  • My wife gave birth to both our children at Kaweah Delta.  The first experience was pretty bad because we had to share a room with another patient because they didn't have enough room at the time.  For our second child, the experience was much better.  But, still not anything to write home about.  We've taken our kids to the Kaweah Delta ER for years and have had mixed feelings about the visits.  Many times they play down your concerns and make you feel as though you're over-reacting for being concerned about your child.  One time, our three-year-old daughter had broken her collar bone, and the ER doctor actually told us there was no need to do anything special because we don't really even need collar bones, but that they are only leftover from when we used to have wings.  (I kid you not!!!  He actually said this!  If I hadn't heard it with my own ears, I wouldn't have believed it.  It's hard to understand how nut jobs like this can actually complete medical degrees.)
Anyway, none of that is as bad as the real reason for my rating.  My wife's sister went in to the Kaweah Delta ER with an OBVIOUS stroke.  We were with her at a baseball game when the stroke occurred.  One side of her body was slumped over, her speech was slurred, among many other tell-tale stroke symptoms.  Even though we're not in the medical profession, we all knew what was going on.  Well, after making her wait in the waiting room for HOURS before she was seen, the idiot ER doctor sent her home, telling her it was stress related.  It was late at this point, and most of the family had gone home, thinking she was in good hands at the hospital.  Well, the next morning, things had not improved, so her husband took her back to the ER.  They still refused to admit the obvious, and began running tests on her... but, none that really related to the stroke we kept saying we felt she had.  Finally, after much persuasion on our part, they admitted her to the hospital.  Unfortunately, her condition worsened and she ended up dying the next day in the hospital.  As it turns out, she had a blood clot that went to her brain.  Because the ER sent her home, and refused to do the appropriate scans for a stroke, the clot (which could have been removed through a routine procedure if caught immediately) was allowed to travel to her brain.  At that point, there was nothing that could be done but watch her die.  Her brain swelled and she was in excruciating pain.  However, they refused her pain medication because they said it would interfere with tests they wanted to run (after it was too late... and we came to find out that they knew this)!
All along the way, hospital staff was dodgy, uncooperative, testy, inconsiderate, and would not hear our concerns.  They realized they had screwed up early on, and from that point on, they went into cover-up mode.  It was painfully obvious.  They still will not admit, to this day, that they were in the wrong.  However, the hospital paid out a large settlement to my brother-in-law and his sons.  (Obviously because they knew they had no legal leg to stand on.)  And, the state is investigating several doctors involved with the tragedy.  I'm sure they'll only get a slap on the wrist, if anything.  But, needless to say, we avoid Kaweah Delta like the plague now.  We have since heard countless horror stories of people who have lost (or almost lost) loved ones because of negligence and incompetence at KDDH.
Take my advice: if you think you can drive to Fresno or Bakersfield, do that instead.  Avoid Kaweah Delta as if your life depended on it, because it very well may.

  • We've never had a child before, but if we have anymore we are definitely having them delivered at this hospital. The doctors, nurses and labor coach were all phenomenal! Very attentive people. They absolutely put my wife at complete ease.
