Real People ~ Real Reviews ~ Real Results

  • My husband and I have been long-time patients of the South Bay Family Medical Group in Torrance. We specifically followed Dr. Wallis to SBFMG because we liked his style and professionalism that was comfortable with being a and quot;realand quot; doctor that you could pose questions to without feeling like he was going to talk down to you. Since then my impressions of the entire team there and Dr. Wallis have changed drastically. The organization, including most of the care team (the public facing representatives SBFMG) have ZERO professionalism and lack the basic skills to interact courteously with patients and spouses of patients. I was hung up on today by a member of Dr Wallis's care team after trying to stress to her that my husband has been trying to get a prescription filed by SBFMG for almost 5 weeks and certainly 3 weeks since his physical. Although he has called and spoken directly to the same care team member, she has NO record of their conversations and no near-term recollection of the commitments made to clear up the problem with the prescription. When I told her I wanted a call back from Dr Wallis, she snidely said and quot;I'll give him your number and I'm sure he'll jump right on that.and quot; This type of behavior should just not be tolerated period. The job market is flooded with skilled professionals who are screaming for a solid job, while we have clinical administrators talking down to and hanging up on customers/patients. From reading the YELP ratings and comments I am not the only customer of SBFMG to have complained about the attitude and arrogance of this organization. The lack of personal care and the inattention to detail and follow-through draws into question the core competence of this medical organization in delivering trusted health care. This issue I am referencing is merely symptomatic of a much larger problem. I am writing this because I am so mad that I am shaking from the arrogance and privilege that the care team continues to take when talking with a patient. Something needs to be done and soon. I have already left a voicemail with the Torrance Memorial Director of Clinical Care as this is only one area where both my husband and I have been repeatedly disappointed.

  • He is a superb diagnostician. He knew what my problems are before referring me to a specialist who always confirms same. He is known in the Los Angeles medical world as a "doctor's doctor." He is thorough, sympathetic and attentive, has a sense of humor and asks all the right questions. He is an "old-fashioned" MD, if you're in the hospital he will come to your bedside. He works long hours and will call you discuss results of your tests as soon as they are back from the lab. Cannot recommend him more highly. He a Board certified Internist and Nephrologist.

  • She was very open and honest and took my crazy questions seriously. We talked about a wide variety of topics including how bad smoking is for your health (there was a poster on the wall in the exam room) to drinking wine after a long day to being tested for blood type. I hate having my blood taken, but she did it efficiently and painlessly while keeping up a stream of conversation to keep my mind off what was happening at the time.

  • This was only my first appointment, but so far I'm thrilled. Just having moved to California from Michigan, and with a host of medical baggage (Fibromyalgia, Sleep Apnea, Depression, and Thyroid issuse being the main troubles), I was looking for a doctor who was up to date on my issues, interested in helping me be as healthy as possible and did not think any of my symptoms were and quot;all in my headand quot;.
Dr. Miyakawa was wonderful. I should probably write a bad review so that I can keep her to myself! lol From the moment she walked in I liked her. She is very professional, very personable, and very interested in her patients. This appointment was a sort of and quot;get to know youand quot; appointment, and she did not rush though it or just take the measurable facts. She asked all sorts of questions that I would never have though to bring up, she was very thorough in her questions about medications and frequency, and to my surprise she asked a whole barrage of questions about how the issues affected my emotional health, my mental image of myself, and my view of the world. Without discounting my medications in the least (she was very careful to reinforce that I have real medical problems, and that she did not believe I was making them up), she challenged me on my view of myself, my interactions with the world, and how I defined myself by the diseases and as a person.
    I was blown away.
She did something else that amazed me. I am a fair amount overweight and do less than I should about it. Acknowledging that fact, Dr. Miyakawa gently warned me about how easy it was to get swept up in Southern California's obsession with being unhealthily thin. I appreciated both the way she did not harp about my weight AND her awareness of how culture affects health as much as anything else.
The Doctor ordered blood tests and a tetanus shot as I was long overdue for both. The tech who took the blood and gave the shot was fantastic. I am extremely difficult to get blood from, and she got it on the first poke (which I hardly felt). The tetanus shot was even less painful. I was sitting there waiting to get poked when she put the band-aid on - hadn't even realized she had administered it.
The office staff was also wonderful. I am a chronically late person, and though I was on time for my appointment, I missed the 15 minute period I was supposed to be early to fill out paperwork as a new patient. At previous offices I've been to, I would have received the stink-eye, condescending answers, and curt service. These ladies were nothing of the sort! They were understanding, helpful and received my sincere apologies graciously with reassurances that I was fine and it wouldn't be a problem.
Again, this was just my first visit, but if things continue in this vein, I will be a very loyal patient! Thank SMBP and Dr. Miyakawa!

  • She is very good. I like her type of medicine. I would recommend her to anybody. She's one of the better physicians that I've run into. I think she's excellent. I would trust her.

  • I think he is one of the best doctors in Los Angeles. He is very expensive, but excellent at his work.
