    Hodne, Dr. Barbara L
I have followed Dr. Hodne to three different offices around the Des Moines area. She is a doctor that really listens to what you're saying and gives various options depending on the situation. Just a wonderful person and a fantastic doctor!

    Jerrold V Flatt

Dr Flatt's office makes it clear that he declines to update his rather dark, quite small waiting room with the stained chairs and one fake plant.  The rest of his office, to include the clerical area, the exam rooms, his office and what used to be Katie's office are drab and dingy.  He is never running on time.  I have waited an hour and a half to get in to my appointment when the small waiting room was full of people sneezing and coughing.  There is nowhere to go to avoid those germs.  Dr. Flatt says he has no intention of hiring a woman physician's assistant for his female patients, like he had at one time, or any physician's assistant at all, even though he is always running very late for appointments and seems overwhelmed.  I continue to request a woman practitioner but he continues to deny the need.  He is the only practitioner in his office.  Dr. Flatt is said to be a good diagnostician, but his bedside manner is very quiet, awkward and stiff. He isn't easy to communicate with and I always get the impression that he has somewhere better to be than with me in the exam room.  Even though I have been on the same medications, with the same dosages, for years, I am required to make an appointment and sit in the visitor's chair in his messy office just so he can print out my prescription refills from his computer.  There isn't really any exam.  He may listen to my heart very briefly and order some lab work on occasion, but there is no exam.  With Katie I wasn't required to make an appointment just for her to print out prescription refills.  She trusted me to come to her if I needed medical attention, but she didn't force me to see her for no reason.  Frequently, the prescriptions that are in Dr. Flatt's computer to be printed out are not even mine, even though, for some reason, they are under my name.  It generally takes several days for a routine refill, with no changes in the medication or dosage, to be authorized.  The pharmacy is required to send multiple prompts in order to get a refill, and occasionally my prescriptions, that I have been on for years will suddenly change dosage or be refused to the pharmacy for no discernible reason, so I have to be responsible for correcting the doctor's mistakes.  His office has the ability to do some labs in house, and can also do X-rays.  The front desk staff is moody and Dr Flatt only hires lesser qualified nursing staff so he doesn't have to pay for an RN.  There usually aren't enough staff to go around and phones will ring and ring, making me wonder if anyone will answer them.

My last experience was good. The staff is great, other than they don't communicate well from the front desk back to the nurses. I called and left a message and never heard back. When I called back, they said they never got the message, but I had spoken with someone. I've been using them for a year.

    Patricia Fasbender DO
She is not a prescription machine like most doctors and she actually takes her time. Her facility is great. I would absolutely recommend her services to a friend or a family member. They are nice, cordial, and the environment is good.

There are okay but we have a few problems with scheduling and monitoring some blood levels on things that I'm going through. They get competitive when I try to get them work with another clinic yet sometimes I need them to work together. I don't know why that is. They don't do anything that they don't have to do.

    Edward Steinmann DO,DC
He's an independent and doesn't go by what stupid hospital people say to do. He doesn't follow, "Well, if they have this, this is how we treat them, and we don't treat them any other way than this way." He treats you as an individual. He's easy going. He believes in vitamins and stuff. If something that will work instead of using a prescription, he does recommend that. I won't change using him unless something drastic happens or he retires.

She's thorough and looks at the problem. I had a problem and she told me they were dealing with it the wrong way. She stopped medication and took another approach. She sent me to a good gastroenterologist, who figured out the problem. She explained my problem well and told me what I needed to do.

I like the doctors that I go to at my group that are just up the street. I also like the hospital because I like the care they give and it's a clean hospital. The cleanliness and care they provide is a big thing for me.

    Hodne, Dr. Barbara L
She sits down with you and discusses your medical needs.  She make sure she fully understands your needs and that you fully understand her instructions once a course of action has decided.  I met a friend that was clearly ill and down.  She had been to her regular practitioner and she continued to get sicker of a length of time because someone did not take the time to listen.  I sent her to Dr. Hodne and she actually went and when she left her new office in Ankeny she called and cried and thanked me.  She was so happy that someone took the time to spend with her and was actually not offering yet another pill.

    Fred Marsh MD
Dr. Marsh is very friendly and down to earth. Lets the patient have a say when there are treatment options to consider. Spends the necessary time so you do not feel rushed. The office has an aura of calm.
