    Nest Works
Nest Works showed up to check my roof and put my mind at ease. I had waited until the last minute and panicked like everyone else in LA and called during Christmas season. Robyn showed up at my door with a giant smile in spite of my bad timing- beautiful assistant at his side. I have had this pair working on my Studio City home for years- and as a household with single women I cannot speak highly enough of the quality of care they constantly give with cost effective quotes. Robyn always takes time to inform me of my options. I had recently tried another service for roofing as I had not booked Nest Works and was worried it might rain before there was a service date available. The gutter work turned into a reroofing pressure pitch. I declined- thankfully waiting for Robyn. He came on the day he booked the job and it turns out my roof is in great order. This saved me several thousand dollars. Finding a truthful and competent Handiman is priceless. Do yourself a favor and take worry out of the equation when it comes to keeping your home in working order. Just think to book ahead if possible- I'm certain Robyn will be taking select clients due to high demand. I feel so lucky he considers me a valued customer.

    Butel Construction Inc
We hired Butel for a major renovation of our home, including a complete kitchen remodel, two bathroom remodels, new floors, and a new deck. We looked at 3 other contractors and felt that estimate provided by Butel was the most detailed and professional. Shai, the owner, is an extremely honest person who charges fair prices. They are not the cheapest, but they are also not the most expensive. At your first meeting, Tom will come and do a detailed review of the work you want performed. At this meeting, Tom had the great idea of completely moving the location of the master bath and closet to more efficiently use the space in our master bedroom. The other contractors did not make this suggestion and we greatly appreciated Tom's input and ideas. After the contract is signed, Shai takes over. Shai oversees the projects overall, but day-to-day, we had a project manager, Miguel, on site. Both Shai and Miguel are extremely responsive and professional. Shai went to the site almost daily during the most critical phase of the project. We worked closely for over 6 months. As with all construction projects, unexpected issues will come up and things will get delayed and it is often stressful. Shai and his team did their best to complete the job on time and resolve problems as they arose. If something new needed to be added to the job, we always received a new detailed addition to the contract. As for the subcontactors used by Shai, some are better than others. Angel, the tile guy, is extremely detailed oriented and did a wonderful job tiling our kitchen, fireplace, and bathrooms. The people who installed our floors also did a great job. The painters were not good. We had to have them come back multiple times to do touch ups and I am still unhappy with some of it, as there are many uneven spots and the paint is cracking in some places. One other minor complaint is that once 90-95% of the job is finished, it is sometimes difficult to get the small details and handyman-type issues fixed. After 9 months of living here, we have small issues like towel rack is now falling off the wall. Those are some of the small details that can be improved, but we are extremely happy overall with the quality of the work. We have recommended Butel to our friends and family and We have plans in 2017 to have Butel renovation our garage.

    Pacific Blue Construction Inc
This is debatable but behind the marriage to my loving wife and birth of my two daughters, working with Oren was one of the best decisions I have made.  Picking a home-design partner is complicated as there is a lot of (mis)information and competition.
    1)  He is an architect, designer, contractor, budgetiere and chief-in-charger of vendors.  He has a vision.  He manages the vision.  He executes the plan and is accountable.  Not only is there no grey-area of any decision or responsibility, he is constantly bringing to the table new ideas, vendors and solutions.  Project management was seamless.  His crew was top-notch, loyal and very clean and courteous.  And, every last detail was accounted for and completed.  No ego, all execution.
    2)  Fantastic design sense.  My wife is a product designer and graduate from design school.  She has opinions on details and knows what she likes.  A month into the project my jaw was on the floor as she said over and over again-- "Oren, whatever you think is best."  What????  Amazing.  We trusted his instincts as if they were our own and we were pleasantly surprised on how everything came together in impeccable style.
    3)  He respected our budget and always came up with solutions that had us in mind first.  His vendors and suppliers were always cheaper than what we could find our own.  He worked closely with me on an itemized plan and empowered us to help in places that we could.  Nothing seemed bloated or excessive.  Rather, he prides himself on creative solutions that - not only stay on budget-- but make the overall design more interesting and unique.
    4)  Spent a lot of time thinking about how we wish to live and how we wish to grow into our home over the next several year.  A redesign is upgrading, tearing down and replacing.  With Oren, it is more about room flow, materials, holistic scheme and an overall feeling of the completed project.  We thought we were updating the kitchen wing and when we were finished, we had a new house.
    5)  Oren is a good guy.  After many morning meetings, we feel like he is genuine friend that we trust and enjoy spending time with.  We would happily work with him again and have already recommended him to other people-- who are starting projects together.

    Real Construction
This was one of the most disappointing experiences that I have had with an Angies list provider. The work was misrepresented
in the offer. An analogy would be if someone offered to sell a car for $ 1000. Then, said, if you want hub caps on the car, that
will be another $ 500. Oh, you want a front bumper? That will be another  $ 500!
The offered to build a deck with "premium redwood". But when it came down to discussing it, they said unless I paid more,
the wood will have knots in it. They said my yard was slightly uneven, so it will cost more to level it. (my yard is no more uneven
then most) Then, one of the owners said it includes a skirt around the edge to finish it and the other owner said it will cost more.
The photo in their ad shows a beautiful deck with stairs and railing. I said just build whatever you promised in the offer.
    They would not.

    National Deck & Stair
It had been originally done by a guy selected by the Homeowners Association who was terrible and it turned out that he wasn’t licensed or insured. So, we had to get somebody else to come in and fix it. National Deck & Stair did a great job. We spent about $5000 for their services since it was a major job. They were very upfront about what they were going to do, how they were going to do it, how long it would take and what it would cost. They were extremely accurate on all of that. It has been great for a couple of years now. There have been no leaks or significant cracks. It has definitely held up. So, I am very pleased with the outcome. I would definitely use their services in the future too.

    JOHN WHYTON GENERAL CONTRACTOR
Second time Mr. Whyton has worked for me. Job was repairing cracks in front exterior stairs of an apt bldg. He met the schedule he gave me and there was a small glitch in completion. But he returned to job site within hours of my call. Completed the fixes and I'm very satisfied with his work.

    CMRS Construction
There was a dip in our concrete driveway in front of the garage that collected water whenever it rained or if someone washed their car. We share a driveway with our neighbor, so we didn't want to redo the concrete. Several contractors said a drain was the only other solution, but Daryl offered the most practical and least expensive way to do this. Rather than digging a drain into the concrete all the way out to the street, they dug a drain that flows across the driveway into a container buried in the yard with a metal grate cover. When the container fills with water, it activates a pump that pushes the water out through an attached sprinkler, distributing it further back into the yard. It sounded complicated when first described, but now seems very clever and relatively simple. It seems to work based on the testing they did, but we're waiting for the next rainfall to give it a good trial run. (Just in time for El Nino!) The work itself looks good. The only concern was that leaves, dirt and debris could easily fall through the grate into the water container, which might require frequent cleaning. To reduce this, we just placed a layer of window screen material under the grate to catch any large debris. Once the water puddling problem was solved, we also wanted to build out an attached carport that wasn't too expensive, but also wouldn't look like it was made for a mobile home. Daryl quoted a wooden carport with clear plastic corrugated roofing. We had a hard time imagining what this would look like, but it sounded practical, and the price was fine. When the frame was built out, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the carpentry. The wood was much thicker and sturdier than we would have expected for the price, and the structure was constructed with very nice a pergola design. We actually thought about having a pergola built instead of a regular boring carport, but didn't think it was possible within our budget. We liked the natural look of the wood, so we opted to have it stained to match our fence and deck instead of painted. It really looks as though it was built to go with the house rather than added on as an afterthought. The clear plastic roofing was a good call, as it feels more open and spacious under the carport than it would have with a solid roof. It doesn't block out the sunlight, but the material offers UV protection, seems to reduce heat and will help keep things dry if it rains. The work took a bit longer than expected, but they worked around our schedule and were flexible and responsive when we asked for changes. We would certainly use them again (this was already the second time).
