  • They do a great job. They charge $35 per application. I used them last year as well and I had apples that weighed almost a pound. I like that they are consistent and if they spot a problem on the tree, they let me know.

  • When they replaced the 2 windows in March it was on those -25 degree days. There must have been a small crack in the glass that grew the colder it got. Called them the next day. They happily ordered a replacement and installed it when it came in.

  • They have been very responsive and they seem to know what they are doing.  We contacted them through the manufacturer for high velocity air conditioning, that’s what we have and they are upgrading us.  We are very pleased with them.

  • They installed the windows on time and did a professional job.
I'm happy with the product and the installation. I would recommend them to anyone that is looking for replacement windows.

  • Even though the chimney had been cleaned a year ago, several weeks ago we nearly had a house fire due to a fire in the chimney. I called D C Chimney to come inspect and tell us what had happened and why it happened. They discovered the existence of a second, non standard flu in our fireplace which caused our nearly disastrous fire. They temporarily fixed it, and will return in warmer weather to do a permanent fix. Our previous chimney sweep never said a word about this second flu, never cleaned it, and we were very, very lucky not to lose the house.

  • The original bid was $14,000 to refinish 5,000 square feet of concrete floors. We started work on half the building, but he had me pay 50% down on the entire building. He told me to paint the walls before he did the floors so that I would not accidentally drip paint on the finished floors.
First he came in and poured a solvent on 50% of the floor in the room at our main entry, which turned the mastic into a tar-like slippery, sticky mess. Then he left the solvent on the floor for a month, so that we had to place boards on the walkways and work areas. For that month he did not return calls or emails. Finally, after many complaints, he came in and poured kitty litter-like granuals on the solvent to absorb it, and left the kitty litter for me to clean up.
When the solvent didn't work, he purchased a large commercial floor grinder with an attached commercial vac, then he charged me an extra $3,000 because the job was taking longer than he expected and his expenses were higher than expected. By this point we have now paid him $10,000. Apparently he had never used a floor grinder before. He spent more than an hour on the phone trying to figure out how to use it. Then he didn't attach the vacuum or wet the floor to control dust. Whe stopped by to check on his progress. The dust was so thick it rolled out of the doors like smoke and left piles of dust several inches thick outside the doors. We were shocked to see he wasn't wearing any kind of a respirator. We told him he should at least use one of our dust masks before he kills himself. His employee was smarter than he was, and brought his own respirator.
The dust storm continued for about a month, which means we couldn't get into the building at all to work. When he finally finished grinding and staining the floors, we found we had been left with a HUGE mess. He didn't cover the lower walls with plastic, so all the newly painted walls were destroyed. It took two coats of primer and two coats of paint to cover the dirt, scuff marks and floor stain he got on the walls. He also bumped a pipe in the bathroom with the grinder, and caused a leak. We came in the next day to find the bathroom flooded and water seeping under the walls and soaking up into the new drywall. We had to hire a plumber to repair the leak. Everything in the building was covered in an inch of concrete dust. Even closed cabinets and drawers were filled with concrete dust.
Finally a year later, we are finished with construction, and are ready for him to seal the joints, cap a couple holes, and wax the floors. The stained floors look horrible. There are black stains everywhere from the old mastic, and every corner still has mastic because his grinder couldn't reach into the corners. We decided not to hire him for the other half of the building, but we still need him to finish what he started.
After two weeks of calling, texting and/or emailing him daily, we have not heard back from him. His voice and name are still on his voice mail, and his email address is apparently still active. His business Facebook page is also still active.
This week his former employee showed up asking for proof that he worked on my building. Roger Barnes never paid his employee for the job. He told his employee that he would pay him with the he billed me $3,000 he billed me for extra expenses.
From what this employee and other contractors that know Roger Barnes, Iowa City Concrete Finishers is very poorly managed, and he often leaves jobs unfinished because he can't pay for labor or materials. He spends the down payment for a job on other bills, and then has to take the down payment from his next job to pay for the job he is currently doing. If he doesn't have the next job lined up, he can't finish the job he is doing. He's robbing Peter to pay Paul.
....and I'll be seeing him in court.

UPDATE 11/14/13  It appears the owner is changing the name of the company to avoid the complaints against him. I checked the Facebook page for Iowa City Concrete Finishers, and they are now doing business under the name "Creative Concrete By RDB".

  • When the windows came in they were the wrong size. The installer had to remeasure the windows. I had taken a day off from work so I could be there when they installed them ,but they couldn't because they were the wrong size. They reordered the windows they came in about two weeks later. So that I didn't have to take off any more work they set up a Sat appointment to install them. The installers did an great job on the installation , they cleaned up the area around the house where they had been working, took off their shoes when they came in the house . After the first problem with the wrong size, I am very pleased with the windows they look and work good. The difference in the amount off heat that is blocked, compared to the old windows is very remarkable. The windows are on the south side of our house, during the hottest summer days they are cool to the touch on the inside. We had half of our windows replaced this spring and I plan on doing the other half next spring and I'm planning on using HCI again .

  • I chose this company based upon other reviews, and based upon the feedback of others on pet/urine stains, the clean citrus smell, and that the owner had pets as well, and was well-versed in dealing with these situations.
I needed a bedroom, living room and stairs cleaned, and I had one spot in the corner of my living room in which one of my cats had peed at one time, and I just needed to get the smell out, even though that spot has not been a recurring problem with my cats. In my daughter's bedroom, there were multiple stains from cat throw-up spots, as well as a few areas where my daughter had spilled or gotten some make-up on the floor.
I thought I had asked plenty of questions ahead of time, including the process of the cleaning. Marty was very personable, and very, very good to work with, very prompt, courteous and knowledgeable. When I asked specific questions on the process, Marty did explain that he did not use a hot water extraction process, it was a low-moisture process, but for areas that needed special attention, he did use a smaller machine which did a water extraction.
The day that Marty came, I was working in my home office, so did not get a chance to watch the process, as I was pretty busy all morning; however, when I heard him cleaning the stairs, I did poke my head out. The cleaning process consisted of some type of round, vibrating cleaning pad; but there was nothing to extract any dirt from the carpet. I went back to my office, but later wondered how the dirt was actually extracted from the carpet if this was the process that was used?
Anyway, when Marty was through cleaning the carpets, I saw him out, and shortly thereafter (maybe 15 min), when I had a break from work, I went into the lower-level, where the carpets had been cleaned, to check out the rooms. I was VERY disappointed. From other reviews, people seemed to rave about the clean citrus smell, but I smelled none of that. My daughter's room still smelled stale, and of dirty laundry, etc; and the same for my living room. I even got down and smelled the carpet, and there was no refreshing clean carpet or citrus smell.
Another thing was the stains in my daughter's room (which is a light-to-medium gray carpet). The stains that were previously there were MUCH more pronounced than before. In addition, after the carpets were cleaned, the carpet seam is now visible, when it wasn't before (my home is only 6-1/2 years old), and the high-traffic areas in the room were still dingy and dirty looking.
There are no words to describe how absolutely disappointed and sick that I was with the results.
A few days later, with the stains in my daughter's room, I bought a can of Woolite Heavy-traffic foam carpet cleaner, and decided to see if I could get the stains out myself. Well, I can tell you that with a single application of Woolite, I was able to remove the stains! I was really quite shocked, because I thought if the stain remover that a professional carpet cleaner applied wouldn't remove a stain, what are the chances that a home carpet stain remover would work! All I could do is just look at the carpet where the stain used to be, just absolutely stunned.
As for the spot in my living room, I left it a week to dry and air out, but it still smelled like pet urine, even though Marty uses a special pet enzyme solution to neutralize the odors. (he did say that sometimes it takes a few applications). Well, I called Marty a few weeks later to express my disappointment, and had him come back to try again with the spot in the living room 2 weeks later; that was about 3 weeks ago, and the spot still smells. I have had stunning results in the past with using Nature's Miracle, so I guess my only option at this point is to: 1) buy some Nature's Miracle to saturate the spot; 2) hire another professional carpet cleaner; 3) rent a cleaner to do it myself; all with the hopes of better results than what I received from Heaven's Best.
I will also say, that when I called Marty and told him how unhappy I was, he did seem genuinely taken aback that I was so disappointed, and asked if I wanted my money back. However, I expressed to him that I didn't call with the expectations of a refund, as I understand he is trying to make a living, and with my living quite a ways out, etc, that just was not my intention. I just thought it was only fair that he know my displeasure with the quality of the job that was performed.
Bottom line - I would not recommend Heaven's Best, as my experience with this process was not a positive one.
Update 5/8/2013 - I rented a Rug Doctor to clean these 2 rooms on 5/4/2013. The bedroom has been empty and unused since it was cleaned by Heaven's Best, and the family room is rarely ever used. I have attached a few pictures of what the water looked like, consistently, when dumping the dirty water from the recovery tank of the Rug Doctor. I'm not sure if the pictures are as good as what I saw in person, but I think it gives you a fairly good idea of how dirty the carpets were after having them professionally cleaned.

  • Jody Barkley has done a fantastic job on phase 1 of this major commercial renovation project, and I will be hiring him for phase 2. He is licensed and his work has passed all building inspections. This project has taken quite a bit of time, but it is understandable. I've also had delays on my end that has slowed him down. This is a huge job, and a large electrical company with multiple employees might have taken as long and charged way more. Jody has been great to work with and very patient with my constantly changing plans and chaotic work site. He's been very helpful with making suggestions when I encounter problems in my renovation. It's great to be working with an individual and not a large company because of the flexibility and individualized service.
