Antique Store reviews in Miami Shores

In January, 2013, we purchased an antique (1885 circa) dome-top steamer trunk at a local garage sale.  The trunk  had incredible restoration potential, however far beyond our abilities and patience to even contemplate where to begin. The engraved/embossed metal work covering the trunk showed extensive  rusting, some of the oak slats were damaged,  the leather carrying handles had long since rotted away, the latches and brass locking mechanism were missing or broken, the brass roller wheels on the bottom of the trunk were either missing or jammed, the interior removable tray was ready to fall apart and the interior was coated with remnants of padded lining material, likely installed by the previous owners who used to the trunk to store linens.
We therefore set out to locate a professional  restorer with the necessary experience, skills and resources to do the job properly.  After searching online in vain and only finding a number of  out-of-state companies,  we turned to Angie's List  and  came across  Jannine Christensen of Restore and Adore, located right up the street in Oakland Park.  After emailing pictures of the trunk for an initial assessment of its condition,   I drove it up to her warehouse/studio. It was clear from the very beginning that Jannine takes on each project as a unique challenge, as though it were her own and with as much enthusiasm as a child opening Christmas presents for the first time.  The trunk was no exception. Jannine  was extremely excited in discussing her vision and proposed plan for restoring the trunk. The initial cost estimate for the restoration was $1,100 with a down payment of $500 to commence the work, with an estimated completion by the beginning of May.   In April, Jannine  informed us that due to a recent move to a new warehouse-studio coupled with certain project-scheduling conflicts,  she wouldn't be able to commence work on the trunk until  May.  She also informed us that she had been hunting down certain hard-to-find parts for the trunk that she was in the process of obtaining.  Once the work commenced,  Jannine provided us with periodic updates and inquiries as to proceeding with certain treatments.  We also asked her to take on the interior of the trunk, which was not part of the initial scope.
The trunk was finally ready on August 5, 2013.  The only way to  truly do Jannine's work justice would be to include pictures of the restoration. To cite just a few of  her  fixes: the embossed metal was beautifully enameled to bring out the detail, the wood slats were completely restored and varnished, the leather handles were replaced, the locking mechanism was painstakingly replicated to a functional locking one, the interior tray was completely repaired,  the trunk manufacturer sticker was uncovered and preserved inside the lid and the rolling wheels were replaced. Hands down, absolutely remarkable and well above and beyond our expectations... not to mention, well worth the wait. We trusted Jannine's judgment and recommendations from beginning to end and we can't say enough about her incredible and meticulous attention to detail.   Her personal touches and the extent she went to locate and/or replicate parts is  amazing. The additional work and hard-to-find parts cost us an additional $400,  but considering the unbelievable beauty and old-world craftsmanship involved, well worth the price.   Thank you Jannine.
