    Atlas Grill Cleaning
Exactly as expected.   Matt was polite, and professional.   He did the work without my being at the property before being paid and with no previous relationship with me.  Will use again!

    Kugel Fireplaces Inc
We were told that there would be a $75 charge for coming out to assess the fireplace problem .  As that would go toward the work, if we chose to have them perform it, we agreed. Fellow who came out was on time and my husband felt he had a good grasp of what was being requested.  He recommended simply 'capping' the gas system in to our bedroom fireplace in order to use it as a 'normal' fireplace.  On seeing the situation in our main fireplace (flu) he said this was something the company could do but did not give a quote or bid, indicating that it should be around $300.  The (email) bid that we received from Mr. Kugel was $650!?!
How did this go from a reasonable hands-on estimate to more than double that?
Mr. Kugel then called to ask if we wanted to have the work done.  I let him know that we were dismayed with the large amount of (his company's) quote.  He did not offer justification for why the amount was so high.
We would only use Kugel if they performed this work for $300.  We are out $75 for their 'inspection' and were left with a bad taste in our mouths about their professionalism.

Galen came within the window of time he said he would.  He took a look up inside the fireplace (from below) but rather than making an attempt at looking at the situation in earnest, said that we should call back the company that had done our chimney cap and cited an area along the chimney he felt needed caulking.  When he left my husband expressed dismay that we had even made the time for him to come out, feeling that he was looking for business that wasn't there instead of addressing our need.  I would not use him for 'roofing' based on his saying something to the effect of our already having had too many people involved in seeing that this gets repair.  Duh!  Now he's just one MORE person who can't (or can't see that it would be profitable to) fix it.

:Mr. Simonton was, in the end, instrumental in referring us elsewhere. I appreciate at least one fireplace 'expert' who was able to isolate who MIGHT be able to do the work.  Unfortunately, we have not been able to secure the services of anyone who will refit the flu, making our fireplace (still ) unusable.
I appreciated this company not just giving us a 'no' and would, for that reason, use them in future.

    Chimney Cricket & Masonry
The impressive thing about Chimney Cricket was that in calling their office (New Year's eve afternoon, i believe it was?) the accountant answered and was helpful, first, in giving me the needed information about the expected time of Friday's 'sweep' and then, since I'd (accidently) lined up a 3rd company, when i reluctantly had to call and cancel, cheerfully communicating that information back to the sweep from their company that was to come out.  She was upset because she does payroll for chimney sweep employees as far away as Michigan and weather issues were threatening not to get the workers, there, paid the next day.
As it was, the first company we'd hired ($119) came through earlier than the 1/6 date they'd given my husband [which started this whole stupid search for a Sweep that really COULD show up, like, BEFORE you'd needed them :-) :-(] and we were hugely pleased with their 'recoup' of our good graces.
If all of Chimney Cricket operates with the conscientiousness of the initial scheduler and the woman in their office that handled business despite 'holiday hours' or feeling that it wasn't her place as accountant to answer their phones and relay information well and promptly ... and ESPECIALLY if i absolutely needed the job done 'pronto', the extra $20 would not have mattered one whit and I'm fairly certain i would have been pleased with their follow-through to get the job done right.

    Olde World Chimney Sweep, Inc.

You know the expression, 'When life gives you lemons ............ make lemonaide'?  I can not, as a former self-employed business woman, rate this company less than an 'A'.  I am sorry that they're scheduled so tightly (they'll be training another sweep when they have the time to do their part to be assured he will be the expert this field deserves),; this busy winter season caught them off-guard, hence the delay In setting up the first appointment.  I might have used this as an opportunity to select a company that could have done our sweep sooner but I liked the price for both one sweep and two inspections, I appreciated the company president's candor AND her communication.

Okay, so while I did not appreciate at all hearing how their sudden equipment problems affected how they handled our (first) scheduled appointment I have to say that it is a rare company that will take a bad-taste-in-your-mouth situation and turn it around.  The big part of this came in having the owner apologize BEFORE assuming we'd take the proffered re-worked appointment (and without  knowing we'd made an appointment with another company and, as it turned out, with yet a THIRD company who would have already swept the chimney last Friday, but for the fact their price was $20 more) so I'd been willing to wait until 12/30 for a sweep that was only $10. more).  And finally, the truly graceful thing Michelle did was to offer the second inspection 'free', but NOT as an 'incentive' to chose her company.  THAT was a 'class' thing for ANY company to do, especially BECAUSE they're short handed and had what we assume was a legitimate equipment shortage.

Okay, as for 'how did it go'?  WONDERFULLY!  Larry came promptly, went to work immediately, was clean, thorough, and told me/us as much as we could ever have hoped to know about these two new chimney /fireboxes we've bought in the 'forever' foreclosure home we now own.  His inspection found a gap that, had we been stupid and burned wood in the fireplace PRIOR to inspection, could well have caused a fire in the attic.  He praised the company's work who had installed chimney cap/architectural surround, recommending if THEY could repair the gap he'd located (& shown us via cell-phone picture), we use them (another 'class act', business-wise) and if they didn't do such work, recommending a second.  Despite ours being the second of 8 sweep/inspections he had lined up until his business day ended, he did not at any time make us feel he was rushed or that he was upset at having some of his labor be 'gratis'.  He is a genuinely nice man, conscientious, and a good reflection of why Olde World got the ratings it did that led us to want their services in the first place.

Make your own 'call'.  I will (being careful to schedule well ahead of 'need') call Olde World when we again need our 'forever' chimneys swept/inspected because of the way they handled a tough business dilemma, irate POTENTIAL customers AND the professionalism and competency of their service once performed.

We are extremely pleased with their service and intend to use them annually to be sure the dryer vent and chimney are clean. We also recommended them to our daughter -- they cleaned her dryer vent -- she was also very pleased with the work they did at her house.

We were recommended by a friend who said good things about him and his work. He was quick to respond and gave us helpful advice on the fireplace mantle design. We were very pleased at how it turned out. He paid meticulous attention to detail and that was very important for us. The piece matches wonderfully with our surrounding woodwork as well. It is a beautiful addition to our home. We will definitely keep in touch for future projects and we recommend him to anyone who needs similar work!
