  • We arrived at the hospital on time -- however, we waited nearly an hour past our appointment before the doctor came in the room. He did not introduce himself - neither did the two assistants(?) who came in with him. The doctor looked over at my husband's hands, which had been soaking in water and gently washed by the LPN who had been watching over us, and said, and quot;These hands are too dirty.and quot; He then looked at the LPN and said, and quot;I can't work on these hands.and quot; He then instructed the LPN to wash my husbands hands for 30 minutes and then give him a call. Not once in this time did he talk to us or touch my husbands hands.
    I would note at this time that the burns were approximately a week old. My husband had been cleaning his hands as best he could -- and, in the examination room in the doctor's presence, my husband's hands were resting on a towel on a table next to a bowl of soapy water.
    The doctor started to leave the room. I spoke up and said, and quot;Do I understand that you want us to sit here another 30 minutes while my husband has his hands washed again?and quot;. It was at this point that the doctor finally turned to me so that I could see his nameplate -- otherwise, I would never have known his name was McGrail. I had to repeat my question before he answered, and quot;Yes, his hands are too dirty, they need to be washed again.and quot;
    The end result was that we left without any treatment except hand washing, because we decided we could just as easily spend another hour and a half at home washing hands as at Mercy Hospital.
    Not only would I never recommend Dr. McGrail, I would never recommend Mercy Hospital's would care unit. What a waste of time. My husband's hands healed perfectly with the care of our personal physician.

  • We arrived at 6:30 to prepare for the surgery. The only unpleasant thing we experienced was the wait from 7:30 to 9:45 when the procedure was scheduled to start, but it was just having to wait and feeling a bit anxious that made it so.The nurses who prepared my husband were upbeat and happy to give us their attention. While my husband was in surgery, I waited in a spacious lounge which was more like a living room, with comfortable seating and refreshments available. I was given a buzzer, like in a restaurant, which altered me when the doctor was finished and could talk with me about how things went. There was also recliner chairs, and I was able to take a nap while I waited to hear from the doctor. I even got a blanket and a pillow.
    I then got another buzzer so I could know when my husband had woken up and was ready to go up to a recovery room. I went up with him and the nurse told us of the goals he would have to achieve before he was allowed to go home. She said he might go home in a few hours or stay overnight, depending on his progress. She checked off each attained goal on a whiteboard, and we did go home that day. One of the goals was for my husband to be able to eat something and not be nauseous from his medication. He got a menu, as did I, and we ordered lunch. The choices were pretty good, and the quality and flavor not bad, especially for and quot;hospital foodand quot;.
    The recovery room was pleasant and sunny and nicely decorated. There was a sofa that I could stretch out on, and we watched some afternoon judge shows while we waited to go home.
