  • I'm afraid it did not go so well.  
    First, after contacting several shops that specialized in automobile transmission repairs, including Wiygul, I chose Wiygul because of its Angie's List listing and because the receptionist said that Wiygul would provide a free assessment of the problem.  Upon arrival I was informed that in fact there would be a charge for such an assessment -- $116 (the other shops with whom I checked said they would charge from $69 to $120) but that the amount would be rolled into the price of whatever work needed to be done.  Although somewhat disconcerting, I was there, and somewhat concerned that the transmission was on the verge of giving out completely, and therefore decided to proceed.  Wiygul personnel apologized, said that the receptionist with whom I spoke was new, and that it was hoped that I didn't have the impression that Wiygul was engaging in "bait and switch," and finally that it was their hope that I was there was because of Wiygul's good reviews.  I took all of this on board and said to proceed. 
    Second, Wiygul determined that the reason for the increasing difficulty in shifting my automatic transmission between reverse, drive and park was due to a rusty shifter cable, the end of which apparentlysnapped off during the inspection.  They replaced it for $746, over $100 more than I later found out that the dealership from which I purchased the car would have charged.  My experience with dealerships is that they typically charge more than independent shops like Wiygul.  So, I was a bit surprised.  That said, and to be fair, the shifter cable appears to have been installed properly.  
    Third, and most relevant to this review, Wiygul assessed that the transmission was leaking.  Although an old but well maintained car, not entirely unexpected (although this particularly model is recognized as being a long-lasting workhorse).  I asked Wiygul if it made sense to first check for leaks.  It was recommended that, rather than chasing such a leak at additional expense, I instead consider  replacing the transmission, at a cost of either $2925 for a used transmission with a life-time warranty on the part only, or $4,453 for a Jasper transmission assembly with a three-year warranty on parts and any labor involved if the transmission needed to be replaced during that time.  The latter, more expensive assembly was recommended because of the extended warranty.
    Given the cost, I sought a second opinion, at my original dealership, which I have not sought service from since my warranty expired years ago.  They recommended checking for leaks first, which they did.  They found no leaks, but rather a transmission that had been overfilled with fluid, and which appropriately was draining off, via the "breather valve," as a transmission apparently is designed to do when overfilled.  
    Bottom line, my impression is that Wiygul in this particular case appeared too anxious to sell me a new transmission, without first more carefully and appropriately checking for leaks.  $4,453 is a lot of money, and I am glad I didn't have to spend it.  In good conscious, I could not recommend this shop to my fellow Angies List devotees, at least if they are seeking automobile transmission assistance.

  • I love supporting small business owners.  This is a mom and pop shop that's been in business for 20 years.  They genuinely care about their customers.  More importantly, they know their stuff!  The owner is an ASE certified master mechanic, the shop does everything but body work (including state and emission inspections), and they do NOT recommend or perform unnecessary repairs or maintenance (unlike the dealerships I've used in the past).  Convenient location, great service, reasonable prices.

  • Excellent. Scheduling was fine and with advance notice they provided a loaner car because I live far enough away so my car was in mid-morning and I didn't want to drive to and from Rockville during rush hour. I was kept informed of everything and went the next day to pick up my car, which felt much better when I picked it up. Easy, professional, friendly, specialize in Hondas and Toyotas and are very knowledgeable and accommodating.
    I have been going to this shop since I purchased my used Honda (they did the pre-purchase inspection) and they have always been excellent and are like extended family. Well worth the distance I drive to them and I highly recommend them.
    Note that they are closed on Fridays to provide quality of life for their employees, but they work well around this so it has never been a problem for me and probably aids in the attentiveness of the staff when they are open.

  • I purchased the deal, spoke with Samantha on the phone to set up the appointment, and was able to have the car's owner drop off the car within 20 minutes while still using the voucher I purchased. Shortly thereafter, Marty called with a full description of the car's maintenance needs and things I needed to consider. He was very clear, concise, and personable on the phone and offered to mail the report to me so I didn't have to come in to the shop. All-in-all my experience was phenomenal. It's rare to find an auto shop where you can feel comfortable there isn't anything shady going on. I will not hesitate to use them again.

  • Cherrydale motors is my go-to place for car repairs and oil changes. They have given me decent rates and I've never felt like they tried to up sell me with other unnecessary services. It is better to try to make an appointment or call ahead as sometimes they are full.

  • I LOVE AUTO SCANDIA! They have serviced my 2006 BMW in the past.  When I recently took the car to Wiygul for the state inspection and they came back with $1200 worth of work just to get it to pas inspection we were suspicious.  After comparing the Angie's List reviews I decided to take the car to Auto Scandia for a second opinion.  The car passed inspection without difficulty.  According to the BMW service coordinator their inspector is "meticulous."  Auto Scandia didn't even charge me for the repeat inspection.  They are wonderful.   I will only be going to Auto Scandia from now on.

  • Make sure you call for any appointment to bring your car by for an inspection, he will  then set up another time to bring your car back to have the work performed. It is a small station. Call before you go by. I was very happy with his demeanor and his work.

  • Murray's Auto Clinics has excellent service. I have warmth in my van especially its freezing cold. They are very prompt. They are very professional. They are able to analyze and fix the problem. Their pricing was good. I have used them in the past and will continue using them because I can compare them and they are hard to believe more excellent.

  • My wife's 2004 Subaru Forester was blindsided in a hit and run, and we had it repaired at a body shop chosen by our insurer. While it was being fixed, my wife drove my car, and decided that it was now her car. So, I was stuff with old Subaru, which she had neglicted to service or repair for years. I bought the Big Deal for $40 for inspection and oil change, and told Gili's I was deciding whether to keep the car or trade it in. They did a thorough inspection, and explained all of the necessary repairs, the exact costs to perform them and an analysis of whether they were truly necessary. They also told me that with only 80,000 miles on the odometer and the engine and transmission being in good shape, that I was likely to be able to drive it to well over 100,000 miles. They did an good job and it drives great. I then met with Gili the owner who runs the body shop attached the automotive repair..He showed me where the insurance company-recommended body shop skimped on the paint job...reviewed the car's body with me, and worked out a reasonable price to replace a rusting rear panel, touch up the paint, and buff the body with a high speed buffer. It was abut $1,000. He told me because I live and work in DC I should have anything done to the bumper, because it would likely get minor scratches and dents immediately from being parked on the street.
    It's a good reliable shop with experienced mechanics and bodymen.

  • As I've noted above, the car was making sounds I've never heard before.  Naturally, I suspected the worst and so I drove it early in the morning over to Autoscandia in Herndon.
    They took me in right away.  Then, the expert, Mr. Louis Panameno, checked out the car.  Then, to make sure that he was hearing the same sounds I was hearing, we went for a drive together.  Then he put up the car again on the lifter.  He called me in and showed me what was causing the sounds.  He advised, after carefully checking everything, that it was less serious than it appeared.  If I could live with the sound, I could save money by simply waiting for a year or so before attending to the issue.
    What a relief!
    Then, as we talked together, he checked all the fluids in the car, including ones that don't show up on the car's dashboard window.  He filled up ones that were low.  He put a sticker on the car to indicate when I would next have to bring in the car for a check-up.
    Finally, the bill.  It was ZERO. 
    Attentive service, sage advice, free top-up of fluids, and no bill.
    I recommend that auto owners who want the best possible service drive over to Herndon and visit Autoscandia.  If you are like me, you'll be customers for life.
