    PL Mountzoures Contracting Inc
Peter Mountzoures of all trades I really like utilizing the service of Peter because he is one of the few contractors that I felt confident in performing the work on my late parents home without me following up right away. In addition, Peter replaced two windows that were on the second floor with ease, razed an old building, replaced the roof on the main dwelling, and plowed my late parents driveway when I requested. Peter is trustworthy and very professional. I highly recommend employing Peters services.

There were some delays in timing from both sides, and there was mutual agreement on the start date window. Once the work was started, it was about a week and 1/2 until completion. I (and my neighbors) were impressed with the prep work that Gene and his crew performed, masking and taping all windows, entrances, and areas abutting the sections to be stained. There were some problem areas with the new cedar boards, causing the wood to curl and peel up/off. Gene had a solution for the problem and you wouldn't know there had been any issues. The temps during the project were extremely hot and humid. One member of the crew showed up at 5:30am to get a head start before the heat set in and to keep the work on track. When finished with an area, Gene and his crew cleaned up the contrasting trim that had been oversprayed during the prior paint job. He did a great job on both the exterior and inside of our front door which is hand carved and not easily replaced. I don't think it looked that good when we bought the house! Gene shared tips on painting, since we decided to restain the decks ourselves. It's all the small things in addition to a quality job that make our experience with Top Coat such a positive one. We called all of the references that Gene provided to us. Each one had nothing but great things to say about him and the quality of the work done. For the record, I found the pricing to be "in the ballpark" not the highest and not the cheapest. If you define a good price as one that is fair and for which you get a quality job, then an A rating is deserved. We plan to use Top Coat again for additional interior projects.

Great! The work was done at probably the hottest part of a very hot summer but the crew showed up early to make sure that things got done. Gene took care of some imperfections in spots on the replaced siding. He gave me tips on the deck work that we chose to do ourselves and on painting a front door for our daughter. The final product looks terrific.

    Berk's Fine Painting LLC
Ok, It's spring and you're looking to have your house painted?  I have three words for you:  Hire this man!  He does everything he says he will and does it beautifully!

We interviewed five painters and chose Mr. Berk.  He was not the least expensive (nor the most), but he was clear and explicit on everything he would do.  He listed shutters, deck trim, porch railings and lamp posts.  Half way through the project, I decided to purchase new lights for the porches and three posts; the lights are bronze and the posts were black.  One of his painters took a bronze lamp to the paint store to match the color exactly.  Black posts and black railings are now bronze and match all the lights.

A large deck was a concern.  It was painted many years ago and repainted many times.  Power washing would never take off all the paint.  One of the painters we interviewed said we could only keep on painting.  Another offered to replace the surface boards with new ones which could then be stained....very expensive!  Mr. Berk just said, "No problem.  We can sand it off."  And he did.... at a very reasonable price.  Deck is now clear stained and the 30-year-old deck now looks new.

One end of the house had a moisture problem of which we knew nothing; it showed up only after the area was painted.  Mr. Berk sanded the entire end of the house bare, used small wedges beneath the clapboards to allow air to circulate. and primed and repainted  that end of the house.  No charge for the extra work and it was several days extra. We have had no trouble since.

The piece de resistance in this project is the crew.  A homeowner could not ask for nicer, more helpful workmen....and lots of them there every day, all day with Mr. Berk checking frequently.   I enjoyed having these guys around.

We would hire Mr. Berk again in a heartbeat.

    STRESS FREE SOLUTIONS HOME IMPROVEMENTS
They installed lighting and meticulously aligned the wood planks to accentuate the design of the deck.  Their carpentry skills are exceptional, adding fine details to construction and design.  They applied multiple coats of paint to the exterior of my house including hand staining the wood to ensure longevity of the planks.  They installed membranes to prevent moisture damage in my roof and siding. Their attention to detail is evident from the clean/neat seals around the windows to the alignment of the nails in the siding.  Mike Rivas met with me numerous times and provided recommendations that not only addressed issues of the immediate job but with foresight for future work that need to be performed and by any contractor.  Brian, David, Kevin, Tommy, Peter, and Steve are meticulous and very skilled.  My property has features that require some creativity in design and installation. The crew of Stress Free Solutions take care to think through each challenge and did a wonderful job. I've received many compliments on their work from friends, family, and other contractors.  The crew are very courteous and professional - they leave my property neat and clean after each day's work and at the end of the project.  I highly recommend Mike and his crew.  As a matter of fact, I've hired them again for another project!

    E & F Painting Service
Fabio is an excellent painter, taking great care to paint very professionally, arrive on time, work long hours, get the job done in a timely manner, cover all furniture and flooring to protect it from paint drips, and leave my house as clean as when he arrived, all for a very reasonable price.  He is respectful, polite and responsible and I would trust him to work alone in the house as well.  He is willing to travel quite a distance for job opportunities.

Craig was awesome to work with.  From the very beginning he was very responsive, and punctual.  I contacted him on a Thursday, he stopped by the house that Saturday (exactly when he said he would - a few minutes early as I recall) to get a sense of the scope of the job, and I had a detailed estimate first thing Monday morning.  He started the work the following Monday, right on time.  He was great about putting up plastic sheeting, and carefully removing lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, and vents.  The work on the ceilings took a little longer than expected because the existing plaster texture on the ceiling was too difficult to sand down, meaning that Craig had to gradually fill in the texture with successive layers of compound, and wait for it to dry in-between.  Craig was great about filling in imperfections as he went along.  This attention to detail really paid off, and the end result was well worth the extra time and effort, because the ceilings came out absolutely perfect.  Craig also did a great job with the wallpaper trim, and removing the floor-to-ceiling wallpaper in the half-bathroom, following it up with a layer of skim coat to make it ready to paint.  Once all the work was done, Craig was very good about cleaning up, which given the amount of plaster / plaster dust involved in the job is really saying something.  I would not hesitate to recommend Craig, and would definitely hire him again.

    Top Coat Painters
I contacted Top Coat and Gene got right back to me. I told him that I was interested in purchasing a house that was in really bad exterior condition and I needed an estimate for Painting the house ASAP. I requested a weekend estimate and he agreed to meet me at the desired time. He arrived on time looked at the house condition and immediately told me that the house would be better served by installing vinyl siding. Gene then provided me with the name of a company that provides siding and upon contacting them was able to receive an estimate in a very quick response. Even though I was not able to hire Top Coat this time I know that Gene will be the first person to call when I have a need for a painter in the future

It didn't work out very well.  He didn't do a very good job.  The painting was substandard.  The workmanship on the carpentry work was bad.  My deck looks terrible.  I had to repaint the whole thing again this year after having it done last year.  He was way over on his labor price.  I told him that he didn't put the hours that he said he would put in.  He took out his calculator and jacked up the rate to reach the same number.  He was recommended by a good friend of my wife because he had done a lot of work for them.  He had charged them over $100,000 for the work.  It was a lot of money.  He wanted the money upfront from me.  I'm a builder and I know the business.  I gave him $5000 to start, but he constantly kept asking for money.  If you're in business for long enough you have enough money to fall back on; you don't take the customer’s money upfront and do the job.  He ran out of primer so he kept on painting at places without the primer.  He was agitated every time I complained, so I kept my mouth shut.  I put primer myself and repainted some of it this year.  He didn't wash the roof properly, so I ended up washing it again.  He didn't do a very good job of it.  He missed a whole lot of it.  He had to buy a machine to do some work.  Then he came back not knowing how to run the machine.  That was funny.  Being a builder I asked him to do it in a certain way.  He had actually done it before, but I had to show him how to do it.  He did the ceiling, and I supervised a little bit of it.  The leak is pretty much invisible now.  Nobody would notice it.

    EARLY NEW ENGLAND RESTORATIONS INC
A great deal was done reasonably well. Unfortunately a great deal was NOT .  Within three months , in some cases less , the following began to show up : the stain and even the sealer came off random bits of floor and every threshold leading outside , the white paint which is in most rooms yellowed , the electric provided me w/dimming and flickering in my bedroom if I ever plugged in more than two bedside lamps and every plug in the basement other than ones for the washer/dryer blew out permanently and I can watch TV only because I've snaked an extra long extension cord from the 1st floor to the basement where the TV is , the top sashes of the $ 3,000 a piece custom windows do not lower - and I was not consulted about this and when I discovered it and protested I was told that in the 1700's the top sash did not lower which is NONSENSE - we have plenty of weather here in New England that makes it more than just convenient to be able to lower the top sash of a window - and we did back in the 18th century too , the window for the full beth downstairs , when viewed from the outside looks as though it was installed and painted forty years ago , not three : cracking peeling paint falling off all over the place ,  and though the water heating was discussed and I made it clear that I was willing to buy new equipment I was encouraged to keep an  " on demand " about which it can be said " You can demand . But it won't necessarily be given to you ."  Not having a reliable continuous source of hot water in a  New England winter when you have severe rheumatoid arthritis and a host of other health problems is SUCH a joy . The punch list I discussed REPEATEDLY with Brian Cooper , the owner of this company , was never gone through . Not even the first item : fixing splashes of paint , little blobs and so forth around the house . As for the generous splashes of paint on the window glass outside and in  , Mr. Cooper once again told me that this was the way things were done in the 1700s . My response once again was " Brian that just isn't so ."  Of course we are dealing with the guy who obliged me to move in FOUR months later than a) I might have and b) I was promised I could because when the plumbers he had contracted for this job had just started on my baths he snatched them away to another job and refused to bring them back .  I agreed to pay for a third of the cost of creating a small bump-up in the ceiling above the shower head in the upstairs bath - all of which became necessary when one of his incompetent minions failed to MEASURE , leaving me with a shower head that hit me at nose level . I am five ft five . I would have had to shower in a permanent crouch.  I should have insisted Mr. Cooper pay for the whole thing but I made that agreement and I will stick to it and pay him the $3,000. or so I owe him . The minute he fixes ALL of the gross errors listed above . In the meantime may I suggest that anyone thinking of a historical restoration run screaming in the opposite direction from Early New England Restorations AND Brian Cooper and his "custom"  millwork company Deschenes and Cooper .  It's quite bad enough to rip off me and my father , who spent a huge amount of money on all this , virtually every penny we had before the crash , but to do it when your principal employer ( ME) is chronically severely ill , which pretty much guarantees that if your sorry butt IS ever dragged into court , IF this chronically ill person is ever WELL enough to do so and somehow scrapes together the cash to do so , who knows when IT WILL BE . ...THAT'S JUST LOW .
