    Astec Handyman Services
Good. There were some unexpected issues due to the door being too narrow for the slide track which was my fault but they were able to install it by getting different size screws. This doubled the price that I was quoted but they did a good job. It slides beautifully.

    Chris's Handyman Services
Chris interviews very well.  Was excited to get projects done around the house.  Doesn't hire competent workers.  Have had a door replaced.  Paid for it on 10/26/2014, took two weeks for them to get started on replacement.  It is now 1/6/2015 and it still isn't done.  Have had people here to "look" at it numerous times.  Has promised multiple discounts, but I just want it done.  *To be fair, Chris did injure his back and was laid up, but since he subs the work out......

    Standard Drywall

Very poor work.  They just wanted the money.  You can see drywall seams.  Carpet is lumpy and wavy (they did bring in another person to install carpet), the guy knew it was lumpy because he stated the lumps would go away but they haven't.  Glue on tile and texture on tub in basement (they supposedly removed this).  I also have texture/paint on light fixtures.  Basement bathroom door won't close and knob not set in.  Door to laundry area not centered and knob not set in.  Paint - areas very blotchy on left wall going to basement, another area no paint on entryway to bathroom.  I have to repaint all of it because they left no extra paint.  Door to basement not washed clean, can see white residue on bottom half (they supposedly washed this).

Doors - they did not get permit for 2 exterior doors, door jamb extension wasn't put in, you can see plaster.  Door doesn't latch properly half the time or won't open when closed.  2 storm doors don't close properly.  One storm fell on ground and other banged into railing from wind because they didn't finish installing latch and hinge for 3 weeks.

Refinished wood floor - started coming up immediately, they didn't do it properly but are trying to blame it on paper they put on floor when painting walls and ceiling.  They should have painted first.  I asked them how long before you can put anything on floor and was told 3 days.  They gave me the impression they would redo floor this spring.

Paint - ceiling and walls have streaks.   No extra paint to fix this so will have to repaint entire walls.  They are trying to say it was like that before.  I have pictures before they did any work and no streaks are on walls or ceiling.

This couple advertises in the Insider service directory.

I stop payment on last check written to them because they did not come back to finish work as he had stated he would. Instead they went to a lawyer and threatened to file fraud charges against me and demanded their money.  I had to send a certified check to the attorney.  I am now having to hire other people to fix everything and it will cost me thousands more.  They added on to basement bid without my approval.   I did agree to addition for a door to laundry area because city inspector said we had to put one in.  I had health issue because they did not keep upstairs free of dust while remodeling basement as agreed upon.  Twice I had to leave home and stay elsewhere because they didn't ventilate area which they should have warned me about.  I came home once to find someone in my basement besides them, which scared me, he calls afterwards stating he dropped a guy off.
I was lead to believe they had years of experience and did the work themselves.  I don't know who actually did work in June because I didn't live in home at the time.  I was living in home for basement and realized they had many other people involved.

I am posting pictures so you can see for yourself the poor quality work they do.

    Goodwin Construction
They were very professional, considerate, and went out of their way to make everything go as smoothly as possible. They also stayed past working hours to finish up the job. I am having them back to do more projects.

    Pella Windows and Doors
It was great and it turned out good. They were really professional and they estimated the time correctly. It took them just as long as they said it would to finish the job. The final cost was what they quoted me. I would recommend them to others. When I ordered the windows they explained everything very well, and went over the different options with me. The price matched the quality of the product.

    Pella Windows and Doors
My first clue that this was not the place to do business with was when I was talking with one of the salespeople about my project, a couple came in complaining about a bad installation. The windows they'd had installed were not opening easily, some of them taking a good deal of effort to open and close, and they were not pleased with that, obviously. Another salesperson talked to them but I could overhear the conversation, and that salesperson agreed to have someone come out and take a look at it. Being optimistic, it sounded to me like good customer service at the time, so I took that as a positive. Keep this in mind, we'll come back to something like this later.
After ordering my two doors, we set up a time to have the installers come out and do their job, and despite the price, it was about $3500 installed for a standard sized sliding fiberglass patio door and a steel front door without a window or any fancy features, things were going well. Pella products and services are expensive! So the day comes when the installers arrive, and I start asking them questions about what they're going to do, and I get concerned when their plan for "weatherproofing" the patio door consisted of only expandable foam in the gaps and caulk around the trim. Having seen many situations myself with rotten frames around patio doors due to this weatherproofing approach, this didn't seem like enough to me. I asked him about building a sill pan or at least using the fancy flashing tape that Pella makes, and he laughed at me! He had never heard of a sill pan and didn't think it was necessary when I described it to him. What a joke! These installers were no better than an ignorant home owner, and for Pella prices? No thanks, not ever again. Granted, I should have asked about the sill pan much earlier on, or demanded more detailed installation answers, and decided to take my business elsewhere. The installer did entertain me by putting some flashing tape down between the vertical and horizontal parts of the door frame on the bottom, a minimal effort at achieving my weatherproofing request. It also took them four tries to ship in a screen door that wasn't damaged in shipping. At least they were willing to keep trying to order another screen, but there was no priority put on getting one faster for me, and I had to wait 2-3 weeks for another damaged one every time.
Do a Google search for "door sill pan" and see how to prevent a rotten frame around your door, and see what at least one Cedar Falls Pella Store installer has no idea that it exists.
So after all this, I should mention that the patio door shuts hard, always has, and I think the only solution for that is a new patio door or redo the installation because the same idiot installer shimmed the door in so hard that the track is bowed outward, and takes more effort than necessary to shut it. Remember the first paragraph here again?
One more impressive thing the installer did: since my house has vinyl siding, a J channel borders the door trim. The door trim from Pella was about 1/8" wider than the previous trim I had, and instead of taking the time to move the J channel slightly and trim the siding in the process, the installer just crammed the trim in there, and now my J channel is stressed and curling outward. Real attention to detail and doing things correct there.
Although this Pella Store is an area Parade of Homes contractor, I recommend finding another place in Waterloo/Cedar Falls to do your windows and doors. Unless you want to pay a lot of money for good service, terrible installation, and ok products.

    Frink's Remodeling
This was actually the 2nd time that we employed Mr. Frink's services. It's a long story, but we got a new front door and storm door last year. Last spring, a bracket broke on the storm door, and ended up cracking our door jamb. We returned to the place we purchased the door (Home Depot) but got very little help in finding someone who could fix help fix the door. They couldn't (or wouldn't) help us figure out how to replace just that one piece of the door frame, and wanted to sell us another brand new door, and would have charged another installation fee!
Fortunately, we finally learned of Mr. Frink. He was able to remove the damaged side of the door jamb, inexpensively replacing it with a salvaged jamb. He corrected a few other problems with the door installation that we hadn't even known existed (Home Depot's installer failed to put any insulation behind or around the door frame, and apparently hadn't fastened it in as well as he should have). Mr. Frink charged $175 for that job.
He was unable to re-install the storm door that day, because we had to order some parts, but he came back and got that installed for us once we had them. We really appreciate his services, because we were having trouble locating someone to take on such a small job.  He did a great job, and we will use his services again as other things come up.

Bartlett Construction was able to work on our garage in between some of their other big jobs.  They were great on getting the project complete in a timely manner and kept up on the clean-up so the yard always looked nice.
