Does a Painting Estimate Really Matter?

House Painting reviews in Des Plaines

    The ABL Group
We are thoroughly happy with the quality of their work and recommend ABL Group for painting and handyman work. We hired ABL Group because it was highly rated by Angie List members, has verifiable workers and liability insurance, an up-to-date verifiable EPA lead paint certification (checked at [*** Link removed ***] 5 year warranty (labor and materials), and a good price. We received estimates from 5 companies. Our ranch style home was built in 1962 so it was important that we hire a painting company with EPA lead paint certification. In my presence ABL tested each room to be painted for lead, thankfully none were found. We expected above average preparation of the walls and ceilings (according to another companys estimator, our expectation was above average), repairing many wall and ceiling cracks and blemishes, patching unused picture and curtain rod holes. Howard Lipsky, the owner, came to our home to give an estimate. He was friendly, knowledgeable, listened to our requirements, and made suggestions. We gave him a printed list of our requirements. Im a retired computer programmer and very detail oriented. His proposal was the most detailed of the 5 companies proposals we received. ABL willingly added additional information to the proposal to clarify and add omissions. We knew exactly what we would get when we signed the proposal. Before the project began, Howard visited again to give us a complimentary color consultation, suggesting paint types, sheens and colors for the rooms and shed. Inside the house, workers prepared the walls and ceilings, protecting the floors, furniture, cabinets with plastic tarps and cloths, removing electric outlet and light switch plates, scraping loose paint, repairing cracks and holes, caulking, applying primer over bare surfaces, cleaning areas daily. At the end of each day I checked prep work, pointing out issues that they happily corrected the next day. They applied two coats of Benjamin Moore Regal paint, allowing the first coat time to dry before painting the second coat. After painting was done, they caulked top of backsplashes in bathrooms and kitchen. A worker lightly sanded front door and applied 3 coats of Zar Ultra stain. Again, they fixed any concern I had about a specific area, e.g. applying third coat of stain to front door to achieve uniform appearance. We thought that the workers supervision, provided by Billy, project supervisor, and Balentine, foreman, was good, Billy checking in daily. Both men listened to and satisfied our concerns and answered our questions. The workers came early, worked hard and put in a full day of work in order to meet the schedule in the proposal. Pleased with the painting project in progress, we entered into another contract with ABL for the family room, fixing water leak damage to one wood paneled wall and adjoining ceiling. ABL took off wood paneling, removed all plaster on the wall, plastered wall, patched ceiling, applied coat of primer paint, and painted 2 Benjamin Moore coats on all walls and ceiling. In the backyard, workers worked on the shed, replacing rotten wood trim on the outer sides, replacing one door, prepping the surface, adding new wood trim boards around bottom of all sides, painting primer on new wood, applying 2 coats of Benjamin Moore paint. On the last day of the project I was impressed that Billy, the project supervisor, told us not to hesitate to contact him to fix any painting imperfections that we may discover later. A few weeks later I called Billy to send someone to take care of some issues. The touchup work was done expertly, the small repainted areas blending invisibly with the surrounding painted wall. We can attest that ABL lives up to its warranty. About 3 months after the project was over, some hairline cracks appeared. I called ABL and within days a worker came to fix the problem to our satisfaction.

    Tom The Painter
We have hired Tom for this job and that of painting our fence before so we did not hesitate to contact him again for our deck and porch restaining. Tom came out before staining day to powerwash the deck and porch and to prep the surfaces. His crew was here for several hours. Without asking, Tom's crew made minor repairs to our railing where it had pulled away from other railings, and where a piece of wood had cracked. We greatly appreciated that. Tom also brought out staining chips that matched the color of our fence, which is now a reddish composite fence. We decided to go with the previous redwood colored stain as we didn't like the new stain options. He used a different product than our last product, which held up for six years like a champ. On staining day, Tom and his crew arrived on time and quickly got to work. When they finished, everything looked fantastic. I did call Tom out later to ask about how the stain didn't appear to have taken everywhere, and he came out to look. He assured me the stain had taken, and because of the nature of the stain and how they power washed down to the bare wood, that was the correct look. He was willing to restain the spots again but added that the stain was not designed for another application and that it might peel. I accepted his professional assessment and decided to leave the stain as is. Our deck and porch look fantastic. No mess remained behind.

    CertaPro Painters of Des Plaines
The painting crew was great - provided high quality work and cleaned up after themselves. The office staff was so easy to work with and were very responsive to my questions. Project went well, came in on budget and I would use CertaPro again.

Keith and his crew are exceptional. Instead of the typical one day power wash + one day stain, they spent over a weeks worth carefully preparing the deck also went to the trouble of adding wire mesh to the bottom sections of the deck to ensure animals do not get in. He also completed the cleaning/staining of my 2nd story deck. His paint application is hand brushed so the oil/stain penetrates deep into the fibers. I have high hopes this will carry me over for several seasons. Also did a few interior paint patches where i installed new thermostats. He went through the collection of miss-labeled paint to find the correct can to repair. Looks great now. Super friendly guy who knows his stuff and his results show. He takes his time to make sure things are done correctly as well. Very easy to get a hold of and is ultra dependable.

    Weshorn Design & Construction
Well it turned out my wood was only rotted in a small section. However, Weshorn did scrape, prime and paint all damaged areas. The only complaint I had was I misinterpreted the quote, not realizing the price was for TWO workers. I agreed on the price based on thinking one person, so I was quite shocked at the final cost. Shame on me for not realizing this but I think it should have been noted that the price would double based on the fact of two workers.

    Dan Monckton Inc
They did a great job! Kevin, the foreman, really went above & beyond expectations. Dan found ways save us money by repairing and repainting shutters that we would have otherwise replaced. Gave us a lot of help picking colors and didn't complain when we changed our choices at a very late point. Dan's estimate was significantly less that other quotes and the final invoice was several hundred dollars under the quote!

    Supreme Painting & Restoration
I had Supreme Painting re-paint a living room, foyer, kitchen and a bedroom.  In addition they also repaired some drywall work in my kitchen ceiling as well as painted all my base boards.    They did an incredible job.   Their lines were all very good and clean.   His crew is also very professional and courteous.    I'm already looking to hire him for my next job.   Highly recommend this company!

    Tom The Painter
They did A+ work, they were excellent.  I felt the price was very reasonable. We had to wait a week or two to get the work done but that was an acceptable amount of time. We would be delighted to work with them again.

    Bruce Wild Painting
Bruce Wild came out right away to give me a price to paint the wooden balcony on my condo. Most of the old paint was peeling or gone leaving a gray, splintery mess. Some of the knots had popped out so there were holes in some boards. Bruce recommended an excellent product that would weather the cold Wisconsin winters. He came Wednesday morning at 7:30 am and accommodated my daughter's schedule.  He got right to work, filling the holes, sanding the wood and then applied two coats of paint on the balcony. He was done by 4:30 pm. The balcony underneath ours was left in great condition. The living room where he needed to go through to access the balcony was left in clean condition. I have no complaints about his work. The balcony looks beautiful and the wood is smooth for bare feet to walk on. Thank Bruce.
