  • new furnace install was the best with only I leak which was fixed right away. Windows did not have big sill as before and they missed a couple of areas painting. waited a couple of days for the painter to come. the worst and still is not fixed is the gutters. They leaked from between the gutter and the house in front and the pitch was not right. the back has a problem in the corner which they were told before they started and it still leaks and floods in the corner. when i call they say we will take care of it and the owner comes looks and smiles and says ok we will get someone here to take of it. I HAVE BEEN HEARING THE SAME THING FOR 4 YEARS NOW AND I AM STILL WAITING. I always called in spring giving them all that time to come. STILL WAITING. I NOW GIVE UP!!!!!!

  • Mary Lou, of Better Homes was always there to make sure the job was going as planned. She not only called, but also came on site numerous times. Her attention to detail was something rarely seen today. I would not hesitate to recommend her business for any home improvement projects. I rated B on punctuality because of the late start, however taking into consideration the number of rainy days I can understand why her schedule was delayed. In spite of that it is rare to find a contractor so personally invested in being sure, I as a customer, was completed satisfied with the work done. Excellent work and effort.

  • Excellent work, very responsive. As the siding was going on, we found a problem area under a door sill - Jim offered to fix it. Instead, had him convert that door (right next to a sliding door to the porch) into a wall with a window. Came by regularly to see how the work was progressing. Gave several options on gutter guards, found some sill damage at foundation, did the work as part of the original package.

  • The whole process from Jay coming to our home with the quote, to the guys showing up to do the roof went extremely smooth. Within days we had a new roof. The crew was very nice, they did our roof in about 7 hours from setup to cleanup. They cleaned up really well and were very polite. The office staff was exceptional, answering all of our questions. Price was excellent and we are very happy with our new roof, it looks great! Coming from a very picky person such as myself, I highly recommend this company.

  • Showed up on time, very courteous and professional.  Quick and were very clean.  They provided me with an explanation of the service they were going to provide, updated me throughout the install and summarized everything before the left.

  • Louie was great from start to finish. The job was completed in two and a half days exactly what was quoted. Louie's team was punctual and very professional. They were careful to drape work areas and clean up completely at the end of the day. For no extra cost Louie rebuilt our chimney. Louie made sure were very satisfied with the work. We paid exactly what we were quoted with extras. Very positive experience!

  • I just want to say right up front that it's probably possible that there's another company out there who can do an equally good job on a roof.  But you won't find anyone who can do a better job.  I am 100% convinced there is no better roofing company out there than D J Hall Roofing.

After I initially contacted Dan, he responded very quickly with a phone call, and then was out the next day to write up an estimate. Throughout the entire preliminary process we communicated mostly through email (my preference).  Whenever I would email him, I would usually have a response back within an hour or two.  Awesome!

One of the things I wanted beyond shingles and gutters was to have my rake edges replaced because of carpenter bee damage.  Dan recommended a much less expensive (but equally effective) way to make the rake edges look like new than what I proposed.  I really appreciated that.  It made me feel much more comfortable going forward, that I wouldn't be taken advantage of.

After we decided to go with them, Dan came out to my home a few days before and introduced me his crew's foreman, and to go over all of the particulars.  I really appreciated that too, so I knew who I could talk to about any concerns once the work began on the roof.

The crew could not have been more professional.  What a great experience, and they did phenomenal work.  I was out there watching most of it, and several times a day the foreman would come over and ask if I had any questions or concerns.  I was amazed at how efficiently they worked.

Prior to having my roof done, I never really paid attention to other roofs.  Now I'm obsessed with looking at other roofs!  And I can tell you that DJ Hall Roofing performs small (but important) details on their roofs that I don't see on a lot of other roofs, and that were not offered to me from other companies that gave me estimates.

One of the biggest concerns with having someone do a big job like a roof is that you are at their mercy.  If they start the job and get up there and tell you that you need to now replace all the plywood (increasing the cost by a LOT), what can you do? There was none of that with this company.  He came out, gave me an estimate, and did an honest job.  I can't say enough good things about them.

One last thing.  I gave an A rating for price.  That was based on the quality of work, the professionalism of the company, and all of those small details that they took care of.  My guess is you can get another company to do good work for less money. But I don't believe you can get a company to do the same exact job, for less money.  That to me is key.

  • The time had come to replace the roof, the third and last roof on our house had been installed in 1974.  In addition to reroofing our large 2 family, 3 floor (with full attic) house with 50 foot front porch, sun porch, and small back porch, there is also a stand alone 2 car garage.  I obtained 5 bids from various contractors, a few of whom I researched here on Angie's List.  I went with the lowest bid, also weighing the excellent reviews M&J Roofing received from this site.  (And yet I wonder why our house cost so much more than any other house I see done here by this vendor on Angie's List?)
I really wanted to be able to give these guys an "A."  I liked them very much BUT they used a rather inexperienced foreman for this major job who did not seem up to the task.  They submitted the bid on a Friday afternoon in August and I accepted immediately as I wanted to get it done, which surprised Lou.  I probably should have negotiated a bit more.   Lou called the following Sunday evening to say they could start the Tuesday following Labor Day, which pleased me, as I was glad to see them act so promptly.  However, when doing a really big job like this, be sure the guy you meet with will be the foreman on the job.  The brothers, either Lou or Jason, appeared on site almost every day for an hour or so, but they were not supervising the job on site every hour of the day.
For example, our house had been sided in aluminum in the late 50s or early 60s, before we bought it.  So when they ripped the 3 old roofs off, there was a gap between the siding and the new roof, which was very very obvious, all over the house.  I mentioned it to the foreman immediately, and suggested the gap job be done the same day the trim guy was on site, in order to get trim applied to the gaps, the way my neighbors had done when they had their roofs ripped off and new board and roofing installed, providing them with actual illustrations right on my street.  Jason, the other brother, came and met with me and gave me reasons why they could not do it.  But then I thought about it overnight, and I finally insisted upon trim being installed.  They mentioned a cost of $500 extra but I ended up paying the agreed upon price in the estimate, because this is something they should have foreseen.  Mine cannot be the first old house with siding they have done, nor the last.
We have a very small yard which is completely planted with ornamental shrubs & trees and they did a pretty good job of taking care of the plants during the tear off.  It was an enormously dirty and messy job with literally tons of debris.  I covered everything I could before hand, both in the attic and in the yard, and they cleaned up the yard very nicely afterwards.  But they ripped up the lawn in delivering only one gigantic dumpster instead of the smaller ones on rubber wheels that they had talked about at the beginning of the job.  They really should have gotten smaller, rubber wheeled dumpsters.   I was pretty upset, so they came in with a truck load of topsoil and reseeded the lawn as well.  They told me what it cost, but did not charge me extra for it.
My final caveat is that they did not use the GAF Timberline roof caps, but a different GAF product instead.  I mentioned it to them at the time, and Lou said the GAF Timberline ones stick up too much and I could have them if I really wanted but since the others were there, I just said go ahead and use them, I wanted the job to be finished.
On the whole, Lou & Jason were responsive to my concerns and did a good job in 9 days.  Their guys were hard working and courteous, so I bought them lunch and provided plenty of beverages every day.  But again I must emphasize, someone with more experience should have been the foreman on the job.  It was a big job - not as big as they originally thought as there were a dozen packages of roofing material left over  (they did leave one for me for repairs).  And the price was higher than I would have liked but it was what I agreed to at the beginning.
Two of the GAF Certified guys who are on Angie's List gave me written estimates that were $2400 to $5400 higher in price - which included the Angie's List discount, but without the Golden Seal Certificate, which cost extra.  So I saved some money.  But I had to supervise and negotiate the whole way which should not have been necessary.  The house looks very nice and hopefully this new roof will last at least as long as the one we had installed in 1974.

  • I cannot provide details because Dennis Bellamy (the owner) threatened us with a lawsuit if we provide information on Angies List. He intimidated us to into removing a review that we did post.  If anyone wishes to contact us, we can be reached at 860-605-4145.
We would never hire him again.

  • Things went quite well. We got three estimates. One was way high and we eliminated them. The other two were very close in estimates, but we went with the one who appeared to have a better (very good) guarantee. The salesman was quite knowledgeable and  was very pleasant to deal with. The office followed up on all aspects of the sale. The installers seemed very competent and appeared to do a very good job however they were there for 11 hours and we were told it would take about 4/5.
But, they did a great job and worked very hard all the time. We would definitely have them back.
