  • Nick did a fantastic job on our retirement home in Galena Illinois. I was the general contractor and had the homes shell erected by a local contractor. Nick and I took on the job of finishing the entire interior. We worked on the 3120 sq ft for about 5 months as this is a larger home with 3 bd and 3.5 baths. Nick;s ability to handle all aspects of the interior construction was an immense plus. From plumbing, electric to all the doors, kitchen and bath cabinets etc. he did a GREAT job. His special skill at finished carpentry, trim and his attention to detail were AMAZING. Photos are available at shutterfly.com - email - ornar@comcast.net pwd-gtsgts. Sign on so you can see pictures of all the oak! I had Nick return to finish the garage interior, finish under the deck and add a railing since the original work. 10 stars!!! My highest recommendation!! You will be extremely happy with the finished product. If went so well in fact that I also had Nick do a complete remodel of my older rental home before putting it on the market. I would not normally do this but in this case - here is my phone number - give me a call if you want to discuss the work done in greater detail than I can add here. Russ - (847) 891 7154

  • This is an update to my previous review since this bathroom remodel is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Since the door handle was installed incorrectly it subsequently broke. I tried to take it off to replace it but the screws I'm the handle had been torqued down to such a degree I had to have someone come and cut the handle off to get the mechanism out of the door. Which is ridiculous. Who installs a door handle that can never be removed???? Also because Jeff reused and left original construction in as much as possible in order to have as high a profit as possible I now have a hole in my bathroom floor and hallway ceiling. There was a drum trap by the toilet. I wanted it removed so the floor could be completely tiled. And he told me it could not be. Well that was a lie. He should have installed a P-trap and also replaced the old galvanized drain pipe while he had access. But he didn't. He left the obsolete drum trap that was over 50 years old that people do not use anymore and he left the old galvanized pipe as well even though pvc pipe is relatively inexpensive and would not have cost much. 4 days ago my bathtub started draining through my hallway celing instead of down the drain because the drum trap stopped working and started overflowing. I had to cut out a large portion of my ceiling and now I have a hole in my bathroom floor that I need to buy tile for and have someone in to put in. All this is going to cost me nearly 1000 dollars. All because Jeff Downs either does not know what he is doing or because he was too cheap to buy the pvc piping and P-trap that should have been installed in the remodel.

  • The work completed wasn't very good so I asked them to come back to make corrections. After their "corrections," the work was much worse and seemingly intentionally bad! Not only can they not paint a straight line, they also damaged my gutters and paint was on windows and screens. Check out the photos on this website for examples: pix.sfly.com/xrS3tWq0

  • Flawlessly. I was very happy with the finished product and workmanship is great. It came in at a very reasonable price. Since it was so unconventional I just asked for time and material charge. It turned out less than I figured based on other gutter work I had done from a different contractor (whom by the way never showed up to look at the job).

  • The work done on my bathroom in August of 2015 is degrading at a rapid pace. Grout is cracking and in some places coming off in chunks. I had my bathroom remodeled in August of 2015. I supplied the toilet, tub, fixtures, sink, vanity, wall light fixture and two boxes of the floor tile. Downs Home Improvement provided the vent fan, subway tile, concrete board, drywall, plaster, paint, and installation materials. I have many issues. The work was done poorly and I am not satisfied with the end result. My main issue is the grout is cracking and coming off in chunks in various parts of the bathroom. As well the crown molding is pulling away from the ceiling and the paint is cracked. Also the drywall tape is pulling up at one corner and as well you can clearly see the tape grid lines as not enough plaster was applied over the tape. As well in another corner the paint is cracking because it does not look like any drywall tape was used. An old outlet and an old light switch (that has a cracked plastic side so that's how I recognize it) were reused instead of providing new, paint was applied over wood putty and the putty wasn't sanded, a door knob and lock were installed and it wasn't drilled out so that the lock could function, the molding over the window does not meet the wall and the caulk applied in there dripped partially out and was not painted so it looks extremely sloppy, there was a hole by the light fixture and when I had them come back to patch it the patch is clearly visible with the paint not quite matching. The door did not open all the way and so he came back and cut off some of the bottom and the cut is so bad and sloppy it looks like it were done with an axe. The tile alcove in the shower is visibly not level. The shower head, faucet, handle, drain don't line up at all. Painting is done very poorly , it does not look like painters tape was used during painting to get clean lines. New light switches are not level which is very visible. I paid a total of 6424.49 to Downs Home Improvement. The work was supposed to take approximately 6-8 days and it actually took about 3 weeks. I had him come back a couple of times for issues but they were only partially addressed. He has been back once about the grout cracking but his solution was to use caulk instead of addressing the problem of the grout cracking. He started work 8/3/2015 and it wasn't done until near the end of August. I paid the balance not because I was satisfied with the work, I paid the balance because I felt pressured to do so despite being dissatisfied. I have pictures of the problem areas and I have sent an email previously about many of these issues and I feel they were not properly addressed. Also I would like to point out that I paid Downs Home Improvement almost 6500 but since I supplied the tub, sink, toilet, fixtures, 3 boxes of floor tile, and had to bring in separate plumbers since he was unable to do the plumbing on my antique sink correctly I spent about 3500 in addition to what was paid to Downs.

  • Called ahead to schedule exact arrival time. They had 3 workers and all were very polite and professional finished job in a timely fashion. Cleaned up after they were done. Explained everything and showed us how to work the sump pump.

  • Rob was great! He was very nice and informative. He gave me details on another service & estimated the cost on site. Would totally recommend! On the way out, he even cleaned our outdoor mat without charge.

  • Two workers arrived promptly.  They pruned a pussywillow tree and a crabapple tree.
Then they removed an old lilac shrub and a red twig dogwood shrub.
The work was done professionally and was minimally invasive to the surrounding plantings - don't know how they
managed to not stomp all over everything!
The trees look so beautiful and healthy now and the spaces where the shrubs were are ready for
    spring planting.
So glad I called Crosstown Tree Service.

  • Estimated came out in the time frame suggested and promptly e-mailed our estimates.
We haven't committed to the work yet as there are a few other to-dos ahead of carpeting on our list.
We plan on getting the work done later this year.

  • However, the most impressive part of the move involved our houseplants. We had many (25) large houseplants with some being 5 feet high and taller. They moved all plants in a separate truck. Everything lived though we knew it was our risk. Some movers would not touch them. I would use them again but another move is not going to happen for quite some time.
