  • When the office manager heard that there was a car accident and insurance would be involved, her eyes lit up. She upsold me on the most expensive glasses and sunglasses they make -- designer frames, special lenses, etc. -- and I was charged $1,800 for two pairs of glasses! That's right, $900 each for two pairs of glasses. When the lawsuit over the car accident resulted in a very low settlement, my lawyer had to negotiate with all my doctors to reduce their bills. Even the neurologist, whose bill was thousands of dollars, settled for a small amount, fitting the small court award. Not Schlanger's office. His office demanded EVERY PENNY of $1,800 for 2 PAIRS OF GLASSES. AND, that wasn't enough. While my lawyer was negotiating with Schlanger's office for OVER A YEAR, during which they never budged an inch, Schlanger's office kept reporting me to COLLECTION AGENCIES, even though the negotiation with the lawyer was still ongoing. VERY UNETHICAL! I couldn't settle with any other doctors because Schlanger's office took so long to negotiate their settlement. Finally, they agreed to about $200 less than the full amount, after almost 2 years.
The eyeglasses were fine, but NO eyeglasses should cost $900! Very unethical business practices, which is too bad, because Dr. Schlanger is a competent ophthalmologist. I will never ever go there again, and I warn everyone else to stay away.

  • They were able to get me in within a few days of my calling. The exam was quick, the staff was knowledable. The doctor is direct, which I appreciated. They do try and funnel you into buying glasses through them. It is somewhat of a hard sell. If you're firm, you can get the prescription and go where you want to.

  • The appointment was fine. However, I find it hard to make an appointment. It seems like you need to plan about three months out. His staff makes me feel that if I can't plan that far ahead, then I should go somewhere else. When I ask if they can call me if there's a cancellation, the response is that I am welcome to call them. The only other issue that I have had is with insurance. I've been coming here for years and have used VSP insurance. There was always some sort of co-pay, and they would tell me that there were tests that they did that were not covered by insurance. But last year, I discovered that they stopped taking my insurance and never bothered to tell me. Both of these issues are staff issues. It is a testament to Dr. Troy, that despite these issues, I have returned.

  • Appointments are seldom available quickly, but once an appointment is set, everything proceeds on time.  Dr,. Wheadon's eye examinations are thorough and use the latest equipment.  He is an excellent communicator.  Luckily, there have not been any issues with my vision that affect eye health, though my vision seems to be changing fairly often.
My only issue is with the time it takes to deliver new glasses.  It is supposed to be in the 1-2 week range, and occasionally has been, but more often it takes 2-4 weeks.  Part of the slowness is that Dr. Wheadon's office rejects glasses it finds not to be perfect.  That is good.  However, the office could do a better job of keeping patients informed of progress.

  • Although For Eyes' pricing is extremely low, it is a full service optometrist.  I have never used its eye-exam service, but the glasses it builds represent an incredible value, far lower in price even than the co-pay required by VSP at participating opticians (which For Eyes is not).  Its promotional glasses are not very attractive, but nothing prevents a client from getting frames elsewhere, or using older frames with obsolete prescriptions, and having new lenses installed.  Given whatever promotions are in place, each pair can be as little as $50, but I usually wind up spending closer to $100 for blended bifocals and lighter lenses.  The staff is great, and glasses usually appear within a week.

  • My appointment started late (at least 30 minutes). It kind of seemed as though the eye doctor I saw was trying to get through as many patients as possible in as little time as possible, but perhaps that's just because they were running late. The eye exam went fine and the doctor was friendly, but I feel that I've had more comprehensive eye exams done with other doctors in the past. Either way, I got my new contact lens prescription and it has worked well for me.

  • Dr. Small was highly recommended by a close friend. It had been several years since I had my eyes checked i.e. a vision test, check for glaucoma and any other eye problems. So, I decided to schedule an exam with Dr. Small. I called his office and the office staff was very helpful in setting up an appointment fitting into my busy schedule. On the day of my appointment, I arrived a bit early to fill out all of the paperwork and was greeted by a very friendly and helpful staff. The office was very busy, but it was only a short wait before I was taken by a technician to start the eye tests. After having several tests done, I was returned to the waiting area. I was there long enough for my eyes to dilate, then I was taken in to see Dr. Small. Dr. Small took his time examining my eyes and answered all of my questions. At no time did I feel rushed or like my questions were trivial. I would highly recommend Dr. Small.

  • He is very good and a little expensive on the glasses but if you have insurance sometimes it is covered or partially covered. He is nice, seems thorough, and seems very knowledgeable with a wonderful educational background. He is also very good at what he does.

  • He is excellent.  I have Cobra and none of my doctors take any insurance anymore as they are disgusted with insurance.  I would recommend him.  He gets high ratings and I will continue to see him in the future.  He is available, there are certain days he goes to the Santa Monica office. The office is nice and small.  Some days, he is behind, but doesn't keep you working for hours.  He may seem a little cold, but, he is very professional.  I'm in a wheel chair.  They know what they're doing.  They work it out if you have financial problems.

  • What stood out about him was the capability and expertise. He is very conservative and will only do one eye at a time. I was satisfied with the surgery 100 percent. I would definitely recommend him.
