I arrived about 15 min. early to fill out paperwork. I was called immediately to his office (no wait). His nurse took some more medical history and I saw Dr. John O'Connel MD. He ordered x-rays which were done on the spot and evaluated. The doctor was easy to talk to and he answered all my questions. He showed me the x-rays and expained them to me. He ordered Physical Therapy which is ongoing. After only one session of PT I have noticed a significant improvement in my condition. I would reccommend this doctor and the Cleveland Clinic to anyone.

After being diagnosed and x-rayed, Dr. Kurland concluded that I had a grade 2 sprain ankle with no fracture. He recommended wearing a boot for two weeks with crutches without putting any pressure to my foot and then two weeks of physical therapy in his own office. I contacted my uncle (out of state) who has been an orthopedist for 30 years specializing in joints and sports injuries about Dr. Kurland's recommendation. My uncle did not agree and he recommended that I put light pressure and start exercising my ankle right away to make sure that my tendon doesn't get stiff otherwise I will need therapy, but it is important to keep on flat surface. After 7 days, I was walking fine, the swelling went down, and just a little bit on my bruise was showing. A week went by and I returned to Dr. Kurland for a check-up. He was obviously upset that I was walking and he made a comment that I'm not superman and that I should be wearing that boot for another 3 weeks and then 6 weeks of physical therapy in his office. I told him that I was ready to go back to work (pilot). He then said I was high risk of DVT (blood clot). He said i was 3% risk vs normal person at 2%. He made me go see a vein specialist to make sure I was ok to fly. The vein specialist thought this was excessive and signed my release. Dr. Kurland released me to work with an aircast which of course my company did not accept. Remember, I'm fine at this point and can actually jog. At this point, his office staff was rude each time I called to speak to Dr. Kurland about releasing me to work. After threatening him that my next call would be my lawyer and stating the facts that he was basically "milking" my workers comp benefits, I contacted my workers comp agent and I went to see another orthopedist in Margate. They x-rayed my ankle again, did some test and he released me back to work.
In my opinion, Dr. Kurland tried to take advantage of my workers comp benefits and the use of his physical therapy side business. Shame on him. Beware. His office staff was not very friendly and polite from the first time I called to make an appointment.

He is a very good doctor. He has done a great job with both of our care. We have total confidence in him. He has performed two hip surgeries for my husband and he would not see anyone else. You would never know that my husband has even had surgery. Dr. Kurland is a perfectionist. He is a very good communicator. He explains everything and gives you time to weigh your options.

He listens to you. The effectiveness of treatment, communication, and punctuality are great. The staff friendliness and office environment are great as well. I will continue to use him in the future.

Very good examination. I thought I needed surgery. He said I did not. Now I'm glad. Because the knee has improved without the surgery.
