    Vehicle wouldn't start, suspected starter motor bad. Curlee came to home, towed car to his shop, a mile away, and did a diagnostic; starter motor fine, battery dead; he charged battery and only charged for the tow. $50 total. Got car back withing a few hours. As good as Sears Automotive. Honesty and speed very much appreciated.
    Having a shop so close is a real convenience for all the subdivision between Pahoa and Keaau towns. Curlee is willing and helpful, but needs to improve professionalism: tidy up his messy shop, get rid of the fire ants crawling across the desk, and most importantly hire and retain professional ASE certified technicians who don't distract him by yaking about extraneous stuff. And keep drop in friends to a minimum.

    I was pleased with everything except the following:
    1)  The wait time was about 1 hour longer than quoted.  I called and I was told they do not take reservations for new tire installation, but once there, I noted that some customers did have reservations.
    2)  Their website claimed they used Nitrogen in their tires, but when there they told me they DID NOT use Nitrogen.  The Manager quickly called someone to have them take the info on their website down.
    3) I think their tires are somewhat on the high side.

    My old car needed a front end alignment, as it was pulling to the left.  After calling and visiting several shops, I decided on Wally's, mostly because it was close to home.  The 5 or 6 shops that were contacted all charged around the same price for this service.  They honored the appointment and I waited about 1 1/2 hours at the shop while the work was being done (that is exactly the time they said it would take).  Wally was very pleasant and professional to me.  He explained the checks he did on the suspension system during the course of his work, and told me I need not worry about any other components.  This shop also does annual safety inspections;  I will bring mine here when it is due next.

    Pahoa Auto Parts Inc
    It takes nearly 30 minutes to get to Hilo from my house, so there has to be a good reason for making that trip.  I called a few parts houses there to get a quote and all of them were higher priced than Pahoa Auto Parts.  So, my reasons for patronizing that business over all others are as follows:
    1.  Cheapest prices, for the most part.
    2.  Much shorter distance to my home.
    3.  Sales staff are very friendly, professional, and helpful.

    Goodyear Auto Service Ctr
    My 1999 Nissan Sentra needed a front end alignment, so a 9:00 am appointment was made several days in advance; the guy on the phone said it would take about 1 1/2 hours to complete the work.  I got there at 10 till the hour, filled out the forms, then walked over to another company I had business with while I was waiting for the work to be done.  I returned to the Good Year store 45 minutes later and noticed that my car was parked in the same spot as it was when I left it.  So I asked the guy behind the counter if they had finished the work already.  He said that they had not started it yet.  Needless to say, I was not too happy about that situation and asked the guy to give me back my keys.  He said that they are ready to pull it into the shop right now.  I told him that he had his chance to serve this customer and failed miserably at it by not honoring the appointment that had been made.  I left that establishment and took the care somewhere else for the required service.

    Goodyear Auto Service Ctr
    Goodyear's phone manners are good. Not so good once you are in the building, we were often kept waiting or bypassed with no explanation, while the next customer was served. They were unwilling to explain or help with less expensive ways of doing things and, overall, the service was shoddy, although there were one or two bright spots in our dealings with them, mostly friendliness. The personal service element is not there and it became less and less appealing to pass through the door.

    I am new to the Island and needed an inexpensive car (nothing on this Island is inexpensive). A 1999 Nissan Sentra with 106.300 miles on it was bought from the local (Hilo) independent rental car business. It was a clean, quiet car that operated well. One week later the head gasket blowed up, which forced me to seek out a repair shop so it could be up and running again. 4 or 5 shops were contacted for a price quote. The range was $1400 on the low end to $3000 on the high end. Curlee's quote was among the lowest. It is a well equipped shop located in the middle of Hawaiian Paradise Park, which is within 2 miles of my home. This added a convenience factor to the many reasons I like this shop. The family that owns and operates the business have been working on motor vehicles for 20 or 30 years and seem to know a thing or two about cars. It took them about 2 weeks to get the car back to me, but the work seemed to have been done right, and when I asked for a warranty, they said it would be guaranteed unconditionally for 90 days. It has been nearly 2 months since the work was done. I had to take it back to them last week because the coolant system was losing water and I was afraid the head gasket was leaking again. The system was pressure tested and Matt, the mechanic, told me everything was tight except for the radiator cap and that I should get a new one.
    Everyone there that I interacted with was very professional and most pleasant. Josh took me to and from my home to the shop whenever the car had to be left. Shaleen, the owner, told me I could get my oil changed while I wait for $15 if I were to bring in the materials. Matt, the mechanic explained everything to me that I wanted to know about and gave me great tips about how to save money on my current and future repairs. I went to the auto parts store to buy rotors, brake shoes and pads and cyllinders for $160. Curlee's charged me $145 for the labor. All other brake shops contacted wanted $750-$800 for the job.

    Lex Brodie's Tire
    We have been to Lex Brodie's several times and each time it was easy and straightforward and, the times it was an emergency, they fitted us in quickly and kept us informed. They give sound advice in the customer's best interest, not Lex Brodies' and their prices and warranties are fair, we didn't feel ripped off. The tires they sold us have lasted well and, although they are farther away from our home than other tire companies, we always go to Lex Brodies in Pahoa now because we know we can rely on their friendly, informed and efficient service. The only small issue we have had is being kept waiting a little longer than feels comfortable or necessary, due inaccurate estimate of time it will take to do a job.

    Orchid Isle Ford is simply the best auto company we have ever dealt
    with, in Hawaii or anywhere else in the world. They are professional,
    efficient, helpful, they really care about and get to know their
    customers and we wouldn't go anywhere else. Plus they work hard to keep
    the prices reasonable on parts and labor and we have always felt that
    they go the extra mile to make sure everything is covered well for the
    least cost possible.

    .Midas refused to honor lifetime warranty on the warranty for labor of $10, and instead charged me a very exhorbitant price of $104.04 that was way beyond the stated warranty of labor for $10.
    I even showed them a copy of the warranty certificate but they won't honor it.
