    Southern Orthopedic Specs PA
My experience with Southern Orthopedics was a nightmare. I was injured while overseas and had to return to the United States for further treatment. On June 1st, 2017, I severed the top portion of my right index finger. Along with this I fractured my finger in two spots and completely crushed the bone in another area. I returned home on June 23rd and was referred to Dr. Mark Awantang who specializes in hand injuries. Upon my first visit I had to wait over an hour to be seen. Once I was called back I was seen by his assistant, Don. Don did not act as if he was concerned with how I injured my finger and did not provide much information. He stepped out and Dr. Awantang entered. Awantang explained my finger was broke and it would heal on its own. He then stated if it didn't begin to heal then he would insert screws into my finger. I returned for a 2 week follow up and again was seen by Don. Don states my finger is still broke but mending and he wanted to give it more time to heal on its own. Then he grabs the tip of my finger where it's broke and tries bending my joint. On my 3 week follow up (now it's been almost 6 weeks since first seeing a specialist and 8 weeks since my injury) I again see Don. He tells me my break is healing but it's still not completely healed. He says again he is trying to avoid surgery. I explained to him that I work overseas and needed to get back. He shrugs that off and says he will see me in two weeks. Also during this appointment he flicks my broke finger and says he was seeing how much pain I was still in. At this point I'm frustrated because it's been basically 2 months and I am getting nowhere. So I go to the Andrew's Institute in Gulf Breeze and see another specialist. I have my doctors appointment in the morning and was in surgery that afternoon. The doctor stated my finger was not showing signs of healing and was completely broke in half. This doctor advised my finger was not going to heal on its own because my bones weren't connecting. He put pins in my finger, found where my nail matrix was damaged and needed repairing and closed a large gash that was still underneath my fingernail from the initial injury. He also found where a chunk of my bone had been cut off as well. Dr, Awantang's office cost me money, time from work and unnecessary pain because they didn't know what they were doing or just didn't care. I also had to keep calling their office to remind them to submit my paperwork for my short term disability. I do not recommend them to anyone. I also want to mention that I retrieved my x-rays from Awantang's office and you can see in every x-ray from June 28th to August 3rd there was no change in my injury. You could see where the bones were broke and completely separated.

    Gilmore, Dr. Michael D.
Dr G was attentive and offered good suggestions but he was not the right doc for my issues. Wish he could have mentioned that fact that he was not the right doc a bit sooner. However, now that i know the docs area of expertise i would recommend him to others. He was just not the right doc for me this time.

    FIRST STEP CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Fantastic place! I love First Step! I have never used a daycare/preschool before, I was a stay at home mom for 3 1/2 years and I was leery of putting my girls just anywhere. I decided to return to college to finish a Bachelors degree before the kids got into school themselves and happened upon First Step. One of the best things I have stumbled upon! The teachers are concerned, caring, and very loving to the children there. Any concerns I have had they have addressed immediately and were very understanding and empathetic. I have a 3 1/2 year old and an 8 month old currently in their program, and I'm pleased to say my preschooler comes home counting, telling me about shapes and colors, she was actually singing the whole alphabet song within her first 2 weeks! Both of them seem to like their 'school' very much, and my oldest is actually upset when it's not a school day and she can't go see her friends and "Miss Roxy," her teacher. My baby has attachment issues, but she smiles and goes willingly to the ladies in the infant room which tells me all I need to know. The facility is older, seems to be in what used to be a house, but it is always clean.
Word to the wise, don't be late. No children are accepted after 9am (I live 25 minutes away and was almost turned away one day for being 3 minutes late). Naptime is after lunch from 12noon-1:45pm, the teachers don't really like to disturb the children for one to leave when the rest are napping. If you are called for a sick child, they will not accept the child back at the facility for a full 24 hours from when you picked the child up (including into the next working day), regardless of whether they are no longer ill or have a doctor's appointment. I am certain this holds true for most daycares, but I learned all of this firsthand.

    James Talkington MD
He was just very nice and easy to talk to. He did not push surgery and a lot of extra things. In fact, he told me he did not need to see me again unless I feel that I need to so I thought that was good. He also has his own x-ray and diagnostic right there on the premises so I didn't have to go to another x-ray place. With regards to his availability, I had to wait to get in.

    Abaco, Dr. Kerry

Great results on my neck.  My back pain is caused by a lot of problems so it involved several treatments.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to quit going but just as soon as I can.  I was able to sleep better that I have in a long time.  During and after the treatments you really feel very relaxed.

It is an incredible experience for helping with my pain.

I know it's a lot better for me and my pain than having surgery and taking pain pills.

    CALHOUN CHIROPRACTIC CENTER
I was seen the same day that I called. I had some relief immediately. After two more appointments over the next 5 days I was so much better that I don't need to go back. I will continue to use Lisa for chiropractic maintenance.

    Gilmore, Dr. Michael D.
Dr. Michael D. Gilmore is kind. I had heard nightmares about workmen's comp experiences, but he is just nothing like that. He does surgery as well. He is not specific to one joint. He uses non-narcotic medications.

    Bay Medical Center
The main thing I had the bypass surgery and the doctor strongly recommended that I have to undergo a cardiac rehabilitation program but wasn't a requirement but the doctor said he felt that I should and it had been quite a while since I have been to a fitness center on a treadmill so I signed up for cardiac rehab program. The people at the rehab had different staff like a nurses that specializes in rehabilitation and then they have some volunteers that work in there. They were all friendly, nice people and some of them had actually had the same medical problem that I have and ndash; the volunteers so they had been down that road and so they were very helpful and using a different machines that they had for us to use. Overall, it was a good experience and I felt a lot better but I went three days a week for three months and it was roughly about an hour time and I like it so much that I continued on with that fitness routine not there and ndash; I'm retired military and there's a naval facility close by where I live and they have a fitness center so I go there free of charge but the Bay Medical Center Rehab Program it was good in a number of ways. They got me back on the right track for healthy lifestyle. They still had seminars periodically that you can go to concerning different health topics so it's a good thing to take advantage of it.

    CALHOUN CHIROPRACTIC CENTER
Dr. Calhoun was punctual and provides the traditional type of chiropractic care (manual adjustments). I felt better after about 6 visits and did not have to return, although I would if I needed assistance again. All of her staff are friendly and accomidating.

I went to physical therapy for almost 6 months and during that time Michelle took care of me except for one time. During the time that I did not get Michelle they had a man provide therapy and in my opinion he was horrible. He was hurting me, which Michelle did also, but when she did it the pain was tolerable. Every time that I left and was in Michelle care my foot would begin to feel better after leaving a few hours later compared to when I first got out of bed in the morning. Yes, the pain is part of the healing process and Michelle was nothing short of a miracle worker, but when I told her it hurt to much, she would back off. Now as for the man that took care of me, when I left that day I felt worse than I normally did until I had my next appointment. I am not saying he was a mean or rough, he just wasn't listening to me, the patient, when I was letting him know to be more gentle. The bone spur felt like a knife in my foot and I really didn't like having to limp around until Michelle got back to fix me and keep me going.
One thing I would like to mention is when I had my last scheduled appointment (38 appointments/ 2 times per week) I was still not up to par, but I kept up with the foot exercises as discussed with Michelle. After 3 months my foot pain finally was gone and I was able to start running again. It had been just shy of a year with no running and it was time to start shedding the pounds off again. Thank you Michelle. You are the best!
