    Family Ayalas Upholstery & Refinishing
    Anthony came out, took a look, told me exactly what had to be done and quoted me a fair price for labor and materials. He was on time, showed up to pick up the chairs, did them in one day. Amazing. They are better than new with much better materials than from the factory. I would recommend them to anyone for quality work, they are dependable, professional and know what they are doing.     Larry's Custom Furniture
    Larry's Custom Furniture was recommended many times over on my area's Nextdoor website, so I began to research what I might have done before I called to get an estimate. I purchased a sofa and 3 arm chairs (used but high end) and wanted to get an assessment of their current shape and potential. Larry himself made a house call, tested them out, answered my questions, and brought books of fabric swatches. It became clear I could go any number of ways with fabric type, color, slipcovers or upholstered, self-purchase fabric or utilize Larry's fabric suppliers. After a very deep dive down the rabbit hole of fabric; types, durability, online sourcing to a person NOT in the trade, varied quality of materials...(this took me 8 months) I ventured back to Larry's workshop armed with even more questions. Plus, the additional mitigating factor that now I had adopted a stray CAT (!). Larry gave me practical advice about colors (CA sun) and loopy, open weave fabrics (cats just looooove those)....and so I settled on slipcovers. Then I set out to find good quality/washable/tightly woven durable cotton in colors/patterns I could live with. I never gave up and Larry answered my every question patiently, taking time to go over my choices with me when I popped into his shop unannounced. He was my Upholstery Guru and I learned sooooo much that my friends grew weary of me talking furniture construction, down vs fiber and foam fill, fabric designers and mills, and an overall knowledge and provenance of where furniture actually comes from and the debate over new vs. vintage. It was quite the journey. I was not on a strict timeline, so if Larry got a big custom job, I was fine to wait. But when I landed a 6 month job in NYC he managed to deliver all my furniture before I departed and it was beautiful, I loved the seeming miracle of how it all came together and fit into my vision, with the craftsmanship and skills evident in all aspects of the work. I went on to also have my new dining room chairs slipcovered and springs replaced. Beautiful and practical, for life with a cat. Larry never tried to upsell me nor make inflated promises on when I could expect delivery. SO... if you are impatient, or have specific time constraint expectations, maybe this is not for you. It all can depend on the ebb and flow of business and there are times where he gets bombarded trying to fulfill multiple orders, fill the desperate pre-Holiday requests, and a lot of other scenarios. That happens when someone is worth the wait and why he has many longtime and very satisfied repeat customers. Count me among those.

    Penny and Pig Estate Sales
    Penny & Pig Estates Sales was a Godsend! My late brother was an extreme hoarder. I had spent weekends over the past year clearing the house and sorting his stuff and our late parents' valuables. They had resided in the house since the mid-1970s and there were a lot of family belongings to dispose of. By March I was ready to bring in estate sales company. The person recommended by my realtor is located in the San Fernando Valley and by speaking to her, I could sense that she really wasn't interested in making the long treks to the San Gabriel Valley to conduct a sale. She also was negative regarding the items I had to sell. Discouraged, I spent a few days researching other estate sellers. Based on the good reviews and their proximity in the SGV, I settled on Penny & Pig. Taking my initial call, owner Penny Katz was very receptive to my description of the estate. She came out to the house the very next day. We spent at least an hour going over what I had sorted as well as the furnishings and clothes closets. She was very honest in a tactful way, recognizing the sentimental value of the property and the belongings. She told me what she could sell and what should be donated. She also has an an excellent sense of humor, which I appreciate. I felt confident that she would do right by me. Having agreed to proceed, she scheduled the sale for the Friday and Saturday of Easter weekend. 10 days before, she sent her crew in to begin arranging the house for the sale. Meanwhile, Rafael, her transport guy, went over with Penny and me to sort through a storage unit of my late father in-law's furnishings. Penny was able then and there to determine what to sell at the estate sale and what to donate to charity. The storage unit was cleared that day. On the Monday, Wednesday and Thursday before the estate sale, Penny and her crew returned to my brother's house to continue the preparation and pricing for the event. Personal items that they found during their organization went into bathrooms (bathrooms are kept off-limits to estate sale customers). The crew was also able to find many mementos that had either been feared lost or forgotten and were safely put aside. Penny advertised the estate sale widely and it paid off handsomely. Over the course of the Friday and Saturday, Penny estimated that she had up to 400 people attend the estate sale. People bought vintage cameras, antiques and antique furnishings, jewelry, books, magazines, clothing, housewares, gardening equipment, etc. - even a car! After I went through the remaining items, Penny arranged for a charity to come in and take what they wanted. The charity gave us a receipt for charitable tax deductions. Once they were gone, Penny's crew proceeded to clear out the house, an all-day job. By the time they were finished, the house was vacant. Shortly thereafter, Penny sent me a handsome check for the sale, minus a standard commission fee and a very reasonable charge for cleaning out the house. Their efficiency made it possible for me to not only list the house for sale less than a week after the estate sale, but for the realtor to stage an Open House. Four days later, the house was sold. Had you asked me in March if this was at all possible, I would have said, "No way!" My thanks to Penny and her crew for everything!

    During the move multiple items was badly scratched, dented, broken, missing shelves for TV-stand. Claim manager Theo, rude, unapologetic, degrading. They just don't care and would not take responsibility. After numerous calls, e-mails they wrote us back " We could not find the shelves, a decision has been made to issue a settlement. The amount may not be disclosed over e-mail, I will be sending you a check". Theo refused to discus the amount on the phone ether, told me the decision has been made and there is nothing else they can do for me. Got the check $40. Now we are left with TV-stand and bathroom cabinet that needs to be replaced. The way Theo spoke to me and handled my claim was unprofessional, rude and degrading. DISGUSTING

    Excellent. The person helping us explained what needed to be done, possible changes in the appearance of the carpet and gave us a very reasonable price. The rug was pretty dirty so in the end he washed it twice before repairing the sides and putting on new fringe. He still charged us the original price in spite of the extra washing that was needed. The rug looks great and the workmanship is high quality and there were no surprises with the result. Definitely recommend Rugzy.

    Ruby Jane Estate Sales
    Ruby Jane was more responsive and faster than any of the other companies we interviewed. They take a percentage of the gross, 35%. They aren't associated with any store or other entity to which they would give preferences; their sale was unbiased. Some others we interviewed wanted $1500 and a percentage of the gross and said it would take more than a month. They inventoried, priced, and staged the house and garage. They appeared to do research for prices on the pricier items. They provided all the advertising. Hiring them relieved us of the work, we did nothing after they were hired and when they were finished, the house was cleaned out. Items that didn't sell were donated to charities of our choice.
