You don't need a computer, which I was happy about because I only have a laptop.  I work from home so the basic plan was more economical for my needs.

  • Hotwire made a deal with our homeowners association to provide cable, internet and phone service. Individually we did not have a choice.

    They installed the service in our house a few weeks ago. While the internet and phone service have been fine (no problems and they both work well - the internet is actually faster than promised), the TV service is a nightmare. We experience glitches while watching shows (skips and pixellated sections), and at times it just stops working.

    They are responsive and mostly punctual. When we complain they send someone to the house and they usually show up when they say they will. But they have repeatedly failed to fix the problem. They have been to our house at least 6 times. On other occasions we called the customer service number and were told to reboot the set top box, a process that takes 10-20 minutes and works about half the time.

    The problem appears to be that they have to switch the digital signal to run on the coaxial cable that was installed in our house when it was built (1997), and then it has to switch back to digital for the set top box. Rather than run new cable (Cat5 Ethernet), they keep tweaking the system to see if they can make it work.

    When Hotwire sold this service to our HOA, they did not tell us it would not work well on the existing cable in our homes. Had they told us, as you can imagine, our HOA might have decided not to make the deal. Or perhaps we could have insisted on them rewiring our houses as a part of the install.

    Supposedly they will come to the house at the end of this week to finally install the correct cables. The manager acted like he was doing us a favor by agreeing to do this.

    As some history, we initially had Comcast and their TV service was terrible. We switched to DirecTV which worked pretty well. If I had an option I would choose DirecTV over Hotwire or Comcast. If they don't get the TV service working we will go back to DirecTV (we haven't cancelled the account yet) and we will demand compensation for the amount that comes from our HOA dues. I'm not a class action lawyer, but I am willing to learn. :-)

    By the way, I listed $7000 as the price we paid because this service will cost us approximately $100/month for the next 7 years.

  • Set at 78degrees, thermostat reads 78 degrees and a/c technican thermostat reads 71 degrees causing a/c to run constantly, moisture on a/c and mold developed.
