In home euthanasia of my 14 1/2 year old cairn terrier, who had cancer.
The doctor called ahead and was right on time and was very professional and very caring. He did a cursory exam and sat Indian style right on the floor with my sick little guy. (He confirmed/supported my decision.) He explained what/how things would progress and guided me through everything that was needed. The sedative was given while I was holding him, and he went to sleep in just a few minutes. The dog was very comfortable and the doctor talked with me and we pettted the dog for while to be sure he was fully sedated and would feel no discomfort. Then the doctor explained it was time and during his final release I was right there with my little guy, on his favorite blanket. By the time the final injection was finished being given, he was gone. The doctor took a paw print for me on a small plaster disk. I also received a small plastic heart box with some clippings from where he had to shave him on his leg to make sure they got into his vein OK. (This was the best remembrance, as it had his scent.) My little guy was removed in a small basket, wrapped in his "traveling" towel, along with his favorite frog toy. The doctor gave me his number to call if I needed anything, and I received emails a few times in the next few days, as well. The doctor took his time, and frequently allowed me the chance to guide the timing and make sure I had enough time to say goodbye.
In a few weeks, my dogs ashes were returned to my local veterinarian, where I picked him up. He was sealed in a beautiful, etched wooden box, with a small gold name plate, a candle, some poems on scrolls, a sympathy card, and more information about where to get support, if I needed it.
I can't imagine any other way of dealing with such a difficult time - making the call was the hardest thing I have ever done, but I can't imagine a better outcome. (I was not looking forward to going to the vets office and dealing with the waiting room, etc. and the lonely ride home.) This was so much more private and allowed me to deal with my emotions and say goodbye. The private cremation and return of the ashes were about half the cost of the service, and I felt were very much worth the expense!
