    Powerhouse Construction
I called Powerhouse Construction for an estimate on a bathroom and kitchen remodel. Scott, came out and was very helpful. He took his time explaining all of the different options to me. It only took but a few minutes and I knew he was the right guy for the job, first impressions are very important to me. The job went exactly as he said it would go. I'm very pleased with the final product. Bob

    Designer Stones & Homes Inc

This will be an in-progress report with more details to be added later.  I found Designer Homes online at Angie's list. I carefully read over 40 reviews of this company there and all but a couple seemed to be very happy with the work done.  I read the negative reviews very carefully and felt that the issues that caused the poor scores could have been the result of misunderstanding or lack of knowledge by the homeowner about the process. The work crew has been working at our home for just about one week (5 working days) and in my opinion, the quality of the work has been very good.  I grew up with a contractor/house builder father so I am familiar with the basics of construction processes, even though I am not an expert by any means, and am certainly not up-to-date with all the new products now available that can be used in the construction process.

The details - after the recent rains we noticed that the top layer of bricks of the large decorative brickwork structure at one corner of our home was sinking to the point that the sag in the middle of the bricks across the top was 2+ inches lower at the center of the "span" than at the ends.  We hired a local masonry company listed with Angie's list to do a minor demo and repair of just the sinking bricks, only to find VERY extensive damage to the wood in the corner support column of the house wall behind the brickwork as soon as the top layer of bricks was removed.  It was soon very clear that all the brickwork needed to come down in order to access and replace framing structure under both corner windows.  Since it was likely that other areas of the exterior wall (wood - latex-stained plywood and tongue and groove siding surfaces) were probably also damaged, we decided to call for bids from several local contractors and strip the siding from one whole (2-storey) side of the house..

After the bids came in, Ed with Designer Homes was the clear frontrunner since Ed was able to discuss the projected work with us in a very knowledgeable fashion.  That might not be important to someone else, but since I grew up hearing construction terms and seeing projects being completed all around me, it gave me confidence that Ed and his crew would do a quality job.  I have not been disappointed.  The guys are here by 9 a.m. every morning with the supplies and tools they will need for the day's work.  Ed or his project supervisor checks in almost daily to make sure everything is on schedule.

Since we are both retired, we are here and are able to watch the daily progress of the work.  The tear-out took just a bit over one day, then they immediately started rebuilding the corner that was the most damaged area on the house.  The work has continued to the point where all the structure is now solid, our recycled fairly new vinyl windows are back in their spaces and sealed - with new trim (painted just today) and the preparation of the wall for siding and new plaster is complete.  The woodwork is level (I checked with my Dad's old level) and square and the window installation is almost complete inside.  The drywall is coming along - it needed some extensive patches due to the corner column being removed and replaced without removing the interior drywall, but that is coming along well and I am sure that the quality of the finished product will be as good as what I see on the exteriors.

The crew cleans up the exterior and interior work areas every day before leaving the jobsite.  It is a messy and sometimes dusty project, but they do their best to keep their work areas clean and safe and protect carpet and furniture with plastic sheeting.  We also have several indoor cats and the members of the crew have been careful to keep doors closed.  If the rest of this project goes as well as the first part, we will certainly be calling Designer Homes for the next project on our remodel wish list.

February 2015 - the project is complete.  Here is additional information regarding this project.  I have updated the original cost estimate to reflect additional expenses (building permits and additional damage found during demo repaired are included in the final cost listed here) associated with the project paid to Designer Stones and Homes.  This final cost does not include cost of the large roll-off bin rented from Harrison Trash and paint I purchased for use since I wanted to match existing interior wall colors as closely as possible and match the new siding color to the existing garage door.  Ed asked me to order the roll-off for the project and it was onsite throughout the majority of the work.

There were a couple of instances of miss-communications during the project.  One day the work crew didn't show up at all and another time I was told they would work on a Saturday and no one showed.  I had to call both times to find out what was going on since I wasn't informed.  This wasn't really a problem for us since we are retired and here pretty much all the time anyway, but it could be a problem for people with work and family schedules to manage.

The finished exterior looks very good and we don't really miss the brickwork that wasn't replaced.  The minor flaws - interior vinyl window trim isn't quite precisely aligned with the edges of the window and the opening, but the imperfection isn't very obvious with the window treatments reinstalled.  If you look closely, you can see that the new interior paint around each window that was removed doesn't quite match the old paint even though the painter did try to feather it into the old.  I was told by the paint store employee where I purchased the paint that since paints have been reformulated, any new paint of the same color would not match perfectly.  He was correct... it doesn't, so we may be re-painting the interior walls soon.  Our  approx 7-year old Simonton retrofit dual pane insulated windows were reinstalled into the original openings that should have not changed and the interior sills ARE level, so I am not quite sure what happened there.  Maybe I am just too picky, but it does sort of bug me, though it wasn't a deal breaker.  At some point I may contact Window Solutions to see if I can have the trim replaced since the company (formerly Westlake Window and Door) that originally installed the retrofit windows did a great job installing the trim evenly on the original retrofit install.

I am adding a few more photos of the final stages of the project.  I would use Designer Homes again, but I probably would be much more vocal and picky about how the interior work is finished.  The total project took about 3 weeks - approx.. 14-15 working days.  I am very satisfied with the fit and finish of the exterior work and feel it improves the curb appeal and value of our home..

    Scott Home Repair
Mr. Goodrich is a one of a kind professional contractor with honesty, integrity, courtesy and an A-plus work ethic. To begin with, he always returned my calls and had an eager spirit to meet our electrical needs. He was punctual, brought all the necessary equipment and was extra careful around furniture and appliances, since our home is small. He discovered that both ceiling areas were not structurally sound enough to support the weight of fans. Even the fan in the dining room had to be removed because of the danger it posed to us should the support give way or the fan dislodge from an earthquake or wear-and-tear. We'll have to put a lighter chandelier or sconce light in the fan's place. In the kids' bedroom he found that the electrical box and support areas were loose and dangerous for any appliance of greater weight than a small decorative light fixture. It's a real shame our complex maintenance staff installed heavy devices without considering the load factors and have not fortified the attic space joists and beams. I was disappointed the fans could not be installed, but extremely grateful that Mr. Goodrich is very familiar with construction codes. He wasn't looking to grab that fast buck and do the job even if it was a hazard to our safety. Given the recent Napa quake, Mr. Goodrich's advice came at a propitious time. I absolutely look forward to hiring his services in the future and highly, highly recommend him to all. They don't make 'em like that anymore! I In my job I deal with contractors for all kinds of structural repairs and it is very rare to find a professional like Scott who deals squarely, honestly and with the right motives.

    Scott Home Repair
The work required was to replace a damaged tile wall behind the existing tub/shower, replace the bathroom window, replace the bathroom fixtures, and replace the existing flooring to match the level of the wood floor in the rest of the house.
When the tub and tile were removed extensive water damage to the wood framing was discovered.  The damage was so extensive that the bathroom walls and floor had to be demolished to a point of tie-in to sound wood in order to rebuild walls and floors.  Once the framework structure was complete, he replumbed for new fixtures, repaired interior walls, installed tub/shower, toilet, sink, lighting, bathroom window, and vinyl flooring, and replaced the trim and painted the bathroom.
Scott's experience with the old 1920's lath & plaster construction and framing allowed him to be able to purchase lumber and other construction materials that were consistent with the existing structure, and facilitated tie-in with the remaining structure.
Before he could even begin replacing the bathroom fixtures he had to rebuild the basic structure of the house, which jacking up the house to install foundation and level subflooring beams, and reframing the entire bathroom structure.
Based on his experience and knowledge of bathroom products, he was able to recommend those that were of high quality and that were relatively easy to install thereby saving time and money.
Not only was he able to maintain the original construction standards, he adapted to the bathroom construction to the new dimensions of the new fixtures.  The wall around the tub was build out about one inch to accommodate slightly smaller dimensions; the drain to the toilet was relocated before the subfloor was installed to accommodate a different size toilet; and the wall sink was replaced with a more modern vanity sink using requiring repair and refinishing the wall.
On this job Scott Goodrich demonstrated his ability and familiarity with a wide range of home construction and repair methods, home products, installation of flooring, lighting, and windows. Both the house reconstruction and renovation were done expeditiously and efficiently, and demolition and reconstruction were well planned such that the bathroom was ready to use in what I consider a minimum amount of time.

Worst experience of my life.  Was a nightmare from beginning to end and I don't think my family will ever recover from the financial devastation wrought by this company.  Every step of the process was traumatic and stressful.  Would love to provide details but some people are litigious, just check out his history at  Plus I would need an encyclopedia to provide the details the devastation.

We needed some more storage in our home, so Carey, the owner, and his guys came out and built a custom shelving unit in our garage. We are thrilled with the outcome and have been much more organized since. He also repaired a side fence for us and more a wobbly banister sturdy again! I have seen some other work that these guys have  done (they built some houses nearby) and they are incredible! Hard workers and fair prices, cant beat that! Thanks Carey!

    Unique Home Design & Remodeling
I liked the fact that soon after they put the tiles we had heavy rains and there was no leaking.  They were times when they said they would be here and they didn't show up at the time they said they would nor did they call to say that they wouldn't be there or they are running late.   I don't have anybody to compare them with. The roof served its purpose but they were some things that they didn't do and I would say no.

    Voge Inc
phenomenal, fantastic, could not have been better in any way. ordeal began returning home easter weekend, found rear of our home flooded after toilet failed. no where to turn, didn't know anyone to call, opened the yellow pages and just pointed. well that was the luckiest pointing ever. finger landed on ad for regal carpet restoration specializing in flood damage. my call was answered (easter sunday evening) by danny at regal who promptly dispatched his team to begin the cleanup. first impressions being lasting impressions as the saying goes, we were so taken by ernesto and his crew we decided to continue with regal through the process. regals crew removed all affected carpet, saturated drywall and closets. I'll give regal a separate review under their name. in short a wonderful experience ron at voge contacted me and we began a 2 month relationship as drywallers, painters, cabinet makers, carpet, marble, finished woodworking. you name it, whatever crafts were required to put our house back in order ron, and jean at the office, oversaw every stage or work. could go on and on but i'll get to the point, it was just the most professional, delightful, comfortable relationship one would hope for when you find yourself at odds with an insurance adjuster and need guidance. my wife can't stop raving about each and every worker that came to our home. by the time all subs had finished we met 25-30 of the nicest most trustworthy skilled craftsmen you can only hope to deal with. all ron's guys, all ron overseeing everything. more than happy to speak with anyone considering using voge or regal and will discuss on phone or in person as you wish.

The experience was very good. It was an A across the board. They showed up at the appointed time and took a look at exactly what was required. They ran off to get the necessary materials and were back in an hour. In less than a full day they had all of the work done, and all cleaned up and everything was in very fine shape. That was on the termite work. The bathroom repair was done on a second day. Because of drying time and whatnot they had to come a few different times. They did pursue it diligently and I was pleased with their craftsmanship. The price was unbeatable!
