  • My first appointment with Dr. Abella was just ok. He reviewed my MRI, had zero personality or compassion, and then scheduled my first epidural steroid injection. He didn't tell me what to expect beyond just the few minutes after receiving the injection, so if you ever get an injection like this, please know that side effects are MANY, and you could have those side effects for about 5-6 weeks. The follow up appointment didn't go well. The steroid injection had not worked on my injury, so Dr. Abella became extremely antagonistic. I asked a bunch of questions about alternative approaches, but he shot them all down and even laughed at me when I asked about laser spinal surgery.

    He said and quot;none of the surgeries will work! It's all a marketing ploy. Traditional surgery works only 1/2 the time, and yeah, the pain meds aren't working because none of them will work. If any of the meds actually worked, there wouldn't be so many to choose from.and quot;

    Okay...so nice to meet you, Dr. Antagonism!

    He then shot down Opioid pain killers, which I NEVER mentioned at all or even asked about. He said and quot;I don't prescribe opioids, and none of us here prescribe them so don't even ask for them.and quot; Which I thought was incredibly rude and presumptuous, as if he assumes all of us who suffer severe spinal pain are prescription drug addicts.

    He reluctantly performed a second epidural injection and referred me to physical therapy, which didn't work. I went to Physical Therapy. The PT guy assigned to my file was Michael Peronace, the director of the PT center there. Imagine my surprise when and quot;doctorand quot; Peronace had an even worse bedside manner than Abella did! Peronace is the kind of guy who refuses to listen assumes he knows EVERYTHING about your condition and shoots down your assumptions and talks over you very condescendingly. I don't do well with condescension.
    I went in there with the same spinal pain, with a secondary pain flare up on the left side of my pelvis that kept getting worse. I had symptoms of kidney stones but Peronace immediately shot down the notion that I could possibly have a stone without knowing ANY of my medical history regarding my pelvic region, and essentially gave me the exact same stretches I had been doing all along. He had zero bedside manner, zero compassion and made it seem as though it's my fault for being in pain. What a waste of time!
