly included the lack of call backs, the no shows at specified times with no calls to re schedule and late arrivals, causes me to have low expectations of most home repair contract companies. So, while I graded 1-800-ASPHALT a C, which in school is average, understand that this is a grade on a "curve" meaning this company is average among companies who don't return calls and stand you up with no explanation and arrive late. Now for my specific experience with 1-800-ASPHALT. On 4/4/17, I called for an estimate but did not get a visit from the owner until 4/18/17, I may have called again between 4/4/ and 4/18, but I don't recall. The spontaneous 4/18 visit did not result in a bid as I was not at home but the owner left a business card. When I called the company on 4/19, I talked with the owner in general terms and the owner returned to look over the driveway on 4/21 and the estimate arrived by email later that day. During the visit, he and I discussed the wall repair in detail and he described that he would re-level the blocks and pin them with heavy (#5) re-bar driven into the ground so they would not lean again. We even slid off the heavy cap block to inspect the decorative block layer below and found that there was no hole in those blocks. He said he would drill a hole in those blocks to drive the heavy re-bar through. He provided one written bid for the driveway work and a separate bid for this wall work which captured the leveling, drilling and pinning approach in writing. We both agreed that first the old drive had to come out, then the wall was to be leveled, straightened and pinned before the new pavement was put down and rolled flat. Because my wife and I had a scheduled vacation that prevented starting the job as soon as the company could do the work, we agreed that after the vacation, I would call and schedule the job which I did on 5/15/17. The female I spoke with and I agreed that Tuesday 5/23 would be the job date and I mailed a $4,000 check as a deposit. Monday the 22nd was rainy on and off, as was Tuesday, the job day, but no crew showed up and I got no call. Weds was a bit rainy but I did not think so much that pavement work could not be done but I did not call the company thinking they were just not working due to weather and again, because of low expectations, I thought they assumed I knew they would not be working and did not bother to call me. On Thursday morning, 5/25 they called and inquired when I wanted to schedule my driveway work? The condensed version of this conversation is, when they could explain why they did not do the job on Tuesday, 5/23, we could discuss "scheduling" the job. The owner called soon after this and pretty much explained a personal issue related to the company had turned the first of the week upside down and my job slipped through the cracks. He could do my driveway tomorrow, Friday. My wife and I tried to put off the job until after the Memorial Day Weekend, partly because of the weather forecast for Friday calling for mid-day or afternoon rain and being unsure the job could be done in one day. We were also concerned of a rush job, but the owner assured us he would be done by 2pm, well before the rain and he had nearly a double crew to work on it. Based on his assurances we relented on the condition he show up at 7am vs. his declared 7:30 arrival so as to get a head start on the job and he agreed. They arrived at 8am to start the job. The work progressed well until 10 or 11 am, when he showed me what they were doing with the wall. His workers were simply prying up the lowest retaining wall block and stuffing pieces of the old asphalt between them and the ground to level the wall. He said, "it is better than it was" and it was, but it was still uneven, not even close to my expectations and how long would this approach last until the wall needed work again? When I pointed out that not only was that not what we had discussed, but that it did not seem to be a long term solution, especially where the ground along part of the wall was often damp, not to mention that it was not what he had written on the bid. He stated that he determined that 1) he could not drill the holes for the pinning rods without breaking the blocks and that 2) he had underestimated the complexity of the wall restoration. I don't know when he made this determination. At that point, the drive was nearly stripped of the old asphalt and he knew he had a truck load of hot asphalt on the way and others soon to follow but did not really provide any alternatives to the situation. While I did not realize the asphalt was in route to my house, I did understand that for this wall to be properly straightened and aligned, the new asphalt could not be applied and that my options were few if any. As I was furious over this turn of events I calmly expressed my thoughts but not much else as I needed to think through what options might be available, since he was not offering any. He called some contractor friends that might be able to provide some input and he left to buy fuel for the multiple machines on the job but would return soon. In his absence, a large truck full of hot asphalt arrived in front of my house. I told the truck driver that there would not be any asphalt laid until the owner returned and he and I solved the wall problem. The owner soon returned but still provided no solutions to the problem. My suggestion of stopping the job until he could have the wall properly repaired would inflict a large financial hardship on him, he said, as the asphalt supplier would not take the material back and he had a huge quantity purchased. My suggestion of paving part of the drive away from the wall, properly fixing the wall and having him return to finish the paving would not work, 1) due to a smaller yet real financial asphalt return hardship and 2)the poor seam between the cold asphalt and the hot asphalt applied later was not a good option in his opinion either. So, no real options from the owner for fixing the wall per the bid or in any manner that would meet my expectations, huge load of hot asphalt in the street, asphalt supplier not open on Memorial Day Weekend, rain coming possibly before the job was done, driveway torn out and 7 or 8 workers in standby and my $4,000 deposit check had already been cashed. Can you say, "Between a Rock and a Hard Place"? I am not happy with the decision I faced, but this is what we did. The owner agreed to have the crew do a better job of leveling the wall to vertical and so the tops of the blocks matched. This took 4 men about 20-30 minutes, he agreed to forfeit the $450 fee for that work and the driveway paving continued. The last 20-30 feet of the paving was finished at about 4pm, two hours after the estimated completion time, first in a sprinkle of rain and then a steady light rain. Steam literally rose in a thick cloud as the rain cooled the last section of new pavement. The driveway looks good. The wall looks better than it did, but not even close to my expectations. The tops of many blocks are uneven and the wall still has gradual dips and rises. Plus, the question remains, how long will it be "better than it was" and what options do I have if the wall leans in a year or two and what might those options cost? To his credit, during the negotiations over the wall situation, the owner never raised his voice, was never belligerent, intimidating or threatening, never even showed frustration or anger. After thinking about the whole situation for a day or so, I have formed several opinions: 1. The owner, intentionally or not, overestimated his ability to repair the wall 2. The owner, intentionally or not, jeopardized the quality of the overall project to keep the job(instead of telling me he could not do the wall work as bid and let me seek other options) 3. The owner, intentionally or not, jeopardized the quality of the overall job to get the job done on his schedule, not mine. 4. I bear some of the responsibility in trusting his drill and pin approach at roughly half the price of another contractor's bid at $1000 which involved removing the all the blocks, creating a new tamped and leveled gravel base and re-installing the blocks. Another part I am responsible for is assuming 1 800 ASPHALT would repair the wall as above, then pin the blocks. The wording of the bid caused me to believe that to be true but in hindsight I should have insisted the wording be specific. I would gladly have paid $1000 for the wall job being done this way but the $4000 more for the paving by that contractor proved to be an instant deal breaker. 5. My negotiating to remove the $450 fee for the wall work may have greatly weakened my ability to hold the company responsible if the wall returns to a leaning uneven mess within an unacceptable period of time. How could I hold them to a warranty if I did not pay for the work? My advice for ANY job you want done: Get multiple bids in writing Do your homework on how the job should be done AND how you WANT it done and make sure the bid reflects that Make sure the terms, conditions and guarantee of the proposal you are given includes all the work you are having done. Once the bids are in, negotiate the prices before choosing one Don't get in a hurry and don't let the contractor hurry you. Expect the unexpected when the work starts.

    I was contacted within 24 hours to set up an appointment for an estimate. We set up a meeting time. He showed up early and gave me the quote and a projected time he could do the work. I called him back to agree to the price. He thought they could get to it the end of the following week. Because of the rain it was postponed to the following week. The office communicated the change to me. The job was finished in a half of a day. I was not home but everything was communicated to my adult son. He returned that evening to ask if my husband or I had any questions or concerns.

    Excellent job.  They provided an estimate within a couple business days and had them scheduled to come out in mid-late Spring I believe.  Unfortuantely, we had a very rainy Spring which put them behind schedule and they couldn't meet the original scheduled date.   Well, with all the craziness of summer, we forgot about the driveway.  They called back in July to reschedule and they came out did a fantastic job at $20 less than other companies.

    Called and asked for an estimate to have driveway redone. Did not get a call back so I called again. Office receptionist said she would have him call me. I told her I had already called once and had not had a return call. So now after day 7 and day 2 of no return call I will take my business elsewhere. Beginning to wonder how much I can trust reviews. Everyone can be busy but not for 7 days. At least have office manager call and say look we are really backed so, it may take a few weeks to get out to you.

    Overall I had a good experience using Willis. I had gotten 3 individual estimates. Willis was one of the 2 companies that arrived that gave me a written estimate. They thoroughly described what they would be doing, gave me the depth of the asphalt they would be putting down, gave me total square feet of the driveway, price for foot, etc.
    The only hold up was due to Willis being busy and did not start the job when originally planned.
    Once the job was done they put stakes and rope across driveway when done. They told me how long I needed to let the asphalt set before driving on it. They did a great job. I was totally satisfied. I plan on calling and getting a quote for sealing the asphalt this year.

    We were extremely happy with the service we received. The owner is very personable, easy to work with, is very knowledgeable about his work. In addition to doing a great job, he promptly responded to our request which is most important when I hire someone. I would recommend his work to anyone. I didn't know until I got his card that he does a number of other things like concrete repair, so I am now considering having some concrete work done. He also does commercial work so I appreciate knowing he's available to take care of residential needs.

He sent the estimate and we called back, had the work done the next week. The workers arrived on time, worked quickly and cleaned up well. Roman came back that evening and cheked the work.
