    Deaconess Hospital

    My parents have always received good care at Deaconess Hospital. I plan a minimum of 3 hours when going to the ER. This last time was seven hours... The staff were very kind and helpful. After admission and on the floors, not having a public/family area for coffee or drinks, the staff offer and bring coffee to family. The staff were patient with my combative father on an earlier admission. When family was with my father, the staff did not come in as often to check on him. They responded well to requests for help or medication.

    The case manager(s) we worked with to find long-term care for my dad were very helpful and patient. It was a lot of information for us to absorb!

    The hospital cafeteria was only open for choppy times. I went there several times and it was closed. Confusing schedule for the cafeteria and the other smaller sandwich/coffee area. Nice gift shop.

    The doctors were very helpful and informative. It was a little confusing at times as sometimes a student, then assistant would come to see the patient, BEFORE the doctor himself came!

    I like the whiteboard in the patient's room that gives the names of the nurse and aid and other pertinent information.

    My two complaints with Deaconess were in the ER. 1) After a bad fall and an ambulance to bring my mother to the ER in April 2013, she was diagnosed with a fractured pelvis. After the diagnosis, my mother was quickly discharged! They loaded her into our car and sent her home! We were in shock. No information, no instructions, no equipment, no help as we began the weekend. Getting my mother from the car to the house, via pushing her sitting on her walker, was a nightmare. Before entering the house, Mom went unconscious. Back in her room, we had no fracture bedpan (which the ER did not tell us to get) and could not find one at the nearest pharmacy. We had to call the home health agency and ask them to send the nurse for emergency visits on Saturday and Sunday. Mom fell again on Saturday. We took Mom to the ER, but NOT Deaconess this time, having lost faith in them. We took her to Baptist Hospital where she was admitted for three days and then transferred to a facility for therapy.

    2) My dad was brought in to the ER via ambulance with combativeness. After checking him and doing tests, the ER told us that he had no medical problem. We could not bring him home, as we could not handle him. We needed a social worker. It was suggested that we have a 'mobile interview' for possible admission to a geriatric psychiatric unit. After another two hour wait, around 11 p.m., a laptop was brought in and someone via Skype somehow 'assessed' dad and talked with us. This was so strange and inadequate. We did not understand that this was a general psychiatric evaluation and then various facilities would respond if they would take my dad, based on this evaluation. It was so strange to try to talk to the laptop person. The first thing this person said (coached by someone off-camera) was that Dad would probably not be accepted, no matter what we said... The whole thing seemed very unprofessional and inadequate. There must be a better way. After another wait, we were told a facility would accept Dad and waited again for transport to transfer him.

    I might go back to Deaconess ER, but only as a second choice.
