10 Questions to Ask a Masonry Contractor

Masonry reviews in Westminster

The question posed was, How did it go? Excellent! Craftsmanship honesty attention to detail -taking pride in a job well done; these are descriptors that Gaston Bachelier, of Bachelier & Sons Masonry, takes to heart. We needed cement and brick work for our backyard, and after reading the positive reviews on Yelp and Angies List we contacted Gaston. He came to our home, and patiently answered any question pertaining to what kind of outcome we could expect. Having dealt with a less-than-stellar masonry contractor in the past, my guard was up, but Gaston put me at ease, with his kind manner and professionalism. He inspected the project and sent us a bid. His not the cheapest quote we receivedbut compared to the others masonry companies, we had a gut feeling he was the best person for the job. We were right. Gaston and his crew of three; are polite, trustworthy, hard-working, top-notch professionals, and to quote another reviewer on Yelp, Gaston (and his team) exceeded our expectations. It is also true, that he kept us up to date on the progress. Moreover, when he says he and his guys will be there he means it. None of this crap that many contractors are notorious for about showing up on a specific day or time, and they are very late or a complete no-show. In addition, you are lucky to get a phone call; otherwise, it seems you are trying to reach them. And the job lags and lags = frustration on the homeowners part. This was not the case with Gaston. He was at our home for the 3-days the project ran. Not that his crew needed instruction (they are all very good at their job), but it gives a homeowner piece-of-mind, to have the contractor on premises. After a days work, his crew cleaned up our property thoroughly. We will be using Bachelier & Sons Masonry again for another project. I also have to concur with another Yelp reviewer: That Gaston does not run from job to job, he stays focused on his current project which will be yours if you smart enough to hire him. And we hope you do! To borrow a quote, The Bitterness of Poor Quality Remains, Long After the Sweetness of Low Price Is Forgotten. And poor quality is not synonymous with, Bachelier & Sons Masonry. Mrs. B

Bob and his crew do impeccable work. They were punctual, courteous and totally professional. I am very particular and couldn't fault them in any area. They cleaned up perfectly each day and were happy to address any questions and share their expertise. We are going to have another project in the near future and wouldn't think of calling anyone else.

    Approved Contractor Inc.
Our house and detached garage needed major stucco, paint and a new Stack Stone facade work done along with a new front and side door and a pair of windows for two rooms. Our home is almost 60 years old and was in dire need of exterior work.
Due to having almost universally bad experiences with various contractors in the past, my husband and I took almost 3 months interviewing various contractors and getting bids before settling on Approved Contractors.  We weren't looking for lowball bids, just a contractor that would do good work at a fair price and in a timely fashion.  The bids ranged from as low as $5k up to $25k+.  Approved Contractors came in about $13k with the caveat we bought the Stack Stone material and the new doors/framing on our own which was an additional $4k.  They provided all other materials (stucco, paint, etc).
Once the project date was set about 6 weeks after we inked the contract, we dealt mostly with the manager Justin who was very responsive via e-mail or phone.  If I had any questions, such as a day or two which it rained and when work could resume, he returned my call or e-mail within the same day, usually within an hour or two.  Jesus was the on-site crew manager for the majority of the exterior work and was very friendly and accommodating to any questions or issues we brought up (such as we changed the color of one part of the front as they started painting it!).  One particular issue I had was during the week much of the work was done, it was extremely hot in the house and we had to move a large AC unit frequently to disconnect and re-connnect before and after exterior work was done during the day and the crew helped me move the huge unit in and out of it's housing so my family had AC in the evening.
The doors and windows were installed in one day about a week before the exterior was started.  The work on the house exterior was started on the agreed upon day and the crew was always the as-needed number of workers.  No one or two guys dragging out the job for weeks - in fact, they finished a couple days ahead of schedule despite a two day rain interruption.  When the front exterior wall and planters were torn out, it was discovered that there was no insulation in the walls which was addressed during the same day for a very reasonable and prior approved add-on price. Walls were pressure blasted and any significant cracks, etc were pointed out to me and what kind of work was required to patch and fix them.
The quality of work was excellent and exactly what we wanted.  Great care was taken with keeping the grounds clean during and after a day's work.  As noted, they actually finished the project in two week's time (including working a Saturday) *under* the estimated time frame for completion.
Like many people, I'm more motivated to write and complain about a bad experience with a business, but my positive experience with Approved Contractors was so strikingly good, I feel compelled to take the time to note what a great experience getting my house done with these people has been.

We had shopped many different proposals for this project.  While Falkon Construction was not the least expensive, they were fair priced and the most professional company that we dealt with.  I could tell from the very onset that Val Mataele ran a very efficient operation. There were NO surprises.  The proposal was very detailed and ALL questions were answered fully in advance of the project being given to Falkon.  I have dealt with many contractors in the past, but have never dealt with any that have dedicated themselves to levels of customer service that were demonstrated by Val and his crew.  Val kept in contact with us during the entire project and, when I did call him, he returned my calls in a timely manner.  Charlie, who was on the project everyday, gave us design ideas that helped us tremendously.  Best I can say is..... If you are looking for an A++ company that knows what they are doing, Falkon is the place.  They are up front about their service and expertise, and very specific on the services they offer.  In other words, these people are PRO's!!  If the job requested is not part of their expertise, Val is up front and let's you know.  They offer a service for a fair price and do an excellent job!!  As they say, you get what you pay for!!  In this case, I can say... I GOT MORE THAN I PAID FOR!!  Thank You Val, and Charlie!!  You are a rare breed these days, we will definitely use you on future projects!!

Initially, it was a challenge to schedule the crew to come over.  Henry, the owner, promised they would come a certain day but never showed up or bothered calling.  When I confronted him, he eventually apologized for the delay.  Most companies would never admit to their mistakes but this company does which show to me that they have integrity.  After the initial hurdle was overcome, the crew members arrived on time and did a fantastic job.  I observed them and realized that they don't cut corners.  The workers are professional, respectful and friendly.  They clean up after themselves.  I'm very satisfied with their work.  Compared to other estimates I received, CCL was the most expensive.  However, you get what you pay for.  I don't regret hiring their services and I feel that the work done was of the highest quality.

He showed up the first day on time for a description of the project we had in mind.  He promised to come by a week later for a follow up.  He never showed up and he didn't call to tell us so.  We waited for 2 hrs and called him.  His only phone number provided to us was disconnected.  Another week passed by and we got a phone message from him saying that he couldn't make it that day because it was raining.  We did not end up hiring him for obvious reason.  Very disappointed and unprofessional.

They arrived on time and the supervisor was accommodating at first. That's the best thing I can say for them. The workers completed the job quickly and sloppily. The job which should have taken one week took two weeks. I had to supervise the workers to get the work done neatly. They painted the woodwork the wrong color initially and had to go back to repaint. After completion, another crew needed to come to repair what was previously done. Such as over spray of texture coat on woodwork, the roof, neighbor's cars, failure to sand, and prep before painting the trim.
