    Allan Burnside MD
My most recent visit to Dr. Burnside was this October. I had a bunch of wierd and uncomfortable symptoms. What really spooked me was a pain I had in the region of my upper left lung which refused to get any better. I was also having difficulty breathing if I tried to lay down for longer than 10 minutes or so. I was having to doze fitfully, propped up on all the pillows I own. I tossed and turned so much with the stabbing pain in my lung that even my kitty finally gave up on me and flounced off to snooze on the sofa. Usually, by 3:00 am I was convinced that I was in the early(?) stages of lung cancer and this was but the beginning of my suffering! Finally, after an entire month of this, I got up the courage to call Dr. Burnside's office for an appointment. The receptionist could have gotten me in that day, but I didn't have a ride, so I went in the following morning. After about a medium wait which I spent studying the colorful and completely eccentric collection of ties displayed in the hall, Dr. Burnside stepped into the examing room. I told him my tale of woe and ended with the shamed comment, "And you know I still SMOKE! I've been trying to quit but..." Dr. Burnside frowned at this confession of mine, but thankfully did not launch into the lecture I richly deserved. We went through the standard stethescope and deep breaths routine with some careful palpitations of the sore area in my lung region. "Did you know that you can get arthritis pain there?" Dr. Burnside asked. No! I didn't. What a bizarre place for arthritis to show up! I was feeling more hopeful, already. The good doctor looked into my mouth and then my nose and ears. "I'm sending you in for an x-ray just for the purpose of elimination, but what you appear to have is a severe sinus infection. I'm writing you a prescription for antibiotics and giving you an inhaler to use 3 times a day. I'll also put you on a short course of prednisone to help with the swelling and congestion. What a doctor! He cured my lung cancer in 10 minutes with antibiotics! He went off to write up my scripts. When he returned, I asked, "Do you think I should get a flu shot?" He beamed at me like I was now his prize patient. "Absolutely!" I'll send the nurse in with one for you." After I got my shot which didn't hurt a bit, I remembered something else when he came back to give me my chest x-ray order. What about those sharp pains I get at night? Will they clear up very soon?" "The anti-biotic should take care of that, but I'll give you a few tylenol #3's to ease things up until all the infection is out of your system. You know, I used to prescribe cough syrup with a little codeine, but Medicaid won't cover that anymore. They still will pay for tylenol #3's though." He winked at me and walked off down the hall past all the ties in their glass cases to see his next patient. I bet that one got a miracle cure, too!
