    Dr Shires is pleasant, listens, works to find solutions, offers doctors he feels are high quality for advanced procedures and will perform minor surgeries with a high degree of competence. As long as he is working, I will go to him for my medical consultations.

    My mother saw him for a period of two and a half years. We saw him until February of 2013. I would recommend his bedside manner and his empathy as well as his concern for the patient. He has the knowledge and the experience. They're just great.

    There are okay but we have a few problems with scheduling and monitoring some blood levels on things that I'm going through. They get competitive when I try to get them work with another clinic yet sometimes I need them to work together. I don't know why that is. They don't do anything that they don't have to do.

    Nothing in particular stands out. It is not the best. I am stuck with them because I am receiving allergy injections so I have to continue to use them; they own the rights to a specific formula that I have been using. I have to use these injections for five years. I am a nurse and I am totally aware of how to prevent physicians from just taking money. One of the biggest ways is for recommendation for an over the counter allergy medication or recommendation for a prescribed allergy medication because of some basic systems, nothing that needs to be seen in an office setting. I have to visit the office once a year. At one point of time I visited the physician three weeks earlier and I started to have some more hay fever like symptoms, allergy shots can also cause these issues, they were minor and I have some issues with some over the counter medications so I requested if they would consider calling in and prescribe medications, that may not cost so much, or give recommendations over the phone and just contact and talk to me. They said they would talk to the physician but I did not hear back and then I called later and they said the physician will get back with me but I did not hear back. Then I called another time and they said the same thing but they completely ignored my problem. They do not work with me over the phone; I have to always get in there. I am not going to contact them for anything allergy related, except for my allergy shot. I will contact my primary care physician. I do not think the care or are willing to change.

    Met with Heidi Close who, after tests, was able to diagnose my lump as a blocked saliva gland. The tests also revealed a huge lump in my thyroid. Dr. Close and Dr. Wright operated and removed first the saliva gland lump and then on another surgery removed half my thyroid. They did an excellent job on both surgeries. After my thyroid surgery Dr. Close did the standard thyroid tests that showed I was just under the accepted levels. Dr. Close said I was fine but I felt extremely tired and knew this wasn't accurate. I was a bit disappointed that she didn't listen to how I was feeling but instead simply looked at the test and said I was fine. I then went to my hormonal specialist who properly diagnosed and treated my thyroid levels. I now feel great and am lump free.

    When I took my children to the Iowa Clinic Pediatrics department, I asked the doctor for a referral for a doctor for myself. She suggested Kathleen Jones if I wanted a female, and Dr. Palagumi if I wanted a male. I looked at online reviews and chose Dr. Kathleen Jones. I liked that she could combine my physical and pap in one visit. She has an excellent bedside manner and has a great nurse. I have a chronic medical condition and she was more knowledgeable than other general practitioners have been on the subject. I am impressed with the Iowa Clinic overall. The WDM facility is new and they have updated technology (iPads to check-in). It is a bigger building so if walking from a parking lot and navigating a larger building is a problem, you may want to find a doctor in a smaller facility.

    Dr. Ruisch did thorough exam and ordered Xrays. Set out the options available to me and let me make an informed decision on how to proceed. Physical therapy was ordered and after 6 weeks my knee was as good as ever.

    The Fitting Place
    If you aren't aware, when you buy shoes under an insurance plan, the provider from whom you purchase the shoes must take assignment of the cost of the shoes. This means, as part of the insurance provider network, the provider has agreed to accept a specific amount for a given service, in this case, fitting and dispensing AFO compatible shoes. In Iowa, the assignment for AFO compatible shoes is approximately $140. 
    This means that, again in this case, The Fitting Place will only be paid approximately $140, at most, to fit and dispense a pair of shoes. So, if the pair of shoes you want to buy is greater than the negotiated assignment, the provider (Fitting Place) normally must absorb the cost of the shoes above the negotiated $140. Keep in mind that these shoes will be classified as "Durable Medical Equipment" by your insurance company.
    The proprietor at The Fitting Place explained this to me, and told me that he would not consider selling me a shoe I wanted because the difference between the cost to him and the insurance assignment was too great. He also informed me that there was no process by which I could agree to pay the difference between the cost and assignment as he would lose his in-network provider status. 
    Finally, The Fitting Place also refused to provide to me a pair of shoes clearly indicated for AFO use by the manufacturer, and which was included in the manufacturer catalog he provided, for the reason that he had not previously fitted this particular shoe before.
    I ended up buying two pair of shoes from him that I needed and that happened to be in the $140 neighborhood. I was still in need of a couple of other pair of shoes, however, as I indicated above, The Fitting Place expressly refused to provide the service I was requesting, which, of course, is their prerogative. 
    I have since gone to another provider, who I will review separately, and have discovered that indeed, the insurance company does provide a procedure to allow the client to pay the difference between the negotiated assignment and the cost of the durable medical equipment provided, without fear of a provider being dropped from the network. I am being fit for these other shoes at the other provider.
    I cannot recommend The Fitting Place for buying shoes, whether under insurance or out-of-pocket. This provider will only work with you as long as you choose the shoes they want you to buy, and as long as they don?t create additional work for them to fit. Furthermore, my experience indicates that this provider does not properly understand insurance billing and reimbursement. Not a positive experience for me.

Provided clear and concise answers. Lab people were friendly and efficient. Follow up phone call with lab results was timely and efficient.
