Deck Building reviews in Homestead

On 10/22/2014 I bought a Big Deal which was to include $4500 of landscape or deck work.  The price was $1359 for labor with me paying for the materials.   On 10/28/2014 Raymond Varela (accompanied by Mirtha) came to my home and gave me an estimate for some landscaping as well as for the deck repair. I decided to have the deck redone. He said he could do the deck for $3900 /or in 4 eight hour days.  He left saying he would "have to see when the deck guy could work".  In November I was asked for my contact information.  I heard nothing then until December.  "Al" said he could do the deck in 2 weekends starting 12/13/2014 and ending 12/21/14.  He arrived 12:30 PM on the 13th. First he stated "Yes, I can do the job for $4500 then later said it would cost "extra" because of the work involved in doing some wood replacement.  I didn't reply.  He did some sanding on the floor, leaving several times stating he was "having trouble finding the right sandpaper".  He left at 5:30PM and returned the following day accompanied by a female.  He sanded one french door and started one board on a second door.  The lady put blue painters tape around the windows in the doors.  Al then explained to me that I should really have the doors and floors stripped.  He said the "cost would be more but the outcome would be much nicer".  So I gave him a check for $441.86 and he left in the early afternoon supposedly to buy materials.  He promised to bring me a "detailed list" of the materials I bought.  He said he would be back 12/19/2014.   He was a no call/no show on the 19th.  On 12/20 I got a call  saying that he guessed someone had "dropped the ball and no one had called me.  The truck for hauling supplies had broken down".  He would return 12/26/2014.  I was going to be out of town and I called back and asked that the work resume on 1/05/15.  On 1/08/15 I got a call from Raymond saying "everyone" had been sick.  On 1/09/2015 I texted Raymond saying they could work any weekday.  On 1/23/2015, I called the company asking for the work to be done.  Raymond said "I will send someone next Thursday to finish the job."  No one showed up on 1/29/2015.  I called in the afternoon and was told by Raymond that someone would "be there tomorrow morning I promise".  No one showed the next day.  I texted Raymond on 1/31/2015 and pleaded with him to send someone to complete the work.  I heard back via text on 2/2/2015.."I will have someone there 2/5/2015.  I texted back again requesting a list of the materials.  On 2/5/2015 no one came,  Raymond called on 2/6/2015 and said his"guy called out sick yesterday and today and" and he "would send him Monday".  No one came on Monday.   I called on 2/11/2015 and got no reply  I called again on 2/12/2015.  Raymond texted back "Will be there tomorrow".  On 2/13/2015, when no one showed up I called..Al finally arrived at 11:45 AM but with no list of materials that I had been asking for.  He said he "couldn't find my work order" but said he would ask Mirtha to send me the list.  He also stated that he had "another job" so he could only work on weekends.   I asked him if he was going to start with cutting wood (I wanted a chance to put fans on to pull vapors away from the house as I did not want the vapors to harm my birds).  He said yes, but the next thing I knew I was smelling heavy vapor fumes!!!  He worked with chemicals on the doors and floor.  He washed the doors off with a hose blowing loose stain particles all over the painted wall and doors he was finishing.  A white powder was on the gate, outside step and deck floor.  The last thing he did was cut a foot square hole in the deck floor and then left without a word to me!
Update 3/25/15   At this time the wood repair on the deck, the sanding of the doors and floor and the stripping of the floor is not complete.  The rebuilt step is half the size of the original, even though I paid for sufficient supplies to rebuild the step of the same size. (At this time the doggy door opens to a drop to the ground!!)   No finish/stain has been applied.

The project went very very well. I was pleased with the results. I have had a small problem with leakage in the roof of the workshop area and they are working to solve that problem. They stand behind their work and maintain excellent communication. They are very punctual. At the end of every day they clean up nicely. The owner Mr. Cohen communicated with me in person numerous times throughout the project. Initially, the price of this project sounded high, but after seeing the quality of materials and getting other bids I realize this was very reasonable for the quality of work and materials.

Vendor gave me tow sites to visit where vendor had done the instllation.  I was very impressed with the work.  The owners give very high marks to AlumiCenter and the owner, Juan Cohen.  I like the owner.  He is very responsive and has come to my location twice in the course of giving mee an estimate in this project.  Very responsive.

    • Toward the end of May 2012, I contacted Alumicenter via their website to inquire on the price of an Aluminum porch. I already knew the dimensions based on quotes from several other contractors who visited my home. An employee of the company contacted me the same day and we setup an appointment for someone to come out and see the property. I had to re-schedule the first meeting due to some circumstances out of my control. The company changed the meeting for the following week.

The representative that came over to my home was Juan Cohen. Juan is the owner of Alumicenter. He arrived on-time and was prepared to take measurements of the area. Juan took notes of the area and measured it. He told me that I will have an emailed quote sent to me later that night. This is perfect as I am 100% attached to my iphone and email works best to communicate with me. As promised, the quote arrived later that night. I was pleasantly surprised to see that he had sent two quotes. One for the roofing I wanted and another for the screened-in version. My wife and I had wanted to do the screen but didn't ask Juan because the other contractors were pricing it outside of our price range. To our delight, Juan's screened-in quote was not as high as the others. Matter of fact, it was towards the top of our spending budget whereas all others were nearly $500 - $700 over our budget. We decided to go with the screened enclosure!

    • Juan submitted all the paperwork to the city for permitting. Since I live in a gated, Lennar community, I had to get my HOA's approval. Juan provided all the forms and Miami-Dade Approvals I needed to include an architectural rendering of the porch. It was approved with no issues because all the paperwork was complete and thorough. The permit was issued and the inspection of the foundation passed with no issues. This gave way to concrete pouring and actual structure build. I was expecting to find a construction site once I arrived home. However, Juan and his people cleaned up after themselves and ensured that they did not damage the vegetation nor destroy my grass. You could hardly tell that a crew had been working there. It was excellent! The concrete guys showed up 15 mins EARLY! This is great! They went right to work and my foundation was poured in less than 2 hours. The concrete took three days to hardened. Once that was hardened, Juan began to work on the construction of the enclosure.
    • Juan and his crew took two days to build the enclosure. They always arrive on time or earlier and went straight to work. No cafesito breaks! It was truly a pleasure seeing quality work being done by a contractor. The crew was proficient in their task and you can tell that this wasn't their first time doing it. The quality of the build was superb and the materials were new and definitely not old stock. After the work was done, Juan came over and walked me through the construction of the enclosure. He climbed ladders with me to show me the roof and show me how it was waterproof.
    • He showed me little extras that he incorporated to make the structure stronger. The bolts he used were higher grade and tensile strength than those required by the plans. I appreciated this! Overall, the enclosure looks fantastic! I am a perfectionist and I looked at every single nook and cranny looking for defects or oddities. I couldn't find any.. Juan has excellent customer service skills and superb construction experience. He answers all emails immediately! ((I emailed him over 40 times, yes, I am a perfectionist and look at the details!)) He ensured all my questions were answered and went over and beyond my expectations. Well, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves! I absolutely recommend Alumicenter for your enclosure project! BTW, Juan also installs hurricane shutters. My home came with shutters, if not, I would have had Juan install those too! A+

When Mark Addison, the owner, came out to give me an estimate, we looked at my back yard and we discussed what I wanted in a porch.  He seemed very knowledgeable about his craft and was very responsive to my wishes. His estimate included building a larger porch at a slightly lower cost than the competitors. I also wanted skylights and he made some placement suggestion in the roof that resulted in plenty of sunlight flooding the porch. He is also licensed and insured, while some of the others were not.
I believe he uses sub-contractors exclusively and this substantially delayed the project while he waited for them to finish other jobs. I also had concerns over not being kept informed about the delays. After I told him that I needed him to communicate better he did so. I think he was a little apologetic about the lack of communication because he poured, at no additional cost, a concrete slab for my garbage cans. (Now I can park my car in the garage where it belongs!)
All told it was not a perfect experience but the resulting porch was worth the wait.

Brian gave me an estimate and then took me to see another job that he had just completed and I was pleased with the work. I was ready to hire him until I received two additional estimates. Subsequently I found this company's prices to be too high and decided to use someone else. However, if the price had been better I would have definitely used Venetian Builders.
