I spoke with owner of HBC Builders, Marcus Peterson, by phone on or about Dec. 10, 2013 about constructing a concrete driveway apron, at which time we discussed price and a construction date. On Dec. 14, 2013, Mr. Peterson and his concrete sub-contractor came to the site and the three of us discussed how the concrete should be poured. Very specific instructions were given that the finished grade (top of slab) would be level with the existing grade (top of the ground). This was not done. When I asked about welded wire fabric reinforcing, I was assure that the "new fiber reinforced concrete" did not need WWF, therefore it was not placed in the slab. As a consequence, the side of the slab is broken in one place where a delivery truck drove over it. Because the site is on the high side of a curve, an additional instruction given was that there should be a 12 inch wide strip of concrete adjacent to the roadway. This was not done. The result is that the end points of the concrete on both sides of the driveway are now cracked and are breaking due to high speed traffic edging off the asphalt. Again, as the site is on the high side of the roadway, an unnecessary "lip", a one inch edge, was left at the place where the concrete joins the asphalt. The concrete was supposed to be dyed (an additional expense) after the concrete cured for a month. As of this date, October 28, 2014, there has been no dye applied.

The project suffered due to a severe lack of communication and coordination.  Cliff sent workmen to the site with little preparation - supplies would not be on site, little to no project management on site, incomplete instructions for the subs.  Due to Cliff's lack of project management, things went wrong.  Then there would be a "fix" but never the same quality had it been done correctly the first time.
Things started off wrong when the dirt for the concrete backfill was delivered and dumped in the driveway, spilling onto our neighbor's grass.  The pile blocked all further traffic so all workers and delivery vehicles had to drive through the yard, around the house, and park on the front grass.  There are now ruts and bald spots in the front yard.  After using half the dirt for the concrete, the remaining pile just sat there for weeks before "clean up".  "Clean up" meant they just came up and spread the red clay and sand over the driveway (not a paved driveway, but it used to have grass before this) and piled the red clay up against the newly poured concrete pad over areas that are going to be planted in shrubbery.  After our complaint, Cliff sent the crew back out to remove the dirt, but it created a lot of mess that could not be reversed.  The concrete pad, the foundation of the porch, was a problem from the word 'go'.  It was supposed to be red but it's not.  The channel drain was installed incorrectly.  And the conduit for the planned electrical outlets was not laid before the concrete was poured so now we have electrical conduit run along the outside wall - tacky!!  There were other problems and issues, too many to clutter up the review.
A project that should have taken two weeks extended to six weeks with unsatisfactory results.
