    Choice Home Warranty
Proformance Heat and Air was the company sent by Choice Home Warranty. Ezra Masson was the tech. I was kept well informed on his arrival by his Proformance team. He arrived on time and was very professional. He had the problem taken care of quickly as he knew what the problem was by his past knowledge and experience of the problem. I recommend this company and would use them in the future.

I was not real happy. It was the individual technician -- you get a good one you are okay, you get a bad one...those boys did not do what they were supposed to do because I called another company about four months later to have the ducts and air vents cleaned. Part of that service was they took the air handler apart to clean it and it was just absolutely filthy so they never did service it like they were supposed to. I paid for  a contract to have it serviced annually. They called the other day to come out here and I said I did not think so. I was not too keen on them because they did not do what they were supposed to do. I left a message and the guy called me back within 15 minutes, which doesn't happen. He was on the road, called me, said he would call me at such and such a time, and he did. I have a small house in town that they did some repair work on too. I signed up for contracts on both of them. The guy that did the repair was good. First he tried to sell me a whole new unit and I said that was out.   He said they could try to repair it -- no guarantees -- and he repaired it. I signed up in November of 2015 and then they had a repair in February 2016. The first time they came out it was two young boys flapping their lips and not paying attention to what they were doing. The second guy was 35-40'ish and he was very good. So it is hard to say. The annual service thing is cr*ppy, but the repair was a good job. The price of the contract was $180 for two services. They claim you don't have to do them both in the same year -- you can spread them out for however long. Their pricing was good. They call you back right away and were punctual.

    American Home Shield Home Warranty
In both cases, the repair was less than satisfactory, but this had more to do with the local contractors they sent rather than the company itself.
The way home warranties work is that you call them ... they send a preferred provider.  For the provider to do the work, you pay a co-pay.  In principle, the rest of the work is covered by the warranty. In practice, many of the MOST COMMON repairs are specifically excluded by the warranty.
In the case of our well pump, the contractor fixed the wrong well (we have two). The problem we called about was not addressed.
In the case of the air conditioning, the contractor told us we needed a special thermostat, which he did not have.  However, later, the warranty company called us to say "why did you refuse the thermostat that was on the truck?". In the end, we simply replaced the thermostat ourselves.

My In-Laws were here visiting from Florida and the upper A/C went out, humid days and nights. My husband called on his way to work and promptly called me to tell me they would be there after lunch. THEY WERE....
He replaced the part we needed and we were chilling on the 2nd floor again.
He also had the motor for the unit if it happened to be that.....which was a great thing to have the parts we may have needed.

    Mike Bertie Heating & Air
During my regular annual service with another company, they found my refrigerant coils in the air handler were leaking and needed replacement. The estimate was high and I was told that the unit was no longer under warranty (10 yr warranty and unit is 6.5 yrs). I told them I would contact the manufacturer (Goodman) to get the problem solved (no luck as of yet). In the meantime, the A/C ran out of freon on a hot Saturday (of course). I decided to try another service company for a better price and better service. Found Mike Bertie on Angie's List and called on Monday morning. Described the problem to Mike and, although very busy, he said he would make me his last call of the day. Sure enough, he came just before 8 pm and got the info he needed to order the parts. Since it was so hot (spring heat wave) I talked with him about filling the system with freon and take my chances that not too much would be lost before he could return to install the new coils. He agreed, and by flashlight filled the system - it was dead empty. Later that week the part came in and we scheduled the job for Monday. His crew arrived early that day and did a very professional installation of the new parts. Luckily, I lost no freon in the interim and my A/C was again working fine.
Although the repair cost was not cheap, Mike easily saved me hundreds of dollars and I am confident both he and his crew are professional and know their stuff. My experience is that he goes 'above and beyond' what it takes to get the job done. I have no such confidence in the Goodman company. I am still pursuing getting warranty reimbursement for the parts.

I was in Gainesville and was able to pick up the part he needed so he could fix it right away - saved him a trip to Gainesville and me from waiting another day for A/C in August.

Annual service contract would be more than my previous provider.
