White Oak Building & Design, Inc
All of the decisions were spot on. Work was done to specs. The entire project was completed only a week or so late, but that was my fault. The work is top notch and the price incredibly competitive. They are also honest and don't pass on mark-up of kitchen cabinets, etc. They just charge for the labor. I would highly recommend them. Can show pictures if requested.

    Broadbent Construction
Paul Broadbent came out with sample materials;  he sketched out the proposal (as new stairs would be slightly modified, more than just replaced).  He put together the quote and within days we were scheduled.
Broadbent arrives on time, works throughout (even in the coldest temps!) and finishes the job on time.  We added a few things (he kindly brought lattice for the sides of the stairs if I was so interested; I hadn't thought of that!) so we added on a few hours work/$ (he quoted me an addtl amount on the spot for the "add-ons") and delivered beautifully.
Note: be sure to clarify who removes the "scraps" which in my case included c80" planks of wood, rotten carriage etc. We worked out an additional $ for that service (was minimal).
Will def use Broadbent again in the spring.

    J Pallarino Painting
James was very professional and cooperative. For a first time homeowner he was a very good guide. He sought input and provided advice but never pushed his own agenda. Used high quality material and had a very friendly and professional crew. Very clean, punctual and most importantly affordable. They did exactly what they had committed to do (probably more) in the budget we had decided.
We are very happy with his work since both the interior and exterior of our house looks wonderful!

It was one of the best vendor experiences we've ever had.  Kevin Williams (the company owner) was involved in every step of the process, from assessing the damage downstairs, to helping us work with the insurance company, to offering a reasonably priced solution for the upstairs windows and doors after we asked him about also doing that work for us, to coming into our house on a daily basis to do the work.  Kevin is the epitome of professionalism - friendly, honest, and hard-working.  And he's a fine craftsman.  Our windows and doors came out beautifully.  The french doors in particular... that's the first thing visitors see when they come into our house and we've had several people comment on them.  Kevin had two men from his crew do the work with him and they were terrific.  In terms of quality, responsiveness, and punctuality, I'd give Williams Construction an A+ if that grade was available.  And I'd be tempted to do the same for pricing, with an asterisk included.  Kevin is not the least expensive contractor available, but his entire crew is bonded, licensed, and insured (and that's also been the case with the couple tradesmen Kevin has recommended to us recently).  That seems increasingly difficult to find these days, and to me, it's not worth the sizable risk to consider doing it any other way.

It went beautifully. Kevin's men showed up on the day Kevin said they would be here. They worked diligently each day and could not have been kinder or more respectful to me and my family. We enjoyed having them at our house. The workmanship is outstanding. The job took longer than originally estimated by Kevin, but additional scope was added during the siding replacement. Some water damage was discovered on the sheeting behind siding that needed replacement. The siding replacement was done on a time and material basis. Kevin kept accurate records on the costs and the time of his men which made agreeing on the cost easy. The fact that his men worked hard each day also made agreeing on a price easy - we got our money's worth. Kevin and his men discussed several different options for installing a railing on our covered side porch. Kevin had one idea, and one of the men, Chris, had a different idea on how to anchor the support posts to the concrete slab on the porch. Kevin deferred to Chris's idea for fastening the posts to the concrete, demonstrating his trust in the experience and ideas of the crew he has working for him. It also turned out to be an excellent choice. The support posts are very solid, which was a concern of ours when the project started. Similarly, the team put a good amount of thought into the best way to attach the new staircase from the porch into the yard. They thought about details I would have no idea needed to be considered and their experience and expertise resulted in a wonderful product. The only snag in the project came with the window installation. The window manufacturer sized three of the windows incorrectly which delayed the completion of the window installation. Kevin explained what happened to me and took care of getting new windows as quickly as possible. I appreciated his constant and frank communication on the job.

    LDC Renovations Inc
The owner Robert Matturro of LDC Renovations, Inc. was a personal friend from a net work group and I took him at face value and even recommended him to my customers for roofing and carpentry (he said I kept him working all winter 2009/2010) and ?to repay me? Robert offered to ?rebuild a set of concrete steps/deck with a Timber Tech deck/steps at just his cost? this price was for the removal of all concrete, putting in proper footings, all pressure treated wood sub frame and then Timber Tech compost decking and hand rails, his estimate was for $2800 (plus a couple of dump runs @ $100 each) and the job would take 3 days. His proposal ?includes all labor and materials?. By day 4 he started building the deck sub frame and Friday finished half the decking (I had to put wood on the top to get into my home safely (it is still there 1/27/11) as he was ?not coming back until the following Wednesday?. Well he did not have a CT contractors license, he made the new deck over one foot bigger projecting into my walk way, he did not dig proper footing, he removed vinyl siding and wanted to charge me to re install it, was using ?Home Cheapo? decking not Timber Tech as stated in his proposal (half the cost), none of his joints or seams line up (looks like Ray Charles did this work and his guy who is a ?Master Carpenter, making $45 hr?), his guy was here maybe 30 hours (of the 35 he had in his proposal) and he wanted to ?add extra 12 hours? (that would have meant that his guy was her was here for 47 total hours and they never started before 9am and finished each day before 3?, he never pulled a Stamford, CT building permit (so no inspections), did not have a proper CT State home improvement contract giving me 3 days to cancel?just to name a few issues I had, and then came the other shoe, the cost when every thing was done would be over $6000.00 and that is if he ?he didn?t have any other issues? all the while he was saying ?I am not charging you for my time just my guy and materials After all this I find out he is not a licensed contractor in NY or CT (claiming 28 years in business), so I sat down with him and offered to let him keep some of the extra money I paid him and finish the deck/steps or ?tell me to do my worst? he told me I ?was ludicrous if I thought he was giving me any of my money back and if I didn?t pay him in full he would not finish? I fired him on the spot, I was going to have him arrested by Stamford PD for working with out a license but decided to just let it go. So I took him to small claims court and showed the judge he did not have a contractors licensed, the Stamford, CT building department stated ?all framing must be removed, cement removed and footing exposed to 36? below the frost line? (so the deck had to be cut out and the cement he poured (44 bags of cement) would have to be jack hammered out and proper footings dug and inspected) bottom line every thing he did would have to be removed and thrown out and the judge agreed and I won the $4575.00 I paid him but Robert never paid me (I was not surprised), but I filed a complaint with CT consumer protection and they will pay me out of a ?guaranty fund? for home owners that have just this type of scab contractors that do shotty work, and then go after Robert (they can revoke his license, attach his bank accounts and possible jail time). I took this man at his word and had I left him finish I might not have know what a joke of a job he did but I too am in the trades and he makes it sound like he is doing you a favor I left court thinking he must really believe this BS, but it is just that BS and really bad work. I have found a very good contractor who will do the work in the spring It is ok for Angie?s list to contact me for any reason regarding this report for copies of original estimate, pictures and ?Judgment of Disposition? showing I won the case in small claims court he still did not pay.

On 4/4/11 he made a "motion to re open" in the court claiming "James sued the wrong company......" the judge told him "I remember this case, you did a horrible job on this man's deck and it has to be replaced" he and his partner almost had to be "removed and held in contempt if they did not leave", he still did not pay me, so I contacted CT Consumer Protection and they have paid me the full amount,  CT State will go after this company and they must repay CT State.
In May of 2011 I pulled the proper permit, hired a "good Contractor" who had to remove every thing and re build my back steps, and on 6/14/11 the city of Stamford issued the "Certificate of Approval", so it took a year and so much aggravation to finally get my steps right by a real contractor, who knows how to do his job and keep his word.
If you hire this company you might get lucky or you could be treated the way I was (and he was a personal & professional friend

Nick and his team did an excellent job. He responded quickly to our initial inquiry and was very informative/honest in the options available to us. We mainly debated cheaper wood versus the more expensive but long lasting composite railings. We went with the composite and nick spent a couple of weeks sourcing the materials needed at the best price. They started the work on schedule and his team were punctual, extremely hard working and each evening after they finished they tidied up so that you would never know they had been there. The job was completed in a reasonable timeframe and the quality of workmanship was excellent. The guys even did some extra painting around the areas they had worked on which was very much appreciated. Nick came to inspect the work with us on completion and could not have been nicer. He genuinley seems keen to build longterm wrking relationships with his clients and given the work done we will certainly be using him again. Overall a great experience and we would highly recommend Vivona Construction to our friends.

This company rates A+++ from start to finish. The owner contacted me immediately after my initial call and was out within a day or two to give me an estimate. The price was great - much better than other quotes I received. The workers were friendly and professional. They worked hard from 8 to 5 every day - no strange disappearances or no shows. The kind employees helped me bring my groceries in one day, and another fixed our falling house antenna at no charge. The owner came by the house at least once a day, sometimes more, to check on the work and to see how things were going. The porch took about 4 days and looks beautiful - every last detail was attended to. It improved the look of our house tenfold. I can't recommend this company enough!!!
