Heating Oil Company reviews in Danbury

The technician was very patient and informative regarding my many questions while he was here. He shared why and how a good annual maninatenance should be performed and suggested strategies for keeping my system in good condition for many more years (my system is quite old). He was very polite and left the area around my furnace cleaner than he found it. I have been a Mitchell customer for about 7 years and compared to other oil companies I have used in CT you can tell that Mitchell really does focus on customer service. They have always promptly and reliably addressed my service needs and are forthcoming ways that I can save a little money when possible. I feel like they genuinely look out for their customers.

    Jennings Oil Co
We did a fair amount of research on brands and units and had a good idea of what we wanted. From our readings, we realized that the installer was as or even more important than the equipment so we researched many installers within a certain radius of our home, from independent plumbers to local oil companies. Quality work was equally important as price, but quality installation and service were our main drivers. After meeting with three different vendors, we chose Jennings Oil for a number of reasons. We met with Eric Olsen, Jennings' Installation and Sales Manager, and were very comfortable with his knowledge and recommendations. We haggled a bit on the price of the units and installation and felt the final price was fair. They were also more competitive than our current oil provider so we decided to use Jennings as our sole provider of oil and service. We were very happy that everything Eric outlined and committed to in terms of timing and installation was strictly adhered to and installation went very smoothly. The team was pleasant, professional and neat, and we especially liked having Eric on site for the install. Since we had the installation in June, we of course only utilized hot water. We did have a minor issue develop a few days after installation involving the oil feed line to the burner which resulted in a little fuel oil leaking onto the floor and a smell of oil. What is comforting to us is the quick response from Jennings when we called Service. They came promptly and fixed the problem within 30 minutes. We also received a call back from Eric to ensure that everything was satisfactory. We'd also like to mention how pleasant everyone at Jennings has been while setting up our new account for oil delivery, etc. We are very happy with our decision to go with Jennings. And now that the weather has cooled and we can finally try out our oil burner, everything is working beautifully.

    Standard Oil Of Connecticut
Standard Oil is unscrupulous and the customer service is non-existent. Their service techs are unprofessional and skimp on maintenance items and repairs. They charge their customers for services not yet performed and then charge you finance charges if it's not paid. I would categorize them as bullies in the heating oil world. They truly care only about the bottom line. There is no regard for the customer or loyalty which is why, after 3 years, we have cancelled our contract with them. I think they're desparate for customers because they offered us a significant discount on the annual maintenance plan if we would remain their customer and the best message we could send them was to turn down their offer, although tempting, but not enough to make us stay with them. Good riddance.

With regard to price for delivery of home heating oil, they're ok - not the lowest, but not the highest. We signed up for the Fixed Rate plan where our price per gallon was fixed for the first 600 gallons and then it went to a variable rate from there. They tack on an extra fee if you use this service which I believe was about $20. I spoke with a local competing company the other day and they don't offer a fee if you lock in to their Fixed Rate plan, so I'll be calling around this year and most likely won't be returning to Standard Oil for the several reasons. The $20 fee I could deal with, but the poor customer service is a deal-breaker for me.

    1) Customer service is touch and go. When I've had a question regarding pricing or my bill or delivery, I call the Customer Service line and there has been only 1 person that I can remember who was actually very courteous and helpful. All of the other times I called, I ended up with a woman (all the reps I spoke with were women) who just clearly didn't want to be on the phone answering questions. They were not courteous or in any way friendly. They were curt with their answers. They just aren't pleasant to deal with and it got to the point where I just dreaded having to call them. 2) the young man (kid, really) that they sent out to perform the annual maintenance on the boiler was unprofessional. He was talking on the phone with a fellow employee and complaining about a customer that his fellow employee was in the middle of dealing with - the things that he was saying and in the presence of a customer were very rude and unprofessional. 3) He didn't replace the air filter or the thermostat on the hot water heater because he said the air filter looked more or less clean and even though the thermostat on the water heater wasn't working properly, it should be ok for another year. Both of those items were covered under our annual maintenance contract and looking back, I feel like I should have insisted that he leave an air filter because the on in the furnance will eventually need to be replaced and I should have insisted that he change out the thermostat. Our water runs terribly hot - scalding actually, even on the lowest possible setting of the thermostat, but I didn't question the young man's decision which, looking back, I should have. I guess they're trained to save money at all costs even when customer has already paid for a service contract. 4) I had agreed the first year to have an additive added to my oil tank to keep the sludge at bay, but I didn't know that they were going to automatically add this to the tank every year without notifying me first. Luckily, I caught it just in time because they had added it to my bill prior to actually performing the service which is usually done in the summer. I called and told them that I didn't request or sign up for, in any way, a second year of oil tank additive.  The way they do this comes across as sneaky. They hope they can get it past you by adding it to the bill and it's not a ton of money - I think it's about $40 or $50, so they're probably hoping you won't notice, but it should be my choice to request this service every year or every other year or whenever. I don't like them trying to sneak it in.
So long, Standard Oil. I'm not going to miss you this season.

It went very well.  I received reliable deliveries throughout this difficult winter.  The staff is always very courteous whenever I call with a question or concern.  I had to estimate my usage since this is my first winter in the house and my usage turned out to be less than I guessed.  They reduce my monthly cost accordlingly and I believe I will have fuel to start the next winter.

The price we locked in on the Oilwas a very good one and the service has been excellent. The furnace in our recently purchased home had been neglected a bit, but Standard Oil got it to operate pretty well with the original service.

Since November, a thermostat failed and Standard Oil replaced it. They got the furnace up and running the same day we called and there was no cost to us becausethe repair wascovered by theservice contract.

Recently the Fan in the furnacefailed and, once again,Standard Oilgot the furnace up and running the same day we called. Joe came outto do the repair and did an excellentjob. We had to pay for the fan since it was not covered by contract, but the furnace is operating betterthan everandwe felt Joe did a greatjob for us.

In August 2013 the water heater quit working, and investigation showed rusted holes in the tank, and the pipe was completely rusted through. The tank was replaced and the repairman indicated that we were lucky to have awoken with the state of the equipment. We replaced the equipment and pipe at an unexpected cost of $2000.
When we contacted Mitchell about the problem they completely denied any responsibility for what had occurred and would not even discuss any obligation they may have based on providing an annual service for the system about 7 months earlier.  We are shocked and angered by the response and want others to know that if they are relying on Mitchell for assisting with safety they should not be and should take extra precautions.

New to homeownership I was a bit anxious about making choices such as a home heating vendor. But I made a few calls, checked online, and got a good feeling when speaking with Barbara at Standard Oil. She explained my options thoroughly and there was no pressure to decide anything. When I was ready I called back and pulled the trigger. I have had no regrets about going with Standard Oil.
Last winter was not particularly cold so I feel that we didn't spend as much as we might going forward, buy I locked in a good (all things considered) price in July 2011, and have done so again this year. Hopefully this year will also be relatively mild, but this is out of everyone's control. All in all, Standard has been pleasant to deal with and reliable in every way. I have confidence in them, and that helps me sleep at night.
