The facility is huge; much bigger than most other places I've been. There is a great kids program, and a simultaneous adult program. All of the kids that are involved are REALLY into judo and the instructor keeps them engaged.
There is a mix of adults. Male, female, college age, middle aged, and retiree. Male and female instructors. Really a great environment.

After training at another local martial arts club for a couple of years there was a major breakdown in the club and some of the instructors and most of the students left and formed this new club.
Gainesville Judo, or TAJMA (The Academies of Japanese Martial Arts), is a judo school currently giving classes at the Unified Training Center on University Ave. in Gainesville. It is easily the best value in town for martial arts training at $50 per month. There is also a family and student rate.
Training is excellent. The head instructor is a former international level competitor with tons of wins and contacts around the world. There are several other black belt "instructors" that also help run the classes. There is a pretty awesome club environment with a lot of people that really seem to want to help each other get to the next level in their training. There is also a stream of guest instructors that has included several olympians and international competitors.
The club is non-profit, and has a program to give disadvantaged local kids. All the instructors are volunteers. It's a really good club and I recommend giving it a try.

Training here was fun at first. It is a small club that was run out of a community center. The club searched for leadership for a long time, with various senior students running the instruction side of things, Richard Crenshaw, the karate instructor, collecting the money, and Ron Chapman, the senior "instructor" only popping in once every few months for about an hour.
Judo is taught by Ron Chapman. He is listed with the national judo association as a 4th degree black belt, but advertises himself as 8th degree black belt. He is a decent instructor but not terribly dynamic or personable. He has been instructing on and off for many years in Gainesville.
Karate is taught by Richard Crenshaw. He has been promoted to 6th degree black belt by his friend Ron Chapman, but to my knowledge has no pedigree. He is an absolutely terrible teacher when it comes to children and is extremely slow to promote anyone. He has no patience and just isn't cut out for it. He thinks a lot of himself and his abilities. The best way to describe him is Barney Fife with a crappy attitude.
If you are searching for martial arts clubs in Gainesville there are better places, but this one isn't terrible. There are some good people involved as students and co-instructors, and you will be fine if you deal with them.
