Despite scheduling a cleaning between 2-4pm the company tried to show up at 12:30p when we were not available. The cleaning was supposed to be for $75. They claimed that the chimney needed sealing and charged us $600. It was an outrageous scam and I will never use them again.

The chimney camera found an old beehive that was causing the problem.  The camera was able to dislodge it.  But the real point here is how professional James Ball Chimney Cleaning was throughout the process.  James, the owner, was directly involved in trying to diagnose the problem on the phone and by email.  They showed up on time (confirmed the appointment, also), were courteous and a pleasure to work with.  After the process, James took the time to painstakingly explain exactly what the camera captured and went out of his way to discuss possible future preventive measures that don't involve him.

It is rare, in 2016, in Fairfield County, CT, to find great old-fashioned service like this.

Shocking & Horrible. I fell victim to work that wasn't authorized and paid 10x the cost of the initial job. Like a fool I wrote a huge check. They reimbursed me 1k (addition error I was told) but failed to provide me an itemized bill. The check was cashed ASAP. One guy spoke to me in the house while the other was working up on my roof. Masonry work was done but they were not licensed to do that type of work.I've been emailing the company and haven't heard back. Beware. Now filing with BBBofCT, filing a claim in small claims court & a family friend, an attorney will be helping me pro bono. As a recent widow, this is financially devasting & humiliating. FWIW, I booked a job via telemarketing call for a chimney cleaning. They were having a special on a furnace check so both cost $135 (discounted because they had an emergency job. 10K+ later and I'm still so distraught. Advised if I paid cash I would save the tax. Yeah, I keep that cash in the house all the time - not! I was blind-sided. Wish the owner would contact me.

He waxs on time, and did what he said would remove the creosote buildup in the flue.
He charged what he said, and nothing more.
We will have him clean our fireplace flues again in 2016.  He did a very good job.  He was very neat and considerate of our furniture.

Curtis scheduled to come to clean my dryer vent.  I waited all afternoon and he never showed up.  He never returned my phone call or text to determine if he was coming.
Very unprofessional to not show up and call to let the customer know you are not calling.  I would not use him again.

Short Summary: they did the very bare minimum.  They also insisted that they pay us sales tax on the deal to them, in cash.  Which was out outrageous.  And we paid them, and they didn't have change. They showed up on time, and were responsive, so those were positives.  We would most definitely not use them again.
We purchased a deal via Angie's list to have our Chimney cleaned.  Most of the reviews were positive, so we were expecting good things.
The first sign of trouble was the day before the date of the cleaning, when we still hadn't heard from them.  We didn't want to wait in the house all day, so I called them.  I believe it was John who I spoke to, and after confirming a time, told me one of his guys would call me back.  Allan called me, and kept asking if he could come earlier.  I told him he could come a bit earlier, but he kept asking me to come even earlier than that.  I had to tell him several times that we could not do earlier times, due to our babies' nap schedules.  The number of times he kept asking to come earlier seemed quite unprofessional.
I was at work when he arrived, so my wife showed him the chimney.  Now, I had wanted to heating flue cleaned.  I was under the assumption that they'd call when they arrived to determine whether they would clean the heating or fireplace flue.  Perhaps it was my fault for not specifying earlier - we are first time homeowners and so have not done this before.  In any case, Allan cleaned the fireplace flue, which was barely used and we did not necessarily need cleaned, without asking either my wife or myself whether that was the one to clean.  It is clearly much less work to clean the fireplace flue, and I suspect that he knew that, and was the reason he did not confirm which flue to clean.
The actual cleaning was abnormally quick.  Allan was in and out in not much more than 10 minutes.  Again, I'm not an expert on this, but now that I've had a chance to speak to other homeowners, this seems like an extremely perfunctory cleaning.  Not surprisingly it wasn't thorough, as another chimney specialist showed us later with photographs taken inside the chimney.
The coupon was also supposed to include an inspection of the chimney.  But Allan did not leave any notes, or told my wife anything, or called me.  He literally dashed out.
As Allan was leaving, he told my wife that we had to pay sales tax on the deal to him, in cash.  Now, I've purchased several Angie's List deals in the past, and we have NEVER been asked to pay any more than the stated amount up front.  In the interest of being good customers, my wife paid him.  Except he didn't have any change.
My wife told me what happened and I called them the next day.  I told them my reservations about the speed of the cleaning, and John was quite responsive, which was a positive.  He even put Allan on the line. I asked Allan that he did not leave any notes for the inspection, and Allan simply said that there was nothing to report.  That's it, nothing else.  I was somewhat shocked because I thought there would at least be something to note (for example I know that there wasn't a chimney cap on the chimney, and there was likely to be undesired effects from that)  But Allan just repeated that he left no note on the inspection because there was nothing to say.  As I was trying to process this, John told me that Allan was his 'top guy,' and that they would come back if I wanted.  That was a nice gesture, but one that I ultimately turned down.  I decided that people who exhibited this low level of professionalism were unlikely to do a much better job a second time around.
Subsequently, we went to another chimney provider, who came and did a SIGNIFICANTLY more thorough job.  With specific reference to the fireplace flue that Allan cleaned, we were provided with digital photographs of the inside of the flue demonstrating how the harder to reach places were not cleaned at all.
We got quite a bad deal from this company, in my opinion.   At least one of their employees is very lazy, and possibly a thief.

Edit: in response to the service provider's response:
I think their reply confirms my suspicion that this is a company that is low on quality and trying to maximize volume.  Rather than try to address my concerns about quality, they claimed that we wrote a long and detailed review solely because of $6.35.  A simple examination of the facts should show the silliness of their reply.

    1) we paid for another chimney servicer to come, at a higher cost and with a chimney camera to confirm our suspicions
    2) we live in southeastern Connecticut.  We are not the type of folks who are troubled by the expenditure of $6.35, or $10, which was what we actually paid.  What we are VERY CONCERNED ABOUT is the ETHICS of asking for cash payment after services were rendered and without prior notification.  In other words, it's the PRINCIPLES we're upset about.  The sample principles that does not appear to trouble this provider.

In any case, we have photographic proof of the poor quality of work done by this company.   Note that the provider only disputes one of the facts we presented - the time they spent at our house.  Fellow AL users, please do not let their smear campaign muddle your interpretation of our review.

I have used Comprehensive on many projects over a dozen years and Jim is consistently great to work with. The projects have mostly been masonry (steps, fire place repair) but have included french drain and light carpentry. Jim has a pragmatic approach and the results have always looked good and performed as expected. I highly recommend Comprehensive Masonry

They were a couple hours late but called to let us know, they were very professional and did a great job. They looked at our other chimney and confirmed it was clean (I expected them to try and get us to pay for more...). They were very clean, tightened up some screws on the screen in front of the fireplace and told us some good tips for maintenance. Great experience.

He came in and cleaned the entire chimney in under and hour and removed lots of gunk as ash. We have white couches and there was not a single mark on them. Would highly recommend. I will be hiring him each season. He even took the time to inspect, feel and even smell my wood to tell me what wood should be burned when. He also installed a grate for an additional $45 because my was split in the three places.

Steve and his crew were professional, kind and thorough.  Steve gave a clear, well-itemized estimate for the work his team provided.  The final work was consistent with their estimate and completed in a timely manner.  We have been very happy with the results.  Thank you, Steve and team!
