Transmission Service reviews in West Des Moines

    Knudson Transmission Service
I recently bought a 2008 Chevy Equinox, prior salvage. The transmission didn't shift properly when it was cold. I called several establishments about the problem. I was expecting a major overhaul of the transmission, possibly several thousand dollars. I was absolutely floored when the owner of Knudson Transmission told me all I had to do was flush and replace the transmission fluid. I was totally expecting the worst case. He saved me a lot of money. The honesty of the owner of Knudson Transmission is really appreciated. He has truly won a customer for life. And I definitely encourage other users of Angie's List to use Knudson Transmission. It's a family owner business that has been in business since 1951. I'm a very happy camper.

When I make an appointment I wait all day till they perform the service.  I get there at my point of time and they get me in. They get the work done quickly.  I would use them again in the future.

    Shade Tree Auto
I'd never used Shade Tree before. Clint was recommended to me by a coworker. Since it was close to work, I stopped at the shop over lunch without calling ahead. The front desk displayed a very prominent sign saying there would be a $65 diagnostic charge for any repair work. Matt and Clint explained that this was a flat charge covering the diagnosis of the complaint (malfunctioning transmission in my case) plus checking for other potential problems or maintenance needs. I briefly described my transmission problem and asked what it sounded like. They said it could be a broken or bent linkage, but I'd have to leave it or bring it back and pay the diagnostic charge. I said I'd think about it. As I was leaving, they asked if I needed a push back out of the parking space. Nice guys! And frankly, I was impressed that they immediately made that connection from my original brief mention of not having the reverse gear. When they came out to the car, I guess Clint figured he might as well take a minute to see/feel first hand what was going on. Within two minutes, he had opened the hood and found the detached bracket. At the time, he thought the shifter cable had broken and that's what allowed the bracket to come loose. So they called me that afternoon with an estimate of $338 to replace the shifter cables, including a $32 diagnostic charge. After I dropped off the car a few days later (had to wait for parts), Clint called and said they discovered the cables (the aforementioned parts ;-))were fine and they were able to just weld the two parts of the bracket together, saving me $188. When I picked up the car, Clint didn't mention any other problems or recommendations. When I asked, he said there was nothing obvious and they test drove the car and it was running great. Clint and Matt were very nice and seemed very competent and honest. Based on this first experience with them, I would not expect the stereotypical "hard-sell"/"up-sell"/scare tactics that you get at so many shops. I based my "B" grade for price on this repair plus an estimate I requested for replacing the timing belt. The facility, including what I could see of the shop, was very clean with a comfortable, well-lit waiting area.
