Car Inspection reviews in Oldsmar

Pat Murray, the owner, is beyond honest. I had an inspection done just this afternoon on a used vehicle I found on Craigslist and was about to purchase pending the results. I am out of state (Chicago) and arranged for the seller to bring the vehicle in to Murraymotive. Pat didn't require the very reasonable $99 payment for the inspection until it was complete. Fifteen minutes into the inspection he concluded the vehicle had been flooded and ended the inspection. He then called me long distance to inform me of the situation. I thanked him for saving me from this mess (see attached photo he emailed) and was ready to give him my credit card info when he said there would be no charge. WOW, he gets my highly earned respect. Give him your business please!

I'll start with the only negative, however, it is a HUGE one! I just purchased an 04 Hyundai Elantra for my niece for $1600.00. I noticed the radiator had a minor leak and the a/c wasn't cooling well. I brought the vehicle in for service. An hour or two later I had a tech call and give me the bad news. The head gasket was bad. A test they performed showed this. Also, the loss of radiator water and the a/c cooling problem he suspected was due to this. Repair for this would be over $2200.00. I told the mechanic the repair was not an option since the car was not worth the repair and I did not believe this was the issue to begin with. I used to build hot rods and am very familiar with auto mechanics. The engine was not overheating or emitting steam from the exhaust and there was no water in the oil. The water loss was due to the leaking radiator. These are "tell tale" signs of a blown head gasket. It made no fiscal sense to spend $2200 to repair a $1600 car. He kept recommending I do the repair and warned me of the problems I could incur. Finally, I insisted he do the work I had asked for and I would take my chances or I would just pick the car up. The repairs I requested were completed and I came to pick the car up the next day. When I went inside, I GUESS HE JUST WASN'T GOING TO GIVE UP. He stated; "Hey just to let you know the car was hard to start this morning probably due to water leaking into the pistons". I just smiled and said; "OK." This was on 4/20/17, almost a year ago. Well, how are things with the car. No overheating, no hard starting and NO BLOWN HEAD GASKET!! I have not had to add an ounce of water to the radiator! So whether it was due to ignorance or worse, to cheat me, it was recommended that I have $2200.00 in repairs that were not needed! I came to this business due to Angie's List ratings and if you remove the issue with the head gasket I would have been very satisfied with the repair, the time taken and the cost. It is of little consolation though if you get great service and price for a repair THAT WAS NEVER NEEDED IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

    1.  I'VE DRIVEN THE CAR FOR 100,000 MILES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM WITH THE BATTERY.  NOW, THERE IS A SHORT SOMEWHERE, AND THE BATTERY IS BEING DRAINED.  CAR WILL NOT START WITHOUT A JUMP START AFTER SITTING AN APPRECIABLE LENGTH OF TIME.

    2.  BOLTS, SCREWS, AND FASTENERS ARE MISSING.

    3.  HAND BRAKE WILL NOT FULLY ENGAGE.

    4.  WINDSHIELD WASHER LINE DISCOVERED BROKEN.  WAS NOT BROKEN BEFORE SERVICING.

As they took me out to view the car I just got a feeling they were trying to get more money from me. They claimed my master cylinder was leaking, I had two other mechanics check and they disagreed. I did need to fix the r/f ev axle, however their estimate was about $340. I got two other estimates and they were less than $200 and I got the work done for $160. For one of the parts they were going to charge me $113, but I went to AutoZone and it was only $13. When I asked for the estimate, they tried to push the work on the master cylinder (probably because they knew it wasn't a problem). The last interesting thing was when I was paying and they were placing the receipts in the envelope they "forgot" to include the estimate. I had to remind them so that I would have it. To add to the experience...after the oil change my car was leaking oil. I had to have another mechanic fix that problem. Please be careful if you go to them for work.
