Fence Company reviews in Urbandale

We purchased a steel rod iron fence for our back yard.  I opted for the property line survey, insurance for sprinklers and opted for the rush service.  It was at the end of the year so we were rushing to get the fence in before the ground froze and they did make that happen.  During installation they cut our neighbors invisible fence (as well as ours).  AFC did not cover any of these repairs, I had to pay all our of pocket.  They made a few small mistakes with one of the gates that needed to get resolved in the spring.

We found out in the spring that they broke one of our neighbors sprinkler heads (how they didn't see that a sprinkler head was there I don't know), and they ruptured a sprinkler line.  I tried contacting the AFC but didn't hear back from AFC directly.  10 days later some other sprinkler company called me to say they would be in my area, but by then my neighbor became impatient and hired someone else to do the repairs.  I offered to pay for it thinking AFC would make it right given I paid for insurance.  Learned my lesson, AFC did not make it right and stuck me with the bill saying they have their own repair service and wouldn't cover any of my costs.

In all I spent just over $500 in additional repairs caused by AFC.  On top of it all, in less then 6 months the fence is showing rust on all of the hinges and along a lot of the bolts.  I question the quality of the material used.  I don't recommend using AFC.

    Good Neighbor Fencing
Carl showed up to give the estimate when he said he would.  Came back and performed the work exactly as promised.  Great job.  Quick, neat and great work.  Had to call him in June because a deer had tried to jump the fence and broken some of the fasteners at the top.  He came back within a week of my call and fixed it at no charge!  Would highly recommend.

Alan pulled out a chain link, and installed a privacy fence along the street side of my house.  He
did what he said he was going to do, when he said he was going to do it,
for the price quoted.  I am happy with the fence and the service.  Good
    job Alan!!

    Des Moines Steel Fence

Job went very well.  Started job when they said they would, and finished within expected time span.  Good crew, very accessible, handled everything professionally, and property cleaned up when they finished. Price was lowest of four estimates, and was easy to get cost of any variation we asked for after initial estimate was provided.  Very easy to work with this company.  Neighbors and others spoke highly of this firm as well.

The weather cooperated and they were able to start earlier than quoted.  Excellent work and clean up.  The yard slopes down and the fence and extra wide gate are on the slope.  It looks perfect.  Lots of compliments from my neighbors on the fence.  Office employees are very knowledgeable and helpful through out the process.

    CertaPro Painters of Des Moines
I was really disappointed with CertaPro. The person that came out to do the estimate was prompt, friendly and professional. He really sold me on the fact that they were more expensive, but performed at a more professional level. Since this was the first time my fence was ever stained, which sets the tone for the life of the fence, I decided it would be worth the extra cash.
Unfortunately, the level of service was inferior to what I could have had a couple of high school kids do. The painter seemed confused about how to work his equipment, and accidentally sprayed stain all over my garage (which he did a good job of fixing with the extra paint I had). Despite that, my main disappointment was with the quality of the actual job. I was told that it would take 15 to 20 hours of painting?the painter was done in about 5, and it showed. It was very streaky and uneven. When I mentioned how streaky it looked, he told me thats how the stain goes on, but will dry quite evenly. It did not.
I've since looked into estimates to have it restrained?CertaPro certainly was not on the list of people I contacted.

We used Springer for annual carpet cleaning and the service has been great.  We decided to use their home services for staining our deck and fence, it did not go as well.  The price was $1,000 which was on the high side but we really appreciated the service and professionalism we had had from the carpet cleaners so we gave it a shot.   While the deck and fence do look good we did have a couple of issues.  There were a couple of large stain spots on the siding of our house that they had to have seen but did not take the time to clean up.  Also, they left an empty stain can behind our fence that our kids found.   It is the small things that set companies apart and unfortunately Springer did not meet our standards in this case.  Also, the gentlemen left an invoice with my wife so we could send in a check or call with a card number which we were planning on doing within in the week.  The next day the company called asking for a card number.  I understand a company needs to paid but calling with 24 hours of us having an invoice seems a little overboard.   We may give Springer another shot in the future because of the great service we have had before this experience but I hope they understand the importance of the little things. Maybe their home service should take some pointers from their carpet cleaning division.

I sought quotes from several Des Moines area fencing companies for approximately 250' of 6' chain link fence with one gate. I sent emails three times to American Fence, from two different computers, and didn't get any response. They have a nice looking website, and every day I drive by the black vinyl chain link they put up at the Urbandale football stadium, and it looks great. But they shouldn't bother having an email address on the "contact us" web page if they're not going to bother answering emails. I ended up going with another major Des Moines fencing company that *did* respond quickly and courteously to emails.

    Des Moines Steel Fence
I almost didn't call DM Steel Fence. I see their name all over town on big projects, and thought that they either wouldn't be interested or would be the high bid. That would have been a big mistake. They responded promptly to my email inquiry via their "get a free quote online" web page, and we scheduled an on-site estimate a few days later. I was very pleasantly surprised-- they were the least expensive for the black vinyl fencing of all the quotes I'd gotten, and average for galvanized. They were the same or lower for a surveyor referral had I required one, the same for the removal of the old fence, and just a few dollars more for a tension wire, had I had one installed.
They did have the longest lead time at six weeks, but that lead time *was* accurate. (In contrast, the other companies were running two to four weeks lead time, but since I didn't have them do the work, I don't know if that would have been accurate.) I wasn't in a hurry so saving several hundred dollars was a big plus.
They removed the old fence and set the new posts on one day, and finished the fence the next. It looks great! In retrospect, I wish I had gone with the tension wire. I was having the old fence replaced because I foster dogs, and my last foster could leap the 42" fence easily. While they did a good job keeping the bottom of the fence close to the ground and the yard is pretty level, the bottom of a 6' fence has more give because the top rail is so high. I'm remedying the give with some stakes and fill dirt, but if I'd have seen the amount of flex before they were finished I would have had them do the tension wire. I'd recommend it to homeowners in a similar situation.
I've debated for a couple weeks on this final bit: I'm docking them one star on professionalism because of the cigarette butt I found under the picnic table several days after the fence install. The evening after the final installation, my dog vomited several times during the evening, several more during the night, and a couple times the next day, which is very unlike her. My guess is that she ate a cigarette butt. I know they didn't purposely feed her a cigarette butt, and there's a chance that my dog's upset stomach had some other cause, but I wish they would have smoked in their vehicles or the street.

    Central Iowa Fencing LTD
Mark was very responsive. We exchanged several emails setting up a time for the estimate. (Unlike American Fence, who didn't bother to respond to three email requests for a quote.) He was punctual for the appointment, knowledgeable and professional. The quote was in the middle of the pack; his lead time was three weeks less than that of the company we went with. If we had been in a time crunch where the date was more important than the dollars, we would have gone with Central Iowa Fencing. I'd recommend getting a quote from Mark if you're planning on having fencing done.
