    I responded to an ad on Mark?s Motorsports website advertising a dirt bike for sale and went to the store to check it out. The salesperson showed me the bike and said the bike had been gone over completely by the service department. He said they put over $500 worth of work into the bike that included the top end, spokes, fresh fluids, filter and plugs. After a quick test ride, I noticed the brakes were weak. They had the mechanic look at it and he adjusted the brakes. They were asking $400 over NADA and when I tried to negotiate on the asking price, the salesperson said the price was firm due to all the work they put into the bike. I asked the salesperson if the bike came with a warranty and he said if I found anything wrong within 30 days of purchase, Mark?s Motorsports would take care of it. Not knowing much at all about dirt bikes, I put all my trust in the salesperson's word and Mark?s Motorsports and made the purchase.  

    After getting the bike home and unloading it off the truck, I noticed a bolt in my driveway. I began to search all over the bike for a similar bolt. I found a match. In fact, the bolt that matched was nearly all the way unscrewed and about to fall out as well. I replaced the bolt that fell out and tightened the other one. I looked on the internet and found an owner?s manual for the bike. After reading it, I learned that the rear brakes have a brake wear indicator. When looking at the indicator on the bike, it was at the limit. The rear brakes were worn out. I also learned how to check the oil. When checking it, I found the oil level was very low. The oil was barely touching the end of the dip stick. Finally, I noticed the bike smoked a lot. All dirt bikes smoke right? Nope! Not 4 strokes and this bike is a 4 stroke.  

    I called Mark?s Motorsports back and talked to the salesperson. He said I would have to talk with Mark, the owner. When I finally reached Mark, he started making excuses for my concerns saying the wear indicator was probably bent because they all get bent. He also told me to make sure I was screwing the dip stick all the way in to get a correct reading even though the manual says to unscrew the stick, wipe clean and seat the stick without screwing it in to check the oil level. Even checking the oil the way Mark suggested, the oil was still below the lowest level on the dip stick. He did confirm that a 4 stroke engine should not smoke. Mark then told me to bring the bike back and they would check the bike for my concerns.  

    About a week after bringing the bike back, I called and spoke to the service manager. He said the brakes were worn out and they ordered new pads. He also advised me that when they had the top end apart initially, that they resealed all the seals. He said the cylinder or piston wasn?t perfect. The service manager did confirm that oil was getting by and burning but the bike had good compression. He said they changed the oil and put in synthetic but as far as the smoking issue is concerned, it?s an ?as is? sale and Mark?s wasn?t going to fix it.  After getting the bike back, it continued to smoke even with synthetic oil.  

    Of course, I didn?t get anything in writing regarding a 30 day warranty. I thought Mark?s Motorsports was a professional, honest business. So, I paid $400 over NADA and the bike has a worn piston or cylinder and my only recourse is to warn other potential buyers of my bad experience with Mark?s Motorsports.
