    Dennys Plumbing & Heating

Denny is a seasoned plumber, and he has always responded ASAP to my calls for help over the years (I've lived here 8 years, and have called him for my furnace and my plumbing).  He knows and remembers the layout of my plumbing, and where to find what he needs to do the job efficiently.  This call, he turned off the water, took apart the mechanism that controls the level of water in the toilet tank and stops it, found the small seal that was the problem, and replaced it.  He then went back to the basement and turned the water back on.  I told him about the sewer backup and he ran some water and tested the cleanout between for the house itself and found my pipes inside the house were not the problem, the problem lay in the outbound pipe between my house and the sewer.  He had to return to the shop and retrieve his augur which was mounted to the bed of a pickup truck, as well as some help because of the weight of the machine.  The outbound cleanout had standing water,  He ran his auger for nearly 40 minutes between 75-80 feet from the house to the city sewer main attempting to remove the blockage, but said he kept hitting something hard and was unable to break through.  He gave the names of two other local concerns (one a private citizen who owns an augur for his own farm work, the other a local plumber, Leon Plumbing Works, also reviewed by me, and not favorably) who had more powerful augurs with more torque to break through the "blockage".

I trust Denny.  While I was still working, I would leave a key for him in an agreed-upon place so he could let himself in and service my furnace in the winter.  He even remembers my dog, and always has a biscuit and a lovepat for her.  He has fixed and rerouted plumbing, including broken pipes, leaks and blockages, installed new plumbing fixtures (bathroom basin and cabinet) and the filter I bought to install on the kitchen pipes to filter drinking/cooking water.  He has never ceased to be kind, caring and trustworthy, and does not look to pile on to my bills.  Because I am on a fixed income, and even when I wasn't, he allows his bills to be paid on time, and charges 1% simple interest on the unpaid balance until it is paid.  I would never hesitate to recommend Denny to anyone who needed a good plumber at reasonable prices.

A Snake for Every Drain (Stephen Rehbein)

I was at the end of my rope.  The area where I live, in south central Iowa in very rural country, is not an easy place to find contractors and businesses specializing in just everything.  I had gone through all the plumbing services in the telephone books in a 25-mile area, including the ones recommended by my usual plumber, Denny's Plumbing and Heating (who tried but did not have the length and torque of equipment to reach the blockage) and those recommended to me by the local water department crew who had come to my house to ensure the problem was not in the city main (it was not) on July 17, 2014.  Any plumbers I contacted who had the equipment told me their equipment was broken down and they were awaiting parts to fix it, and I was approaching the third week of a problem with a clogged sewer drain.  I finally happened to go through a phone directory that covers most of southwest/southern Iowa and looked up "sewer" and found the listing for A Snake for Every Drain.  I immediately called and told Stephen of my plight, as well as the fact that I was down to my last $6.00 for the month (SS monthly) and could not pay him outright for his services.  He very, very kindly said that he would trust me to be good for the money, and that he would come to my house at "noonish" on July 18 and try to solve the problem, giving the warning that he could not fix broken pipes, were that the problem, he could only clear a drain of a blockage.  Sure enough, today at 11:30 I happened to see a pickup truck pulling a trailer stop in front of the house.  Stephen and his father-in-law, David, who sometimes works with him, had arrived to save the day.  They worked for about 40 minutes, adding an additional length of line to the augur so they had 150 feet to work with, found and broke through the blockage and re-augured twice more to ensure they had cleaned the line thoroughly (I was running the household water in all the sinks, bathtub, toilet at their instruction while they worked).  I was presented at the end of their work with a bill for $160, including tax and their trip from Humeston to Leon, which has to be at least 25 miles (unless you're a bird), and when I asked how much he wanted monthly Stephen told me I could pay as much or as little as I needed, as long as I paid on it monthly.  He was kind and considerate, Iowa-friendly and someone I would recommend to anyone who needed help with getting to the source of the problem with a drain blockage.

Hurray!!  I can bathe and do laundry again!!

    Leon Plumbing Works

    Badly, and they didn't care.

Leon Plumbing Works was referred to me by my usual plumber, Denny's Plumbing & Heating (reviewed by me), as a plumbing service who had an augur capable of reaching the blockage in my drain pipe, as well as the strength to break through it.  I called them immediately after Denny left after trying and failing to reach the blockage on Monday, July 7.  I called daily to ask whether they were coming, and each time was told "you're on the list".  By Friday, July 11, having been unable to shower, bathe, or do laundry and afraid each time I flushed the toilet for a week, I called the last time and was told the plumber was working out of town all week.  The lackadaisical and offhand treatment of what was, for me, bordering on an emergency left a stench in my thoughts as regards this business concern.  It was, at the least, unprofessional, and if Denny retires, which I fear he will soon, I'll be calling a plumber from a surrounding town before I call these folks 1 mile from my house.
